Was I unreasonable to dob someone in?

NC as this might be quite outing.

I commute to work on the train. I get on at stop A and off at stop D, both of which have ticket barriers. I always buy a ticket when I travel.

Stops B and C don't have ticket barriers.

A man got on at Stop B. The inspector came around asking for anyone who got on at Stop B. The inspector was very visible and called out "Stop B passengers" loudly enough for everyone to hear. The man didn't have headphones in. Yet, the man didn't show his ticket.

So, as the inspector passed I pointed out the man and said he'd got on at Stop B. Inspector then went to check his ticket and what a surprise the man didn't have one.

The man called me an interfering bitch. Meh, yeah, that's pretty accurate but it fucks me off that people feel as though buying a ticket is optional. It's not. You're using a service, you need to pay for it.

So was I unreasonable to dob this guy in?

It does affect me because I pay for my travel and those prices increase when other people don't pay for services they use.

I do care about other people's circumstances but it doesn't entitle people to use services free of charge.

Vulvic no, prices rise when corporations want to increase profits. If that's your problem, take it up with them.

Poor people using the train for free isn't the problem here

YABU. The only way I would ever snitch on someone is if they did something directly to me to hurt me. I wouldn't grass at someone who was jumping a fare and doing a rich rail company out of two quid

You did GCSE's though and presumably have a good, well paid job if you are prepared to pay £38 for a ticket to get there.
Perhaps this person didn't have the money to travel and had to get somewhere urgently.
I hope your job doesn't require compassion or your doomed love.

I'd be looking behind me for months if I'd done that. I get the principle but I think you were foolish. It would have been better to writ to the train company asking for inspectors to go through and check all tickets. The ratio of jibbers from the stations without barriers would then inform the case for installing barriers/having more regular checks. Also you wouldn't have put yourself in potential danger or looked a bit of a prat.

Rebecca because if someone's skipping a fare there's likely a reason for it. Even so I'm not going to get upset over someone not paying overpriced profits to rich CEOs

If The company are silly enough to trust people to show tickets that's on them.

I think you'd find prices would rise regardless of how much money the company make tbh

There is a big misconception on this thread about the train operators and their profits. You may not agree with a privatised railway (I don't either) but the operators need the income to make the improvements they are told to do by the DfT.

I would not have reported him and I'd also have thought you were a total twat if I watched you do it. Especially as if as you say you not only reported him but you then sat there and laughed at him.
