To ask how you pronounce Amelia

DD is called Amelia. Most people I know seem to pronounce it 'ah-mil-yuh', which is how I have always said it. However, we have recently moved to a completely new area and EVERYONE here pronounces it 'ah-mee-lee-yah', which imo sounds so so annoying. I know I am probably being pretentious not liking the way people say it, but I never realised it was pronounced like that!

Is this the normal way and I've always been saying it wrong??

My daughter is Amelia, we pronounce it the second way.

Namesarehard · 19/04/2017 14:10

My daughters name is Amelia. Said the end way. Not annoying sounding at all! How rude.

Namesarehard · 19/04/2017 14:11

*2nd

Penhacked · 19/04/2017 14:12

If you think that's bad OP, our Amelia gets ameel-i-yuh from English northern family and AM-ay-li+ah from Italian family. I chop and change depending on which country we're in!!

Chaotica · 19/04/2017 14:14

The first way with the stress in the middle (or with a 'ya' on the end, but that sounds similar when I say it). Similar ending to how you'd say 'Katya' or 'Nadya'. I know it can be pronounced the second way but that isn't the way I'd say it unless I was really trying to pronounce every letter in the name.

farfarawayfromhome · 19/04/2017 14:22

second way here too. sorry OP!

floraeasy · 19/04/2017 14:24

I'd pronounce it the second way, and like others, have never heard it pronounced any differently.

UppityHumpty · 19/04/2017 14:28

I use the second pronunciation. The first one is would turn it into an Indian name (Amilya).

MintTpls · 19/04/2017 14:29

For Amelia and Emilia I'd say it:

Am-mee-lia
Em-mil-lia

That's ok right?

morningconstitutional2017 · 19/04/2017 14:30

It obviously depends on which neck of the woods you live in but round here (East Midlands) we've always said 'A-meel-ya' with the emphasis on the middle syllable.

Supermam · 19/04/2017 14:31

1st! Probably a Welsh thing...

notangelinajolie · 19/04/2017 14:33

2nd way. You can't make a 4 syllable word into 3 unless you are saying it wrong. So sorry OP Flowers

TheMysteriousJackelope · 19/04/2017 14:36

I would pronounce it the second way too.

My friend from the Republic of Georgia would say it the first way.

If you prefer the first way, just tell the people you see regularly how it is supposed to be correctly pronounced. Most people want to pronounce names as their owners (or parents of very young owners) want.

Darbs76 · 19/04/2017 14:38

Just re-read OP and realised I say the second- never heard Ah-mil-e-ah - it's Ah-meel-ah. Just tell them you PN it different but they will always call it her as that's how it's pronounced

Namesarehard · 19/04/2017 14:44

I wouldn't agree that it's a Welsh thing. I'm welsh and also speak fluent welsh. I still say it the second way.

AliceKlar · 19/04/2017 14:48

I've only ever heard it said your second way where I live. W Yorks.

happypoobum · 19/04/2017 14:48

I am in South East and never heard anyone pronounce it Ah Mil Yuh. Very strange.

It's Ah meeee leeee yer

Rossigigi · 19/04/2017 14:53

Second way here as well and all the Amelia's I know pronounce it the second way too.

OftenFoundWasting · 19/04/2017 14:56

The only Amelia we known is American, and she is pronounced the second way.

OftenFoundWasting · 19/04/2017 14:57

know

Rossigigi · 19/04/2017 15:01

I think OP had now realised she's been saying her daughters name wrong her whole life- oops

MerryMarigold · 19/04/2017 15:02

I've never heard anyone say Ah or Ar mee Lee yer. Always an 'uh' at the beginning and end. The same way you'd say ' there's a cat' (not Ah cat or ay cat).

Do people really say it beginning Ah??

happypoobum · 19/04/2017 15:10

Interesting Merry
I would pronounce it Ah but I think I probably sound quite RP.

I have heard it pronounced Er mee leee yer and Uh mee leee yer.

Just never heard it pronounced the way the poor OP intended. OP, will you change the spelling now to reflect the pronunciation of the name you want DD to have? I probably would.

Bibs2014 · 19/04/2017 15:13

ah-mee-lee-yah
