To think DD shouldn't vote the party that a quiz told her to?

DD1 is 18 and this will be her first time to vote. She did an online quiz that tells you which party you suit to vote for. AIBU to think this isn't the best way?

I did the quiz above and the top three parties I "side" most with are apparently Plaid Cymru, SNP and Sinn Féin

I had labour first, then those three and Green. I need to move...

alltouchedout · 22/04/2017 12:58

I wouldn't want my dc to vote Tory either, but I'd rather they thought about the issues and went with what they genuinely thought was right than just blindly listened to me, I guess. What was her second party?

TeamLannister · 22/04/2017 12:59

I also got SNP, then Labour then SF. No surprises there, pretty good quiz. In NI so SF it is. Wink Would definitely vote SNP if I was in Scotland & Labour if England.
If my DD got Conservatives I be devastated though and say it was a rubbish quiz...

"I side with" told me my pro-choice abortion stance was the same as UKIP (and no other parties). I'm a little dubious.

I also doubt whether this batshit crazy illiterate homophobic rant on gay marriage is official Lib Dem policy as well. I know Tim Farron was unwilling to be drawn on whether being gay was a sin but I don't think he'd go this far!

To think DD shouldn't vote the party that a quiz told her to?
AmserGwin · 22/04/2017 13:03

I got SNP! Followed by Labour then Plaid Cymru. UKIP was at the bottom which sounds about right to me!

MrsJoyOdell · 22/04/2017 13:08

According to the quiz on the first page I should vote BNP. Hmm That is not happening!!

PolymathParadox · 22/04/2017 13:10

I did the quiz - it was actually good in that it matched party policies rather than favourite food and colour! It matched who I would vote for if I could (SNP) but I don't live in Scotland. In second place were Lib Dem and Labour - the two parties I am torn between - so no help! Grin Tactical or heart...sadly I think tactical will have to win out.

Code42 · 22/04/2017 13:13

I did one last election - I came out with UKIP and TUSC level pegging Grin

OP there's worse ways of deciding how to vote in all honesty - tribal voting with a suspension of critical facilities springs to mind - plus, of course, she doesn't actually have to tell you how she votes. Or the truth Grin

Amummyatlast · 22/04/2017 13:20

I found it really interesting. I got SNP and Wales as my top two (I'm in England) then Conservatives and Labour were pretty much neck and neck. Lib dem, who a colleague suggested I vote for, got 57%. I like looking at what policies I don't agree with, as some of them were deal breakers for me.

BurnTheBlackSuit · 22/04/2017 13:29

As a PP said, it's no good at the moment as the parties haven't got manefestos yet so it's guess work. Have another go nearer the election.

Still, interesting food for thought to be getting on with.

SallyScarlett · 22/04/2017 13:32

Her next was SNP then Labour/UKIP. I am a bit disappointed yes!

averythinline · 22/04/2017 13:34

We're moving :) both came out as plaid cymru then SNP ....Live in London figure it's easier to move although labour part of London but my mp is awful...

KingsCross88 · 22/04/2017 13:35

Loads of people vote for the party their friends/parents/preferred news site votes for.

I think these sites can be good in cutting through all the waffle and matching you up with the party that best represents your interests. The only thing I'd do is try to check on the origins of the site. Some of them do have left/right affiliations.

GreyVelvet · 22/04/2017 13:37

I'm London and got plaid Cmryu, snp then Sinn Fein!

alltouchedout · 22/04/2017 13:41

I got SNP, Plaid, Labour, Lib Dem. Voting in England so obvs can't be the first two and currently torn between Labour and Lib Dem. Fairly accurate for me as if I were in Scotland I'd vote SNP anyway.

carabos · 22/04/2017 13:42

I thought I'd be more LD than I am, but got 59% Lab. Centre left as expected however.

Summerisdone · 22/04/2017 13:44

If she is going to take the quiz then leave it there in terms of research etc then she is too immature to understand politics and who and why she wants to vote.
If she however took the quiz and then took it upon herself to do more research on the different policies, maybe even have an adult discussion with others about her views and opinions vs theirs etc. then there is nothing wrong with this.

I took the quiz myself last election and was actually quite surprised with what the results were, because I always thought I swayed more towards a different party but I realised that was mainly due to my DM's views swaying me massively, now as an adult I realised I actually have different views to her on quite a few things.

HookandSwan · 22/04/2017 13:45

Voting is private and personal. I took the quiz out of interest and to be honest the results matched my party of choice.

Maybe your daughter isnt sure, and his has helped her decide.

zukiecat · 22/04/2017 13:52

I did that quiz and I got SNP and Plaid Cymru

Which, as I'm Scottish is quite handy

Next one was Sinn Fein

ohfourfoxache · 22/04/2017 14:01

Just to say that the quiz on page 1 is excellent- and actually identified the party that, for the first time in my life, I'm going to vote for

ohfourfoxache · 22/04/2017 14:02

Sorry, should clarify that I was going to vote for them anyway, the quiz just identified the one I was going to go for

NurseButtercup · 22/04/2017 14:03

Op I think I'd share your disappointment, that she's not making a more informed decision. But I think I'd be more relieved that your daughter is planning to vote. So many people her age are deciding not to vote because they feel alienated from the political process.

CornflakeHomunculus · 22/04/2017 14:13

Vote for Policies is localised so only brings up parties you can actually vote for.

It is a bit more of a faff to do as it's less a quiz and more picking out the (abbreviated) policies you agree with without knowing which party they're from but it's worth doing if you're unsure who you align with.

Pariswhenitdrizzles · 22/04/2017 14:30

I did this, and got SNP, Plaid Cymru and the Green Party (I don't live in Scotland or Wales, so it's not particularly handy!) Then I got the Lib Dems. Good quiz though.
