to not stop my DC doing things because other people don't want their DC to do them?

My children are adventurous and unless something is dangerous or unsafe for themselves or others, I don't see the problem. Increasingly I find myself being scowled at by other parents whose DC want to copy mine as if I should stop mine to help them out. I've had passive agressive comments, too. As far as I'm concerned, it's up to them to enforce their rules on their children - not me.

Some examples to give you an idea of the contexts of these situations:

Splashing in puddles
Climbing trees
Standing up on the swing
Climbing the slide (as long as no one else is waiting to go down)
Painting their hands and feet at toddler group
Rolling down hills

AIBU to continue to let my children do what I'm fine with them doing and ignore disapproving outsiders who expect me to stop them so their children won't do the same?

My problem with puddles is that dd always finds the ones deeper than her wellies

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 25/04/2017 23:05

Yes being considerate to others is very important and what I am always trying to make them aware of.

But on the other hand, you've got to teach them a bit of toughness - they shouldn't be scared to approach the slide because a child is climbing up it.

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 25/04/2017 23:05

I've experienced a clash with pigeon chasing.

That1950sMum · 25/04/2017 23:05

Don't let your children climb up slides. There's no need.

DonkeyOaty · 25/04/2017 23:06

Slide climbers esp those with their parents looking on fondly make me feel quite aerated on behalf of the kids waiting patiently for Florence and Horatio to clear orf Angry

The rest of it - meh. As long as your painty child didn't get my child painty with their painty feet.

TheAntiBoop · 25/04/2017 23:06

I don't think it's about being scared - it's about feeling you can't use it because it's being used for something else.

Although ds used to scare slide climbers off by shouting 'remember uncle X!!!' At them

TheAntiBoop · 25/04/2017 23:07

Pigeon chasing is frowned upon in this house!!!

MaroonPencil · 25/04/2017 23:07

Climbing up the slide stops the slide from being slidey Sad. Scuffs it up, doesn't it?

Waddlelikeapenguin · 25/04/2017 23:08

Climbing slides is amazing for kids core strength Wink

My kids do a lot of indoor climbing which they tend to extend to outdoor crops of rock (& trees but I consider kids that dont climb trees to be odd) we have some risk adverse friends who won't let their kids join in which is fair enough but I don't stop my kids.

As long as you are not being inconsiderate of others YANBU

WorraLiberty · 25/04/2017 23:09

I agree with whispering

It really is about context.

If none of those things negatively affect other children then there's no problem.

I used to love hill rolling as a child. As an adult, I check for dog/fox/rabbit/squirrel shit before my kids do it Grin

Looking back, my parents were rather more lax Blush

PickAChew · 25/04/2017 23:10

Slide climbing is annoying. Standing up on a swing is something I worked and worked on as a kid and never managed, though!

Jumping in muddy puddles is compulsory! (Except the really deep ones with potholes in the bottom!)

Italiangreyhound · 25/04/2017 23:10

All fine to me OP, except the slide, that is quite annoying to me.

CakeNinja · 25/04/2017 23:11

I wouldn't bat an eyelid at any of that. Who are these people?
Last time DD rolled down a hill though, she rolled in shit. I was rather unhappy. As was she to be fair Grin 💩

Lionking1981 · 25/04/2017 23:12

Yanbu and yabu. I once got into trouble with dd friend's mother as on a walk on the beach, she got her wellies and trousers wet and sandy. That's the fun of going to the beach for me.

Slide climbers are very, very annoying though. Every time I go to soft play, kids hog the slide climbing up them and shyer kids feel they can't go on them. There are climbing frames to climb. Leave the slides alone for kids that actually want to slide down them.

Rock climbing at the beach is another one frowned upon. No bird chasing here - I'd be commenting on that myself as I hate it. DD also climbs across the top of the monkey bars - that always gets me the look. I get the age thing too about my DD and nets and big swings!

YANBU. They're just jealous

MrsJayy · 25/04/2017 23:14

Tbf i dont like standing on swings because i fell off 1 i was 9 and standing on it friend pushed it and i fell that was in the days of no squishy stuff underneath i split my lip on the concrete, so I always felt queasy if i saw kids standing on swings

Lillieslamb · 25/04/2017 23:14

I think it's fine unless they are disturbing other people or causing a danger. Except climbing up slides, that really bothers me for some reason!

I have had similar with dd at baby/toddler group. The woman who runs it gets out lots of sensory/messy play, which 10 month old dd loves as we do a lot at home. I often a strip her right down to her nappy so she can explore the jelly/water etc, but I have noticed other parents looking at me slyly and trying to keep their child clean, and making passive aggressive comments. I see it as dd is just exploring which is the whole point.

I think it's just important to do what you feel is right, as we all have different levels of what we allow and you shouldn't change that to suit others. At the same time, it's important to stay safe so other children don't copy them.

I think you need to hang around with different people. It's seems weird that you are experiencing so much dissaproval for such normal things. Is it possible that this dissaproval is for something else? Are your kids really loud? Are you really loud?

All seems a bit odd 🤷🏻‍♀️

Coloursthatweremyjoy · 25/04/2017 23:16

I'm with waddle.

Are you sure you have the right friends...

TheAntiBoop · 25/04/2017 23:16

You judge bird chasing others judge slide climbing and others judge 'helicopter' parents

It's the lot of being a parent I guess. But you can't really complain if you are also judging!

5foot5 · 25/04/2017 23:19

I've experienced a clash with pigeon chasing

Pigeon chasers should be burnt at the stake. Don't care much about the pigeons, bloody horrible birds. But I don't want some panicked pigeon flying in to me.

OP your list of "adventurous" stuff sounds OK bordering tame to me. Surprised you meet with any disapproval

hollyvsivy · 25/04/2017 23:19

I'm not judging bird chasers. It's a fact that it's cruel, surely?

These people tend to be strangers rather than friends. My DC may be a bit loud, but if you can't be loud at the park when you're a kid surely there's something gone wrong??
