To ask how you pronounce Amelia

DD is called Amelia. Most people I know seem to pronounce it 'ah-mil-yuh', which is how I have always said it. However, we have recently moved to a completely new area and EVERYONE here pronounces it 'ah-mee-lee-yah', which imo sounds so so annoying. I know I am probably being pretentious not liking the way people say it, but I never realised it was pronounced like that!

Is this the normal way and I've always been saying it wrong??

1 millionth vote for A-me-lee-ya

Jux · 19/04/2017 15:18

At prep school, 50 odd years ago, we had two Julias, and because we were all a bit posh they were definitely Jool-ya, not Ju-lee-a. It's just the accent, upper middle class as opposed to lower middle class. I daresay they're both Ju-lee-as now Wink

Elphame · 19/04/2017 15:21

Second way for me too. I've never heard it pronounced the first way and I've lived in many parts of the UK

Pigface1 · 19/04/2017 15:21

Billionth vote for a-mee-lee-ya

Never heard a-meel-ya

ispentitwithyou1 · 19/04/2017 15:23

What about Sophia?! Sophie-a? Suffphere?

CasperGutman · 19/04/2017 15:24

I grew up in Lancashire but have long lived in the south and have always "talked posh".

I can't even imagine an "RP" way of saying the first version. As a result, I'm inclined to think they're not really distinct pronunciations. Apart from the stressing or not of the third syllable, most of the difference is just the accent of the person saying the name.

OhGood · 19/04/2017 15:26

My favourite shorter version of Ah-mee-lee-ya is 'Mia'.

NotMyPenguin · 19/04/2017 15:28

If I heard somebody say the first version, I'd assume they were saying Emilia.

Xmasbaby11 · 19/04/2017 15:32

2nd version. 4 syllables

goodomens830 · 19/04/2017 16:54

I can't help but laugh. You've been saying it wrong the whole time. Hilarious! But that's ok, she can rock it like that. She'll just explain her parents were special ;)

MaisyPops · 19/04/2017 16:58

I think OP had now realised she's been saying her daughters name wrong her whole life
Reminds me of a girl I went to school with called Megan. Simple you think... nope. it wasn't pronounced 'meg+an' it was pronounced "meee-gan".
And she'd get annoyed about people like supply teachers reading the register as meg+an!! Hmm

happypoobum · 19/04/2017 17:16

I once interviewed a woman called Janine.

I shook her hand and said "Nice to meet you Ja - neen"

She said "No - It's Jannin"

She didn't get the job Grin

I know a Mee-gan, she's Australian, I just assumed it was an Aussie thing! She's in her 30's.

CheeseQueen · 19/04/2017 18:21

Definitely Ah meel - ee yah here, so your second one! Never heard anyone say it your first way, and I know a few Amelias of school age.

TeaQuiero · 19/04/2017 18:28

Maybe you're comparing dialects or accents?

I mean, it's Am E Li A, the E is there. Perhaps in your accent you blend the E into other sounds.

Darcy might sound like Darcy in the South, but where I'm from it could sound more like Dar-SEH. Not a new pronunciation or a variant - just the accent.

monkeytoad35 · 19/04/2017 18:33

A-mee-lee-ya. It would sound weird pronounced any other way. Sorry OP.

DayGlo · 19/04/2017 18:41

Am-ee-lee-ya. Never heard it pronounced any other way. I'm in London.

MrsCharlieD · 19/04/2017 18:45

Second way and I'm northern and have a Yorkshire accent.

I'm sorry to tell you you have been pouncing your daughters name incorrectly all thus time!

Sugarformyhoney · 19/04/2017 19:38

I live in the south east and know several Amelias- everyone I know prounounces A mee leea. That is how it's spelt?
The only alternative I know is Emilia which is pronounced E-Mill-ia

ArriettyClock1 · 19/04/2017 19:43

I know a hundred Amelias, OK 4, and they are all A-mee-li-ah.

IsadoraQuagmire · 19/04/2017 19:47

Second way, 4 syllables. It's my middle name.

Rachel0Greep · 19/04/2017 19:47

I have only ever heard it pronounced the second way.

EggysMom · 19/04/2017 20:20

I know this name as either Ah-meely-ah or Ah-meel-ya.

The former when saying the name in full (i.e. when they are naughty!) and the latter when saying the name in a hurry (it shrinks to 3 syllables).

stoopido · 19/04/2017 20:25

The second way.

Violetcharlotte · 19/04/2017 20:27

I've always pronounced it Ah- mee - Lee -a. I've never heard it pronounced the other way tbh
