AIBU to loathe the Royal Family

The way the media is so gushing about everything Wills, Kate and Harry do, just been watching the evening news, there is a story about Wills and Kate doing a radio broadcast, makes me want to vomit..
And the issues about mental health - really? Do we need Royal 'endorsement' just to get more funding?

Yabvvvvu and sound like you have a case of sour grapes. Anything to help break down the stigma of mental health illness, and to bring it in the forefront is a good thing. At the end of the day, they are still human being like us, they lost their mother at a very young age, in incredibly tragic circumstances. It can't have been easy having your grief as a child, being put out there in public, unable to grieve in private. Tbh, I would hate to be a Royal or married in the Royal Family, you can have all the money in the world, does not make you happy, yes it makes being unhappy a hell of a lot easier, but does not mean your happy.

AIBU to loathe people who loathe the Royal family? Hmm

Aeroflotgirl · 22/04/2017 08:56

I think once the Queen goes, and the older Royals start to follow, either there will cease to be a monarchy, or it will change dramatically, already William and Harry are paving the way for the more approachable and in touch royals.

InWinoVeritas · 22/04/2017 09:11

OK so maybe I should clarify, its not them personally I loathe but the whole outdated notion of a Royal Family, the institution and everything associated with it.
Fenella, I actually work in Mental Health, which prompted my post but the point of my post is the Royal Family and not what I get up too.
Feels to me they use 'topical' charities to promote their celebrity and brand which I find loathsome.
I don't want them to sit in the palace all day drinking tea at the taxpayers expense, I'd like them to get out of the palace altogether and get a real job like the majority of the UK population.

inwino which is what Prince William does as an air ambulance pilot. Part of Their job as Royals is to support and patronage charities, which is what their doing.Using their experiences and status for good. Wod you rather they sit in the palace drinking cups of tea do no charity work. Good on them! Just because their Royals, does not mean their immune to mental health issues, their mum also had mental health issues.

BlindAssassin1 · 22/04/2017 09:21

Yanbu. I find it bizzare that people would fawn over such privileged people that had the good fortune to be born to a certain family!

Aeroflotgirl · 22/04/2017 09:22

Lots of sour grapes on her, it's rather tiresome.

scaryteacher · 22/04/2017 09:22

Tabbymog Prince Andrew must have converted to a full career or medium commission to stay in as long as he did, as a short commission was 12 years, and he did 22, and the long staff course is for those who will stay in. Your comment about a degree is a load of bollocks, as he wasn't an Engineer Officer, so a degree wasn't necessary. FYI, my Dad was an RN Officer who came up from the ranks, no A levels, no degree, just 4 O levels. My db, who is a Cdr RN, joined with A levels, and has no initial degree. It hasn't made a difference at all.

Prince Andrew was 41 when he left the RN. The buzz was that he wasn't going to make Captain, and the jobs available if he wasn't going to get another drive, or promoted, didn't appeal. Quite a few of the seaman officers we knew left at about that time.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 22/04/2017 09:23

I'd like them to get out of the palace altogether and get a real job like the majority of the UK population.

Wasn't Wills a Search and Rescue Pilot for a while? Do you not consider that a proper job then? Given both brothers have sizable allowances from their Mother it's not like they needed to get a job either of them. Surely they both should have been commended for that and Harry fighting on the frontline too. Is that not a proper job also? Confused

Feels to me they use 'topical' charities to promote their celebrity and brand which I find loathsome

Flipping it on its head, I think they actually use their celebrity status to promote these topical charities. If you work in MH surely you'd see this as a good thing? It needs normalising. I had a nervous breakdown a few years ago after a succession of life events got too much for me, there's still members of my own family who haven't a clue whilst I'm really currently off work.

alltouchedout · 22/04/2017 09:24

The whole concept of hereditary royalty bemuses me. I have nothing against the royals as people but their status and that we fund them infuriate me and I would love to see us become a Republic.

