To think that some left-wing supporters are just so NASTY

cathf · 22/04/2017 14:22

This is based on posts I have read on here and a couple of very vocal left-wing friends I have on facebook.
I have truly never read a Conservative supporter personally attacking Labour in the same way.
I find it astonishing and if I am honest, a bit childish.
Recent examples include a website pulling Teresa May's living room apart and costing out every single thing in it, to a chorus of comments along the lines of how can she sleep at night when children are hungry and she has a £25 candle.
Every time the subject is raised on here, there is a long thread of hysterical comments about how nasty the Tories are. Yes, Tory supporters state their case and answer back, but they seem to be able to do it in a more restrained, mature manner than outraged Labour screamers.
There seems to be a lot of personal bile aimed at Teresa May, which I am at a loss to understand - just what has she done that is so terrible?
She is pushing through Brexit, but that was what the country voted for. Is she supposed to go against the country's wishes?
All of Labour's policies look very lovely, but none have any substance at all. My friend recently stated on Facebook she was supporting Jeremy Corbyn because he wanted peace not war. And? How is he going to implement that then? It reminds me of the 1980s T-shirts stating War is Stupid. Lots of nice words, but to implementation strategies.
It amazes me that supposedly intelligent people seem to be so brainwashed by this nonsense and think that flinging mud is an appopriate way to behave.
Is it just me?

Did anyone see Ruth Davidson getting her photo op with a mobility group? Only weeks after her party have taken away 51,000 mobility cars from the disabled. No shame at all, that is nasty.

user1471596238 · 25/04/2017 19:54

I can see things from both sides. I do feel that there is a sense that the left have the monopoly on intellectual thought and right wing views have I guess been seen as being traditionally more reactionary, which is not necessarily fair (that's more down to elements of the right wing media IMO) but then again, the slogans like 'remoaner' and one of my pet hates: 'snowflake' seems to be very much from the right wing. Just not enough tolerance for opposing views (on both sides) floating around I guess. I am going to vote Labour because it reflects my personal philosophy on the kind of society that I want to live in but I am fully prepared to acknowledge that it's my opinion and it doesn't necessarily make me right or wrong.

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 25/04/2017 19:55

God, I hate snowflake too (and unicorns!).

I really wonder whether any of those people have even seen Fight Club...

BrexshitMeansBrexshit · 25/04/2017 20:00

cathf Would you ever vote Tory? If not, your mind is set, in the same way as I would never vote Labour.

Actually, yes. I would vote Tory in a heartbeat. All it would require would be for their manifesto to say they would properly fund social care, the NHS and education, that they would close tax loopholes and go after corporate tax avoiders and people like Phillip Green. If they would also protect the environment in a sustainable way and take immediate steps to encourage young people into health professions by NOT abolishing bursaries at a time when EU health staff are leaving the NHS in larger numbers than ever, I'd even go out canvassing for them.

The fact that you would 'never vote Labour' - presumably regardless of what they did - says a great deal about you and your bias.

user1471596238 · 25/04/2017 20:05

'Remoaner' is just an easy way of shutting down debate. 'Snowflake' seems to be mainly aimed at today's young generation and IMO not only is it a massive generalisation but it's also unfair because quite frankly, I think that kids today have it way harder than baby boomers and Generation Xers (to which I belong) in terms of job prospects, mortgage prospects, future pensions, the pressure from social media to name a few examples.

Natsku · 25/04/2017 20:08

Yeah I agree, I think to ridicule the idea that it would automatically make people lazy it would have been better to increase the amount and not just remove the signing on etc.

Should have also made it a bigger trial and included employed but low-income people as well.
Thankfully there's not the hassle of signing on etc. here - just once a month quick online form to state whether you've been unemployed all month, or been in training or had temporary work. They don't treat the unemployed like 3rd class citizens here.

Natsku · 25/04/2017 20:09

mixing with the wrong types

Bet it was a gang of posho Tories, wielding moneybags instead of shivs Grin

Ruth the Mooth is barely mentioning the westminster tories, she is using it as a way to fight indyref2

HelenaDove · 25/04/2017 20:33

Report on Channel 4 news. Food bank referrals up 17% in Universal Credit areas.

