Was I unreasonable to dob someone in?

NC as this might be quite outing.

I commute to work on the train. I get on at stop A and off at stop D, both of which have ticket barriers. I always buy a ticket when I travel.

Stops B and C don't have ticket barriers.

A man got on at Stop B. The inspector came around asking for anyone who got on at Stop B. The inspector was very visible and called out "Stop B passengers" loudly enough for everyone to hear. The man didn't have headphones in. Yet, the man didn't show his ticket.

So, as the inspector passed I pointed out the man and said he'd got on at Stop B. Inspector then went to check his ticket and what a surprise the man didn't have one.

The man called me an interfering bitch. Meh, yeah, that's pretty accurate but it fucks me off that people feel as though buying a ticket is optional. It's not. You're using a service, you need to pay for it.

So was I unreasonable to dob this guy in?

What's stopping people not paying except barriers and inspectors doing their job?

No barriers where I live so nothing's stopping me. Its like a game of cat and mouse with the Inspector - I have to try and get a free ride and they have to try and catch me. To be fair its not considered fare dodging on the train where I am, they just charge you an extra 'inspection fee' if you have to buy from the conductor so I never buy a ticket before I get on the train. Usually the conductor comes and I pay plus the extra euro fee but sometimes, those glorious occasions, I don't get checked and I feel like I've won the lottery.

Ha ha - Merseyrail's shit is about to hit the fan so the whole country will be covered soon (in bad service I mean, not in actual shit).

JustAKitten · 27/04/2017 14:33

Rebecca you're technically correct but as anyone with legal knowledge will say, laws are messy and contradictory. They're not nearly as clear cut as people think (especially when cases get distinguished).

My issue is people are getting cross about a minor thing here.

user1492526833 · 27/04/2017 14:34

OP you're a hero. Next quest.....getting large corporations to pay fair taxes.

HateSummer · 27/04/2017 14:34

Wow. You really are a nosey Parker aren't you? Odd job.

Lweji · 27/04/2017 14:34

And it's not theft it's fraudulent use of a service. Different offenses in different Acts.

Loving the technicalities. :)

user1471545174 · 27/04/2017 14:36

You did the right thing, OP. I wouldn't have had the balls.

user1471545174 · 27/04/2017 14:38

The crims on this thread are coming over badly. Talk about entitled.

Headofthehive55 · 27/04/2017 14:39

I'm rather particular about not speeding. So no not to my knowledge have I ever committed any offences.
Good on you op. As far as I'm concerned it's theft.

WankingMonkey · 27/04/2017 14:40

if you pay for a parking space and there is time left on it do you pass it on?

I have done this with all day bus tickets actually. I have to walk past another bus stop to get home and sometimes I will give my ticket to someone else who is waiting to save them the fare Blush Never thought of it as stealing until now but I guess technically it is

nopunin10did · 27/04/2017 14:41

AnyFucker will send me into the pits of hell for this, but dang, that's a humdinger of a Godwin. And then swiftly followed by, "If I plan to murder someone but 'my plans are thwarted/change my mind' doesn't make me a murderer".... It's made my day, my week, my entire month.

PoorYorick Must be a slow month in the PoorYorick world emphasis on the slow as you've clearly missed the point. I was pointing out that the passenger wasn't a fair dodger as he paid for a ticket (albeit reluctantly). Are you still following? You might want to use the tissue you're drooling.

RebeccaWithTheGoodHair · 27/04/2017 14:42

I get what you're saying but it's a bit like copyright infringement. So many people just think it's OK but it has a huge impact, but people will just think it's fine for them to share an image or a track and that it doesn't matter because it's only them.

I really love the railways and fare dodging does have an impact, I would much rather investment went into staff training, improvements to stations, electrification and all the good things - not having to put up ticket barriers at even the most rural of stations. The railways really are of huge social and environmental benefit to the country as a whole.

pucelleauxblanchesmains · 27/04/2017 14:43

"So you are comparing murder to fare dodging really?" well, there are also people comparing the OP to Nazi collaborators, which I think is worse

RainbowJack · 27/04/2017 14:44

All this snitching, grassing, dobbing is fucking idiotic. What are you 10 year olds?

This kind of culture can hinder law enforcement catching criminals, action being taken against bullying, allows people to get hurt (snitches get stitches, anyone?) and a lot more to boot.

Act like an adult and take responsibility for your actions.

Strictly, he should have been fined because he didn't volunteer the information and he didn't have a ticked.

Make it my entire year. This is just the thread that keeps on giving. I love it.

(Most posters seem to think he was an unfair dodger.)

kali110 · 27/04/2017 14:47

Di you just want people to pat you on the back?
I certainly wouldn't be thinking good on you if i'd been on the train.

The crims on this thread are coming over badly. Talk about entitled.
for disagreeing with the op, and thinking she was a busybody? yes must be.Grin

Starlighter · 27/04/2017 14:52

If you saw him everyday and everyday he did it, then maybe he deserved it. But as a one off? You have no idea of his circumstances or why he did this. I think you were being U and a bit mean imo.

SallyVating · 27/04/2017 14:53

Jeez he's probably end of the month skint.. ain't we all?

JustAKitten · 27/04/2017 14:54

Rebecca I wouldn't have a problem if the companies didn't rip us off.

nopunin10did · 27/04/2017 14:58

Biscuit jammy dodger for the unfair dodger.

Back to sleep Yorick I think it's your nap time.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 27/04/2017 14:59

no one likes grass, that's all I am saying

I think it was really shitty thing to do actually

Headofthehive55 · 27/04/2017 15:05

Effectively it's taking off probably us all. Loss of revenue affects profits which in turn affects share prices. That affects pension funds.
A large proportion of the country have a vested interest in the profitability of business.
Big business are "us" more than you'd know.
