To think DD shouldn't vote the party that a quiz told her to?

DD1 is 18 and this will be her first time to vote. She did an online quiz that tells you which party you suit to vote for. AIBU to think this isn't the best way?

Do you discuss issues on a regular basis with her and comment on news stories together? If so she should be reasonably well informed anyway.

NickMyLipple · 22/04/2017 10:20

YABU - I did this quiz yesterday: uk.isidewith.com/political-quiz and thought it was excellent. It asks you many questions to gain your political stance and then tells you the party who have the views which match yours. At 18, unless she is very in to politics I would not expect her to know the manifestos of parties, and to know which policies are important to which parties.

I think it's a great way to learn how your individual thoughts and views map to those of political parties.

Devorak · 22/04/2017 10:24

I think the way she votes has absolutely nothing to do with you.

I have seen quizzes that are fairly comprehensive and at least give you something to think about i.e. matching your ideas to parties' policies as opposed to doing what your mother thinks you should.

alltouchedout · 22/04/2017 10:24

Well, what do you think would be a better way?

StillDrivingMeBonkers · 22/04/2017 10:25

She could come on here and all the lefties will demand that she votes for the beardy weirdy one Grin

GraceGrape · 22/04/2017 10:32

If the quiz is based on current manifestos I don't see the problem. Manifestos are published to inform voters of policies and are designed to give us guidance on how we want to vote.

Arriettyborrower · 22/04/2017 10:33

nick that quiz is really good and thought provoking - am going to share with my adult ds's who will be voting for the second time

justmeee · 22/04/2017 10:33

I did the quick above and it was bang on.

Arriettyborrower · 22/04/2017 10:33

Ooops meant to say will be eligible to vote - they were unclear on their views last time.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 22/04/2017 10:38

I did that quiz too and it surprised me - the party I always vote for was almost neck and neck with another that I hadn't considered voting for at 73% and 72%.

MirandaWest · 22/04/2017 10:41

I did try quiz which suggested I should vote for the SNP. As I'm not in Scotland that probably isn't practical but is interesting to see.

Trills · 22/04/2017 10:41

Depends which quiz.

Does it match you based on your favourite colour and whether you like bacon sandwiches?

Or does it match you based on party policies and which issues you say are important to you?

PutThatPomBearBack · 22/04/2017 10:43

The quiz told me to vote green, that's exactly how I have and will vote.

AalyaSecura · 22/04/2017 10:49

Lol - that quiz suggested I move house!

Muminho · 22/04/2017 10:52

What do you think would be the best way OP?

LemonRedwood · 22/04/2017 10:54

I did the quiz above and the top three parties I "side" most with are apparently Plaid Cymru, SNP and Sinn Féin.

Most helpful in making a decision - I live in England.

TiggyMP · 22/04/2017 10:55

That quiz doesn't take into account the issue of leaders, and whether or not you think the leader is capable of running an organic hummus stall. (No clues as to who I'm talking about!)

It also doesn't take into account any party being quite anti-Semitic at the moment. (Also no clues!!)

And then there's the whole tactical voting business...

CaoNiMartacus · 22/04/2017 10:56

I just did that test, Nick. Seems my beliefs tally with Sinn Fein!! Who'd have thought?

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 22/04/2017 10:57

I was torn last time between voting for the labour party and voting for the LibDems as a tactical vote. I did an online quiz a bit like the one in your link and surprisingly came out as more aligned to LD than Labour.

I think these quizzes are a really interesting way of looking at how your thinking maps to current policies and manifestos.

At least your daughter is trying to think about it rather than blindly voting for a party because her parents do, or her favourite actor does or whatever. Or even not voting.

Dozer · 22/04/2017 10:58

did it suggest a political party you dislike?

Coffeetasteslikeshit · 22/04/2017 10:58

I did the quiz, it was spot on with who it recommended that I vote for. I thought it was a really good way of checking which party your views most align with. I've recommended it to friends and family.

LordAnthony · 22/04/2017 11:03

I can think of worse ways of deciding...

Dozer · 22/04/2017 11:04

Grin Ha ha m, mine came out plaid cymru, then SNP and Sinn Fien!

Seems to be saying that the home counties are not for me!

LemonRedwood · 22/04/2017 11:06

Dozer Let's start a Home Counties revolution together Grin