Ppl are not getting any money for THIRTEEN WEEKS.

HelenaDove · 25/04/2017 20:44

YY BigGranny DH is 67 and is being transferred from DLA to PIP.

Justanotherlurker · 25/04/2017 20:53

you mean abit like leave voters blaming remainers for 'talking down the economy?'

Come on with the whataboutry and political point scoring, Remainers/Leavers are not even tied to politcal lines, one contributing factor labour are in dire straights at the minute.

Momentum are a shit show, they held a protest (doesn't matter how many where there it was under their banner) against the New Statesman because they had a very left leaning critisim of corbyn, The guardian is now see as right leaning because it isn't just full on priase, so much so that they have decided to create their own media circle and regularly push the most click bait canary/buzzfeed articles.

That's ignoring the own goal of asking everyone to put a £10 bet on Corbyn to win the election so it "will force the media to change the narrative"... momentum are a joke and would rather bring down a legitimate opposition for purely ideological reasons, they are not for converting support they are more interested in purging decenters

BigGrannyPants · 25/04/2017 21:17

@HelenaDove does that work out less? I imagine it does! It's never in anyone's favour..

GhostofFrankGrimes · 25/04/2017 21:34

so much so that they have decided to create their own media circle and regularly push the most click bait canary/buzzfeed articles.

is having a pro Corbyn stance wrong? I feel you are missing the fundamental point. Every Labour leader save Blair has been vilified by the press simply because they are Labour. When Corbyn is gone the next leader will suffer the same. Corbyn's success is due to the backlash of neo liberal Labour. The PLP should hang their heads in shame.

Pinkandwhiteblossoms · 25/04/2017 21:35

I suppose it depends which press. There are left wing and right wing papers.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 25/04/2017 21:39

There are left wing and right wing papers.

The majority are right wing. Its hardly a level playing field despite people saying they are not influenced by the media.

Pinkandwhiteblossoms · 25/04/2017 21:46

Left

Guardian
Mirror
Independent

Right

Express
Mail (although the mail moans about EVERYTHING!)
Not sure where you'd put the Sun, really. Right I suppose.

HelenaDove · 25/04/2017 21:47

Big Granny We sent the form back in early March and still havent heard. There is quite a backlog apparently.

I dont know whether to laugh or cry when i hear some say "its to help ppl back to work"

a. DH is over 65 (the ones who were under 65 in 2013 are now being transferred even though they are on state pension by now.

b. DLA is not an out of work benefit.

HelenaDove · 25/04/2017 21:48

"Not sure where you'd put the Sun, really"

In a litter tray?!

GhostofFrankGrimes · 25/04/2017 21:48

Right

The Sun, Daily Mail, Times, Telegraph, Express, Star.

Left

Mirror, Guardian.

There is no print edition of the independent

Pinkandwhiteblossoms · 25/04/2017 21:50

True, it was always the paper my dad read growing up. I forget it doesn't exist any more Sad

I'd personally put telegraph and times in the middle. Certainly more nuanced and balanced than the Mail, which isn't hard obviously!

Helena Grin

HelenaDove · 25/04/2017 21:51

And they will be constantly reassessed so we will soon be seeing ppl in their 70s being repeatedly called into "medicals"

Natsku · 25/04/2017 21:52

Ppl are not getting any money for THIRTEEN WEEKS

13 weeks?! That's a disgrace!! Why aren't people more outraged about it?! There was a huge fuss over here about benefits being delayed for up to 3 weeks due to a change in the system and that resulted in all claimants who suffered delays getting paid compensation, because its not fucking on to delay people's lifeline like that!

Natsku · 25/04/2017 21:53

The Independent isn't in print anymore? That makes me sad, I always used to read that when I was at Uni :(

Pinkandwhiteblossoms · 25/04/2017 21:54

It's still online, there are other very left wing online only newspapers tbf, like the huffington post.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 25/04/2017 21:54

I'd personally put telegraph and times in the middle.

The Times is owned by Murdoch. It is pro remain so there some level of critical thinking at least.

The Telegraph is a posher version of the Mail.