user1491678180 · 22/04/2017 09:28

Agree with aeroflot girl. Lots of sour grapes, bitterness, jealousy, and nastiness towards the Royals on this thread. Got to feel sad for these people really. Must be horrible to have so much bitterness and hatred inside, towards people who have done sod-all to deserve it.

user1491678180 · 22/04/2017 09:30

Also, I find that the 'how dare they live at the taxpayers expense?' brigade who say they are 'bone idle shirkers' and suchlike, are almost ALWAYS people who don't work, and don't even pay tax themselves PMSL!

zippey · 22/04/2017 09:35

Id rather save my sympathy for people who are being made redundant, who are going through real anxieties and mental health issues.

Years of scandal, inbreeding, nazi supporting... Yes it's time to get shot of them.

Asmoto · 22/04/2017 09:35

User That's not my experience - all the republicans I know who dislike the idea of the Royals living at public expense, including me, are lifelong taxpayers.

Everytimeref · 22/04/2017 09:36

More than happy to have a Queen if she was self funding. They are rich enough to not require money from the state. When the Queen runs out of money then the state can step in to help.

LizzieMacQueen · 22/04/2017 09:41

I'd prefer our Royal family to adopt a more modern look. Like the Royals of the Netherlands or Spain.

Personally I'm not keen on a Queen Camilla given the history of their infidelity.

ssd · 22/04/2017 10:01

did any of you watch the royal family christmas special by harry enfield?

its utterly hilarious

its called The Windsors, it was on channel 4, really really funny

songlark · 22/04/2017 10:09

Yanbu, as individuals i don't have an issue, but i i hate that we have a monarchy, the sooner we have a republic the better. There is no evidence that they bring any extra income into the country through tourism, our international trade deals would still thrive and probably improve without them. They really do cost us a fortune, the crown estates belong to the nation, so altogether when you add up that lost income, with their huge security costs, and costs by local government they cost the taxpayer over £300 million, that's more than the cancer bill fund, it would pay for 14.000 more police officers on the streets or 15.000 new teachers.

Why should ministers tell us to tighten our belts and accept massive public sector cuts to jobs and essential services while at the same time allow Prince Charles to take a £30.000 chartered plane for a 4 day jaunt to Scotland. What a blatant abuse of public funds, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. They are an unaffordable drain on the country, and once the queen goes that should be it.

Pinkandwhiteblossoms · 22/04/2017 10:22

Weird that people assume a questionable stance towards the role stems from jealousy. It confirms a sense I have that the Royals act for some as a sort of picture-perfect vision of what life should look like.

Perhaps if I thought about it I might be jealous but I do not live in London and despite having children a similar age to George and Charlotte their life is as far removed from mine as the Tudors or the Romans. I can't imagine being jealous as I can't imagine being them in any real sense.

My sole objections are to a role that is created by birth. I do not feel that is right at all.

InWinoVeritas · 22/04/2017 10:32

songlark, good post and I quite agree.

Pinkandwhite, also agree, the notion that we are 'jealous' of the royals is as ridiculous as being jealous of Snow White or Micky Mouse.

It seems like the majority of people here agree it is time for UK to become a Republic, I look forward to the revolution and expect you all to be right behind me :)

OP posts:
NotStoppedAllDay · 22/04/2017 10:33

There will be no 'revolution'.... people are cowards these days

Pinkandwhiteblossoms · 22/04/2017 10:37

I don't think people are cowards but comparatively we have more to lose, haven't we?

I know Wat Tyler was decapitated and all, but still, life in 14th century England was pretty miserable. Same in France at the time of the revolution. Modern day misery is more insidious. We won't starve - some might die slowly of malnutrition and obesity - or be worked to death. We have televisions and anti depressants. It gives people a kind of passivity.

stevie69 · 22/04/2017 10:40

Yanbu. Bunch of inbred thieves and scroungers.

Charming. Wonder if they'd say the same about your family? And how you'd feel about that if they did?

There are some unpleasant people on here. Why that surprises me, I don't know really.
