To be angry and upset with my DM?

onthettcbus · 14/04/2017 10:46

Ddog was bought for me when I was 15 and became the 'family' dog as I was still a child and she has continued to live with my mum whilst I lived away at university, mum paid for all vaccinations etc as I had no income, dog is now 9 and has been perfectly healthy up until now. The issue is her pet insurance has always been taken from dm's bank as it was set up when she was a puppy and as far as I was aware dm had continued to pay it, I have asked her several times in the past if the pet insurance is still set up and she has lied and said yes it's fine and she didn't want me to pay it, which I would have been more than happy to do. Now ddog has taken ill and requires 600 pounds worth of veterinary treatment and mum has confessed that she has cancelled her pet insurance and is not willing to pay the bill. I am upset as I am almost four months pregnant, money is tight and all she said was 'well, you should have taken responsibility for your own dog and not relied on someone else then shouldn't you'. I will pay it as there is no way I will let her suffer but i will have to use credit cards or some of the savings that I had put away for the baby. Am I i being unreasonable to be angry with her or should I have just taken responsibility for the pet insurance myself?

Reclaim your dog, and bring her to live with you, if you can cope with work / dog/ baby.
View the £600 as an accumulation of the money you would have spent over the last few years on insurance,

Otherwise, tell your Mum that she is now her dog and leave her with your Mum but be aware that your Mum would leave the dog uncared for in terms of the operation. In which case it is your choice as to whether you pay. Because if you can't cope with the dog in your current / new life, your Mum would be doing you a favour by caring for her on your behalf.

It is food for thought wrt buying a pet that will outlive the (child) owner's move from home.

SoulAccount · 14/04/2017 12:08

P.S of course you are NBU to be upset with your Mum for lying about the insurance.

PyongyangKipperbang · 14/04/2017 12:15

Sounds like she wants all the benefits of owning a dog without any of the associated costs, well it doesnt work like that! Either he is her dog in which case she pays or he is yours and you take him home.

YANBU to be pissed off, why lie if you were offering to pay for the insurance? Did she know that you were offering to pay? The only reason I can think for her lying is that she couldnt afford it and didnt know that you would have taken that cost on yourself if she wasnt paying it.

£600?
what sort of treatment?
she is 9,
does she really need to go through the treatment at her age?

onthettcbus · 14/04/2017 12:17

It is the removal of lumps that have appeared on her but the vet recommend that they are removed incase they turn cancerous.

Seems like a weird unnessecary recommendation from the vet

TiredCluelessMummy · 14/04/2017 12:21

Norma depending on the breed the dog could have plenty of years ahead of it so it's not necessarily correct to withdraw or refuse treatment based on age. One of my dogs lived to 15, the other lived to 14. So if we had refused treatment for something at 9 we would have potentially denied them many years of happy life.

Bantanddec · 14/04/2017 12:21

Wtf I'd be livid! Yanbu!

user1489261248 · 14/04/2017 12:21

YANBU

Your mother is being unreasonable. What the hell did she cancel the insurance for? Dogs need MORE vet treatment as they get older, not less FGS.

user1489261248 · 14/04/2017 12:23

Agree it's wrong to assume a dog of 9 should not deserve treatment. That's only middle aged-ish. That's like saying a person doesn't deserve treatment if they're over 50! Confused

BigGrannyPants · 14/04/2017 12:23

If it makes you feel better OP, if the lumps were not cancerous or life threatening etc the insurance wouldn't have paid anyway. They would of made if your decision to get the lumps removed and only would've paid if they turned out to be something bad

NormaSmuff · 14/04/2017 12:26

what type of dog is it?

NormaSmuff · 14/04/2017 12:26

so the insurance may well have not paid.

your dm is not paying.

is it a necessary operation?

FittonTower · 14/04/2017 12:26

I realise that the thread is not about this (and it's not the dog's actual name) but Ddog is an awesome name for a dog. Very street.

onthettcbus · 14/04/2017 12:27

She is a small westie x bichon freise.

OP posts:
NormaSmuff · 14/04/2017 12:28

if your dm doenst have the money, didnt have the money for pet insurance there is no need to be angry with her.

whether or not you feel you have to spend £600 on a just in case on a dog that is effectively your mother's is a different scenario.

gillybeanz · 14/04/2017 12:29

Either get the dog back and pay for everything, or your dm keeps dog and pays for everything.

NormaSmuff · 14/04/2017 12:30

but her mum doesnt want to pay, and nor can you force her.

NormaSmuff · 14/04/2017 12:31

i dont have pet insurance and i didnt have house insurance for years
so strike me down

onthettcbus · 14/04/2017 12:32

Norma I am not angry about her not having the money to pay for the insurance i am angry about her lying and saying that she was paying it when she wasn't.

OP posts:
NormaSmuff · 14/04/2017 12:33

so you pay for it.

onthettcbus · 14/04/2017 12:35

The issue isn't me paying for it the issue is her lying Confused

OP posts:
NormaSmuff · 14/04/2017 12:35

it is your dm's dog,

onthettcbus · 14/04/2017 12:35

I've already said I will pay for it.

OP posts:
Cherrysoup · 14/04/2017 12:35

Ok, ask the vet for a fine needle aspiration. Sod the £600 op! The aspiration will tell you if the lumps are cancerous. 9 times out of 10, lumps appearing in older dogs are lipomas, fatty lumps. The vet is taking the piss to want to immediately go for a massive operation requiring sedation. I have been there, done that with my dog, each time, it's a fatty lump.

Honestly, OP, don't let the vet do this until you know for sure it needs doing and take your dog back! Your DM is having a laugh!
