To think DD shouldn't vote the party that a quiz told her to?

DD1 is 18 and this will be her first time to vote. She did an online quiz that tells you which party you suit to vote for. AIBU to think this isn't the best way?

OP posts:
IAmAmy · 22/04/2017 11:47

I just took it, rather interesting. My top two were 75% Plaid Cymru and 68% SNP. Given I live in London it's probably just as well I'm not old enough to vote yet.

I don't think it's that ridiculous a way to try to decide how to vote if you're not sure. I wouldn't base voting intentions purely on that (even if it wasn't impossible for me to), but it's a means of exploring issues you feel strongly about and reading up more on the parties suggested so you can decide if they are for you.

IAmAmy · 22/04/2017 11:50

What's wrong with voting Conservative if it's the party she most identifies with?

roarityroar · 22/04/2017 11:51

73% conservative on that quiz.
As expected.

notomatoes · 22/04/2017 11:52

Well I should vote for the SNP, Plaid Cymru or Sinn Fein apparently. Guess where I live...

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 22/04/2017 11:52

We did loads of thise when ds1 was 16 in 2015

I came out as green/lib dem

Ds1 was tory with the odd BNP!!

He is voting in this election and has just joined the lib dems

I think he is probably naturally slightly right of centre

MiddlingMum · 22/04/2017 11:54

I did an online quiz the other day and it told me to vote Plaid Cymru. Odd, considering I live in the home counties Grin

OP, get your DD to read the manifestos and make up her own mind.

user1491148352 · 22/04/2017 11:54

@ Lemon

I got that result too Hmm

What I found interesting was that there is little or no difference between the Conservatives and UKIP - which ought to get TM thinking.

InfiniteSheldon · 22/04/2017 11:54

Great link esp on the things you choose to expand

IAmAmy · 22/04/2017 11:57

The analysis of the test provided earlier in the thread suggests I have few friends locally Sad

You disagree with most [constituency] voters on almost all issues

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 22/04/2017 11:58

Showing an interest is different from questioning the validity of her views because it's a different t party than you would vote for and because you don't think she should decide on that basis.

Look at the number of 'who should I vote for ' threads - asking strangers on the internet shows far less though than what your DD has done

Spudlet · 22/04/2017 12:03

Apparently I should vote SNP. I live in Norfolk so this may present a challenge. However, not to worry, I merely need to move to Scotland! So I'm glad we cleared that one up Grin

justnowords · 22/04/2017 12:03

I did the the test above and got 75% snp. Validates what I thought already. I think your daughter is entitled to vote Conservative, but I'd be asking myself why does she identify with Conservatives? Does she care less about the vulnerable or poor, and just prioritises other things above them ( she is perfectly entitled to do so, I just dont agree with that, and personally id be disappointed if any of my dc thought like that). You can air your views and she can vote for whoever she wants.

Trills · 22/04/2017 12:07

I agree with the SNP on many things, but not Scottish independence.

ArseyTussle · 22/04/2017 12:08

That quiz is great, I like being able to see how my views stack up against parties who don't stand where I live.

I'm interested in how many people got DUP in last place, given how out of step with the civilised world their policies are.

PuntCuffin · 22/04/2017 12:09

Another Home Counties person who needs to move to Wales!!

As for the OP, if an online assessment of the parties and their views is not the best way, how would you like your DD to decide? Blindly follow your political views (as I used to follow my parents Blush) or make up her own mind? An online quiz is probably as good a starting point as any for her beginning to work out her position. At 18, she should be congratulated on taking an interest, given that young voters historically have the lowest turnout.

Limitededition7inch · 22/04/2017 12:20

YABVU. I will be encouraging any of my unsure sixth formers to do what your DD has done; hopefully it will help them to make informed decisions. She is showing an interest in politics and an active one at that. What would you suggest?

I hope you haven't derided her to her face for doing the quiz?

Badcat666 · 22/04/2017 12:24

I've got to move to Wales or Scotland as well Grin

MongerTruffle · 22/04/2017 12:27

I did one yesterday - it told me to vote SNP. I agree with them on almost everything, but I don't live in Scotland.

Tell her to vote the party she hates least. And not to vote UKIP.

yomellamoHelly · 22/04/2017 12:30

Plaid Cymru followed by SNP. Not very helpful!

TenFeetTall · 22/04/2017 12:32

I think that quiz is very accurate as it assesses your beliefs across the board and aligns them with policies. I found it accurate for me. I know exactly where each belief fits with each party.

Quimby · 22/04/2017 12:35

"Well she got a party I won't be voting for."

Called it

TreeTop7 · 22/04/2017 12:38

I respect teenagers who take an interest, and vote. There is too much apathy in that age group. Good on her for researching it.

TenFeetTall · 22/04/2017 12:38

Something to be aware of are the markers under the questions for what is important to you. Changing those changed my result as it gives more weight to the things you deem most important.

A strong belief in an area such as gay marriage, pro choice and other similar issues can lead you to a party you may not have thought of.

TreeTop7 · 22/04/2017 12:39

THat said, I know loads of English people who get Plaid Cymru on those quizzes. Maybe Ms Wood should expand into England!

pigsDOfly · 22/04/2017 12:54

Another Plaid Cymru, SNP and Sinn Fein here. All a fair way from Sussex, which is where I live.

Next on the list was Greens and having, in the past, lived under their system for a number of years, there's no way in hell I'd vote for them.

Can't help feeling this is probably not the ideal way to decide how you're going to vote.
