To think that this woman on her gap year, wanting to adopt an African baby and bring him back to the UK, is ridiculous...

metro.co.uk/2017/04/10/british-teacher-moves-to-africa-to-adopt-boy-she-cared-for-while-on-her-gap-year-6564554/

When there are multiple 100s of 1000s of children in this country needing loving homes, this woman on her 'gap yar' has decided she wants to bring this little boy home from Uganda and adopt him. Unreasonable? Or perfectly OK?

She has even set up a gofundme page for her legal fees!

I think it's ridiculous personally.

Hmm while I can see why she wants to adopt him, I'm a bit uncomfortable about the idea of his siblings being left behind, no word about what has happened to them presumably because they're not cute cuddly babies ?

You DO realise that adopters in the UK don't adopt 7 siblings....Yes???

Fauchelevent · 10/04/2017 20:39

What are we supposed to find ridiculous about this exactly?

Gallavich · 10/04/2017 20:40

If he does have an attachment to her then her yoyoing in and out of his life has likely done him more harm than good

Not really. She's been with him the majority of his life from 5 days old.

BrutusMcDogface · 10/04/2017 20:44

Yup, yabu.

She's 25. As another poster said, she has the world at her feet, yet she's chosen to be his mother and to do all she can to make that possible.

Also- let's be realistic- even if she wanted to adopt any child, she would be highly unlikely to have been found as a suitable adopter in the UK

She will have to go through exactly the same process as any other adopter for approval when she returns to the UK. This has been the case since the 1990s when a pair of twins were stolen from their adoptive parents and sold to a very odd UK couple. The Gillicks? Killicks? The law changed after that high profile case.

BrutusMcDogface · 10/04/2017 20:47

Oh and I'm assuming "school" fees are for the nursery that looks after him while she works!

FirstSeemItThenBeIt · 10/04/2017 20:48

I'll be sure to tell my friend, who adopted her son from Romania after he was diagnosed with HIV when she was there volunteering in his orphanage, that she's a dilletante who is neglecting UK-based babies. Confused

Reputable orphanages do not allow tourists visiting for a short while to look after children in this way. This woman was sole carer of him from 6 days old. That was very unfair on the child.

PupPupBoogie · 10/04/2017 20:52

She was jappy to trot back home to be a bridesmaid though and hand him over to someone else. Hardly a stable committed relationship.

pennypickle · 10/04/2017 20:52

OP you seem to have done a runner. Please come back and explain why you think a 25 year wanting to offer a great life to a baby is "ridiculous"......

Instasista · 10/04/2017 20:57

Billsykes I obviously don't know but assume due to her age and financial circumstances she wouldn't be considered particularly favourable to adopt here, but Uk children in care have very different needs to this boy generally

BillSykesDog · 10/04/2017 20:58

No, it's not to do with Gillick Law. It's not medical. Their name might not even have been Gillick.

It was a couple in the 90s. A pair of African American twins were adopted by an African American couple, but the adoption agency got them back on some pretext and essentially sold them to a British couple who brought them here. The African American couple wanted the children back and launched proceedings. The British couple went on a publicity blitz trying to get support. But it backfired because they were obviously complete florid nutters and the public were horrified that they had ever been allowed to adopt. They had been turned down as UK adopters but turned to international adoption to circumvent that. It brought to light that unsuitable people could adopt by getting children from countries where rules were lax exposing them to abuse. As a result the law was changed so now all UK adoptions from abroad have to be approved by SS in the same way as UK adoptions. This can be retrospective while the child is living with them though. Just wish I could remember the name!

Lunde · 10/04/2017 21:01

You are a tad confused there, Gillick law is a completely different thing

I think PP means the Kilshaws - the couple that bought twins on the internet in the early 2000 in an illegal adoption - but SS took them into care and returned them to the US

BillSykesDog · 10/04/2017 21:01

She was jappy to trot back home to be a bridesmaid though and hand him over to someone else. Hardly a stable committed relationship

So would you say a natural parent shouldn't leave their child for a few days or they're not 'committed'. Half the children in the country would be in care then!

Owllady · 10/04/2017 21:01

I think she sounds like a lovely human being tbh

acquiescence · 10/04/2017 21:02

Did you actually read the article OP?!

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 10/04/2017 21:09

I think it is a lovely story

They have formed an attachment built on love care and trust it's heartbreaking to think how he would miss her (and her him) if she couldn't adopt him she has certainly shown how dedicated she is towards caring for him

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 10/04/2017 21:11

Well aren't you a delight OP Hmm

mygorgeousmilo · 10/04/2017 21:11

I'll add to her go fund me Smile

indigox · 10/04/2017 21:16

You think it's ridiculous for her to adopt a child she's been parenting for his whole life? Aren't you a joy?
