AIBU to beg you not to bet on the Grand National? It's animal abuse.

Please think about what you're condoning.

www.independent.co.uk/voices/grand-national-races-animal-cruelty-get-rid-of-dangerous-jump-a7672131.html

"It’s time for the Grand National again – that curious time of year when people who claim to like horses gather to exploit them, often hurting and killing them in the process.

Since 2000, 48 horses have died at the annual festival that the National is part of. Others have suffered horribly with broken backs, necks or legs, severed tendons, or heart attacks. This is the reality of British horse racing."

If you use this as entertainment, the blood of murdered horses is on your hands as well.

Would you bet on a race where human beings fell and broke their legs or necks and had to be shot? At least they would have consented. Horses cannot consent to this life.

Would you be "fine" with it as long as it hadn't happened since 2012, despite horses dying after the race from their injuries since then?

Please don't be dazzled by the so-called glamour of this bloodsport.

BadLad

Could you post a link?

On the brightside we now have a number to add to the how do you know if someone is a vegan joke.

SpreadYourHappiness · 08/04/2017 16:46

It's not bollocks. If you read that article, it say no horses have died during the actual Grand National. Maybe at meets surrounding it, but not the actual Grand National race itself.

You might want to read articles you're posting to make sure they don't prove you wrong.

Thattimeofyearagain · 08/04/2017 16:46

Its not animal abuse, you sound unhinged. You stick to your principles and I'll stick to mine ( and mine are informed)

EatSpamAmandaLamb · 08/04/2017 16:46

Oh and I consider raising children to be vegan is a form of abuse.

Mummyoflittledragon · 08/04/2017 16:46

Vertical why do they have to be whipped if they love it so much? Take it you don't know much about horses.

SpreadYourHappiness · 08/04/2017 16:47

Mummyoflittledragon The OP knows nothing about horses; she just keeps proving her ignorance.

BadKnee · 08/04/2017 16:48

Did you just link a horse race to child porn?? Really??

It is very unlikely that you live a life which does not impact negatively on either animals or other people.

As EatSpam said, do you eat grains which are freighted across the world?? Buy cheap clothes made in sweatshops in Asia by 12 year olds?? Do you you drive?? Use drugs and cosmetics that were tested on animals ? etc etc

If you want to do something about certain things - eg the race - then do. But don't preach. And do not call a family amoral when you know nothing about their lives or morals at all.

Thattimeofyearagain · 08/04/2017 16:48

When the whip is used its the sound that spurs a horse on. Honestly, educate yourself you daft mare. Spouting out about abuse when you know NOTHING about racing/ racehorses Hmm

hhorvath · 08/04/2017 16:48

I'm sure those that "know so much about horses" are the ones that think it's fine to whip them and sit on their backs for their own selfish fun.

OP posts:
PollytheDolly · 08/04/2017 16:48

Oh fuck off. Don't be so preachy about something you know so little about. Yabu and goady.
Why have I just read a thread about eating meat and now this? We must be bored of criticising parenting and mil's so moved onto animal cruelty.

Oh really? I'm a horsewoman, and not a traditional one either. I have friends in that industry and were in that industry. The whole system is crap. People will tell you they love to run. Crap, I'm afraid. They are "treating like kings those horses". No they're not. A fancy stable and expensive bedding and food, a horse does not give a shit about. I could write pages and pages but I won't .

Watch this (and I'm not an animal aid devotee either)

CornflakeHomunculus · 08/04/2017 16:48

Betting is not abusive.

Arguments about horse racing aside, most of the big name bookmakers help fund the greyhound racing industry which is inarguably not only barbaric but horrendously corrupt.

Funding those bookmakers in turn helps fund greyhound racing which contributes to the deaths and disappearances of thousands of dogs every single year.

If you read that article, it say no horses have died during the actual Grand National.

Four of the six horses that died/were destroyed at last year's GN meeting did so either during or because of injuries sustained during races over the GN fences.

klondikecookie · 08/04/2017 16:49

EatSpamAmandaLamb - these 'people don't like being lectured' posts only seem to come up in animal rights threads. Oddly absent on feminist threads...

Moussemoose · 08/04/2017 16:50

I used to bet on the National until two years on the run the horse died. They had a sweepstake at work and I joined in. The horse died. The next year I was ill so a colleague drew my number for me. The horse died.

I stopped betting and I have made my views clear to all. So I think the horsies may be safe this year.

BeeFarseer · 08/04/2017 16:50

Genuine question - why are there never any 'this is abuse!' threads about other horse races? I never hear anything about Cheltenham, just to give an example.

BadLad · 08/04/2017 16:51

Boney, it's high up in the Chat forum.

To be fair, a lot of Vegans are criticizing the op for preaching.

hhorvath · 08/04/2017 16:52

People don't like being lectured because nobody likes being told that they're doing something wrong. It's an uncomfortable feeling.

But nothing will change while people stay in their insulated little bubbles pretending that their choices have no consequences.

What I don't understand is as with anything, if you point out something that they're doing unethically they will jump up your arse about your own choices (which by this point we've established, is more ethical than theirs)
Address OPs point or don't. But don't call her a preachy vegan when veganism wasn't mentioned until meat eating was (does that make you a preachy meat eater then? Biscuit )
Or jump up her arse about other unethical choices she may or may not make.
No one can be 100 percent ethical businesses are often built on employment conditions nothing short of slavery and I'm not just talking the likes of primark.
Palm oil is horrific for the environment yet is in thousands of normal foods across hundreds of brands. I'd be surprised if most of us haven't consumed it today.
That is different from willingly taking part in something that is nothing short of cruel just for a bit of £££ or fun.
It's funny how these debates never have anyone addressing the OPs point. You'd sooner all resort to name calling, questioning OP on irrelevant things (and insulting her being a vegan when that wasn't mentioned until someone else brought up their own culinary choices).
If you can't defend it effectively perhaps you shouldn't be doing it.
YANBU OP.

LettuceMash · 08/04/2017 16:52

If the horses don't it, when the rider falls off, why do they carry on running?

No reason for them to, they aren't being whipped, or geed on. I think they must enjoy it coz they are stubborn as fuck and usually only do what they want.

hhorvath · 08/04/2017 16:52

Threads always go like this:

"Please be aware this is animal abuse."
"Oh fuck off, I bet you eat steak! Hypocrite!"
"Actually I don't eat meat"
"Oh FOUND THE VEGAN"

Grow up.

The grand national is a public arena to the cruelty. Trust me it's the tip of a huge iceberg.

TheBookIsOnTheTable · 08/04/2017 16:53

Some people seem to have a very loose definition of "preaching", especially where certain topics are concerned..

Thattimeofyearagain · 08/04/2017 16:53

I did defend it. I know about it. She is spouting shite. Hth.

hhorvath · 08/04/2017 16:54

If the horses don't it, when the rider falls off, why do they carry on running?

Because they're herd animals and they run when they are panicked.
