To ask how you pronounce Amelia

DD is called Amelia. Most people I know seem to pronounce it 'ah-mil-yuh', which is how I have always said it. However, we have recently moved to a completely new area and EVERYONE here pronounces it 'ah-mee-lee-yah', which imo sounds so so annoying. I know I am probably being pretentious not liking the way people say it, but I never realised it was pronounced like that!

Is this the normal way and I've always been saying it wrong??

Second way here OP.

London born and bred.

ClarkWGriswold · 19/04/2017 13:03

The second way for me. I've never heard it pronounced the first way. I'm from the South if that makes a difference.

TheReefer · 19/04/2017 13:14

The second way A-meelee-ya

givemestrengthorgin · 19/04/2017 13:16

I've almost always heard it pronounced "a-meal-ya" .

I know one woman who pounces it "am-e-lee-a" and thought it was odd! I'm in Scotland if that makes a difference.

SpreadYourHappiness · 19/04/2017 13:17

Second way. Never heard the first.

PattyPenguin · 19/04/2017 13:24

Definitely a-meel-ee-ya - four syllables, but you can hear the 'y' before the last a. Which is common in English - listen to people say 'genius'.

Itmustbemyage · 19/04/2017 13:26

Second way for me born in south east England now living in Scotland.
It's how it's spelt, never thought it could be said in any other way.

user1492458803 · 19/04/2017 13:27

'ah-mee-lee-yah'
I've never heard it pronounced any other way and I'm from the south.

VeryFoolishFay · 19/04/2017 13:28

My DD is also Amelia - pronounced the second way. She's now 21 - I like to think of myself as a bit of a standard bearer - there's never been any in her year at school.

thedcbrokemybank · 19/04/2017 13:29

Second way but I have a friend who is Polish who has a daughter called America and she pronounces it the first way.

ChaiTeaTaiChi · 19/04/2017 13:30

EVERYONE here pronounces it 'ah-mee-lee-yah', which imo sounds so so annoying

That is how the name is pronounced! How could you pick it without knowing that?

Daydream007 · 19/04/2017 13:36

Woops I've been saying 'ah-mee-lee-ya' to quite a few girls I know called Amelia. I've never heard anyone pronounce it your way even in 'well to do' circles! Just accept it.

Wh0Kn0wsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/04/2017 13:37

Second way for me too, SE England. I don't know many, but have always pronounced it that way since reading the Naughty Amelia Jane books as a child.

ClockBusCanada · 19/04/2017 13:39

I'm in Scotland and have relatives who pronounce it Ah-mee-ull-ya, with most of the stress on the 'ull'. I have a colleague called Amelia who pronounces it the second way in the OP, but goes by Amy to cut down on explanation time.

IloveBanff · 19/04/2017 13:40

A-mee-lee-a is the only way I've ever heard it pronounced.

Darbs76 · 19/04/2017 13:41

First way - definitely. Never ever heard anyone PN it the second way

AuldHeathen · 19/04/2017 13:46

Definitely the 2nd way. Friend with Aussie accent does too. She has a child called Amelia.

FrenchJunebug · 19/04/2017 13:46

the second way to pronounce it. Why choose such a french name if you do not like how it is pronounced?!

CancellyMcChequeface · 19/04/2017 13:48

Ah-meel-yah, only three syllables, but with a definite ee rather than ih sound in the middle. I'm in London.

pinkie1982 · 19/04/2017 13:49

The second way, I didn't know about the first way??

speedynamechange73 · 19/04/2017 13:50

My friend calls her DD Ah meely ah (no particular emphasis on any bit)

I'm saying it over in my head and I think I probably would say A meely ah too!

Applebite · 19/04/2017 13:52

Definitely am-ee-lee-yar.

Sorry OP!

EmNetta · 19/04/2017 13:54

Me too, pinkie (and I'm in Yorkshire).

GaladrielsRing · 19/04/2017 14:01

Dd14 is Ah me li ah.

My Lithuanian friend has a 3 yo called emilja pronounced em il yah

hazeyjane · 19/04/2017 14:01

I know 4 Amelia's. Have only ever heard it pronounced the 4 syllable Am - ee - lee - a
