Was I unreasonable to dob someone in?

NC as this might be quite outing.

I commute to work on the train. I get on at stop A and off at stop D, both of which have ticket barriers. I always buy a ticket when I travel.

Stops B and C don't have ticket barriers.

A man got on at Stop B. The inspector came around asking for anyone who got on at Stop B. The inspector was very visible and called out "Stop B passengers" loudly enough for everyone to hear. The man didn't have headphones in. Yet, the man didn't show his ticket.

So, as the inspector passed I pointed out the man and said he'd got on at Stop B. Inspector then went to check his ticket and what a surprise the man didn't have one.

The man called me an interfering bitch. Meh, yeah, that's pretty accurate but it fucks me off that people feel as though buying a ticket is optional. It's not. You're using a service, you need to pay for it.

So was I unreasonable to dob this guy in?

You should not condone stealing whether it is from your grandma or from a large organisation

But it's OK for large corporations to steal by exploiting their monopoly position.

RebeccaWithTheGoodHair · 27/04/2017 14:04

This thread is indeed odd. The vitriol being thrown at the OP - who did nothing wrong and was verbally abused by a man - is incredible.

It's OK to be an abusive thief it seems but god forbid you stick your head above the parapets to ask someone to stick to the rules.

weeblueberry · 27/04/2017 14:04

I literally wouldn't have the energy to even get worked up about this...

bbcessex · 27/04/2017 14:07

OP. I too pay over 30 quid a day for train travel.

How dare he think that he is above paying? You don't buy a ticket 'in case you get caught'.. you pay for the service (however shit it sometimes/often is).

I wouldn't have had the balls but commend you for standing up... bet he will think twice in future.

Honestly I really think it's pretty nasty to snitch on someone for something like that. I don't know anyone that would do that, pretty horrible op. It clearly gave you some sort of vindictive pleasure though.

Whether you believe the railways should be privatised or not it doesn't alter the fact that they employ thousands of people who have good careers and earn decent wages doing their jobs.

How does he get out the other end without a ticket?

JustAKitten

As said User, big business steals from workers.

Two wrongs do not make a right. Fgs
It's not about what THEY do - over which you have no control, by the way - it's about what YOU do. Principles, anyone?

Increasinglymiddleaged · 27/04/2017 14:10

But it's OK for large corporations to steal by exploiting their monopoly position.

Because that's what train companies do. They charge extortionate fares that people have no choice but to pay to travel at certain times. Then they have a bit more by making you pay for parking.

It's OK to be an abusive thief it seems but god forbid you stick your head above the parapets to ask someone to stick to the rules.

I don't see where anyone has said that the other passenger was in the right.

JustAKitten · 27/04/2017 14:10

User so we just all smile nicely, toe the line and let the elites keep fucking us over.

BoffinMum · 27/04/2017 14:11

I would have dobbed him in as well. I have often been in the position of not being able to get a seat and being pretty annoyed the person who was fare dodging was occupying one they hadn't paid for when other people who had paid were having to stand up as a consequence.

Lweji · 27/04/2017 14:11

So, we're all for a strike where no passenger pays their ticket because the transport companies are evil?

BoffinMum · 27/04/2017 14:11

And if you hate train fares and think it's a form of oppression there's nothing to stop you setting up a campaign to reduce them,. But dodging them just because you are too mean to cough up is not on.

PoorYorick · 27/04/2017 14:12

Whenever faced with this type of incident I always remind myself that it was the people obeying all the laws that marched others into gas chambers and it was the law breakers (criminals) that were smuggling them out of the country.

I wonder which one you would have been?????

AnyFucker will send me into the pits of hell for this, but dang, that's a humdinger of a Godwin. And then swiftly followed by, "If I plan to murder someone but 'my plans are thwarted/change my mind' doesn't make me a murderer".... It's made my day, my week, my entire month.

Thank you, thank you. I love you all.

JustAKitten · 27/04/2017 14:12

Lweji I'm for a revolution but I suspect few are as radical so a strike would be a start Wink

WooWooSister · 27/04/2017 14:12

If you got on at B and left at C, would you still buy a ticket? Your OP makes it sound like you resent the fact you can't skip on and off because of the barriers at your stations.
I think you're a clype because you're jealous not because of your superior public spirit.

Natsku · 27/04/2017 14:12

The odd person not paying for their ticket has almost no impact (probably none at all) on ticket prices. And grassing on someone is a bit, well, primary schoolish "Uuummmm I'm telling!"

Anyway one of the few exciting joys in life is risking a free trip on the train - the nervous anxiety as you sit down, the feeling of dread setting in as you hear the Inspector coming, and then the rushing relief when he/she passes you by Grin Or then the crushing feeling when you get asked and then have to pay the penalty fare, all part of the exhilaration.

RebeccaWithTheGoodHair · 27/04/2017 14:13

I tell you what the train companies do have to do - they have to invest thousands upon thousands in ticketing barriers to stop arsewipe fare dodgers costing a fortune in lost revenue.

Don't be silly. Have you actually thought this through? The word "snitch"is juvenile, btw.

I think Southern Rail passengers would be well within their rights to pay for their tickets collectively but in an escrow account as a form of civil disobedience until the company starts sorting out actual trains to transport them on properly. Not the same thing as individual fare dodging in that you are eventually paying for the ticket and they get the money when they've actually been arsed to provide the proper service.

babyhamish · 27/04/2017 14:15

I have done it before and got applauded by the whole train! Man gets on train everyday for months and months (no ticket barrier at my stop and only one stop before train terminates at main station) and sits there bold as brass never once showing a ticket ignoring the conductor who comes down train pretending he got on sooner I assume. He even had the cheek to tut at the conductor who went back to him after conductor had walked past him twice asking for tickets! Next day sat and ignored the conductor! Now people on my train seem to take it in turns to dob him in cos it's down right cheeky to use a service everyday and never pay! Cheeky bastards!!
