To think DD shouldn't vote the party that a quiz told her to?

DD1 is 18 and this will be her first time to vote. She did an online quiz that tells you which party you suit to vote for. AIBU to think this isn't the best way?

I did the quiz and my top 3 choices were Plaid Cymru, SNP and Sein Fenn. V helpful when I live in English.

befuddledgardener · 22/04/2017 14:40

I side with the Scottish national party for 75%. Sadly I don't live in Scotland! Greens then labour

KingsCross88 · 22/04/2017 18:47

I took that quiz, and got Liberal Democrats - I was going to vote for them anyway, good to have it confirmed!

GreyVelvet · 22/04/2017 23:09

It's interesting how many English voters agree most with Welsh, Scottish and n Ireland parties

BillyButtfuck · 22/04/2017 23:22

Mine came out as BNP ShockBlush won't be voting for them.

Batghee · 22/04/2017 23:24

If the quiz is detailed and is on current manifestos then i think its actually a very good way to decide who to vote for! YABU

CaulkheadNorth · 22/04/2017 23:26

At her age I would vote for the independent candidate as I was worried no one else would...

Just talk together, watch the news, read manifestos etc. Some areas have a "meet the parties" events where you go and discuss stuff with the people you will be voting for.

MaryCrawley · 22/04/2017 23:45

I got joint first - LibDem and Tory.

This can only mean that I'm exactly 50% evil. Grin

Isn't it? And I think it shows what we are missing in England.

Flopjustwantscoffee · 23/04/2017 00:16

I think it's a good start for thinking about the issues but isn't enough by itself because it doesn't take into account how much you can trust what each party says on particular policy areas which is much more subjective. For example the BNP throws a lot of good sounding stuff into their manifesto about healthcare, transport but I personally don't think they really give a shiny fuck about that side of things. That's my bias though, but I think having a sense of what actually matters the most to each party matters...

Flopjustwantscoffee · 23/04/2017 00:22

Likewise I live in the Netherlands and agree with the delightful Wilber's on gay rights, women's rights in theory. But in reality I feel he's referencing them as a kind of dog whistle tactic...

Flopjustwantscoffee · 23/04/2017 00:23

Wilber? Wilder rather.

Huldra · 23/04/2017 00:30

Did she say I don't know who to vote for so I will take this test to find out and then actually vote for them?

If it's general chat and taking an online test to get ideas then she's thinking and deciding. It's not the easiest of elections fo many people to decide what to do.

BackforGood · 23/04/2017 00:41

I think that particular quiz that is linked to on P1 is pretty poor - the questions are all a bit 'headline - y' without giving more "it depends" options.
However, in previous elections there have been some excellent ones about. There have also been websites that do comparison charts from all the parties on particular issues - so you click on 'education' or 'taxes' or 'environmental issues' or whatever and it will put all the parties' stance on that topic alongside each other. You can then note which of the promises / stances of the party most matches yours rather than some tabloid headline about what a muslim woman may or not wear at a civic ceremony Hmm

It's really good that your dd is finding out for herself what she might vote for, rather than just blindly following anyone - be that her parents or her friends.
The best advice though would be to look at several different sites and not decide on one quiz alone.
Also, to acknowledge there is probably no single party that campaigns in exactly the same way as her thinking on all issues, and that she has to vote for the 'best fit' at the time.

Another great thing to do is to go to a local hustings. Sadly I'm not sure if there will be enough time to organise one this time with such a short run in, but the 'Churches together' have historically organised one in our area for many elections. They are really interesting if run well.
I'd also advise everyone that the best thing is not to tell people who they are voting for - ever. That way, everyone gets to vote for who they actually think should win, and not be swayed by 'being different' or not being swayed into not voting because 'the polls' tell you you won't be able to influence the vote in your constituency, etc.

MommaGee · 23/04/2017 00:46

Plaid Cymru need to run in England, I got them first too!

DoNotBlameMeIVotedRemain · 23/04/2017 11:19

I got SNP first, Plaid Cymru second. I believe strongly the UK should be united so clearly this is a nonsense. Third by a fairly narrow margin was LibDem. I was probably going to vote for them anyway. I might, for instance, agree with UKIP about grammar schools. As a remain voter there's no way I'd vote for them in a million years. So the weighting in the quizzes is a nonsense but I get a useful starting point to investigate other options out there. I do think you should be able to click which part of the UK you are in though.

WatchHowISoar · 01/05/2017 15:58

I'd not vote tory either but it's her choice who to vote for. It's not pleasant to feel disappointed, but different people have different priorities and she may well not like who you vote for and feel disappointed too.

Given she's 18 you can have some great debates on a Weekend over a glass of wine Grin ; just remember though if you do that a debate is based on opinion and neither of your opinions is fact. I love debating with dpil but not dp because the latter just see their way as right.
