AIBU to beg you not to bet on the Grand National? It's animal abuse.

Please think about what you're condoning.

www.independent.co.uk/voices/grand-national-races-animal-cruelty-get-rid-of-dangerous-jump-a7672131.html

"It’s time for the Grand National again – that curious time of year when people who claim to like horses gather to exploit them, often hurting and killing them in the process.

Since 2000, 48 horses have died at the annual festival that the National is part of. Others have suffered horribly with broken backs, necks or legs, severed tendons, or heart attacks. This is the reality of British horse racing."

If you use this as entertainment, the blood of murdered horses is on your hands as well.

Would you bet on a race where human beings fell and broke their legs or necks and had to be shot? At least they would have consented. Horses cannot consent to this life.

Would you be "fine" with it as long as it hadn't happened since 2012, despite horses dying after the race from their injuries since then?

Please don't be dazzled by the so-called glamour of this bloodsport.

Why have I just read a thread about eating meat and now this?

Please link. I love reading a good Mumsnet guilt-trip.

CocoTart · 08/04/2017 16:38

Sad? It's a party. We love it.

You don't sound like much fun OP, being vegan and that Wink

EatSpamAmandaLamb · 08/04/2017 16:38

Good post finn

hhorvath · 08/04/2017 16:39

Most adults make choices based on what they are comfortable with and don't appreciate being lectured.

I really don't have any sympathy for them. If i was doing something bad I would want to be told about it. Insulating yourself from the reality of your actions is childish.

BadLad · 08/04/2017 16:40

Don't worry - I found it.

Munches on horse meat popcorn.

Trifleorbust · 08/04/2017 16:40

I am definitely not ethical in every area of my life. As a result I try to refrain from being overly critical of others, in general and where there is subjectivity. But it is still my opinion that forcing animals to run and be killed for sport isn't ethical.

klondikecookie · 08/04/2017 16:40

EatSpamAmandaLamb - I doubt the OP or many others are 100% consistent with their ethics, but it's a ridiculously high bar to set. If someone sometimes drives a car, or occasionally travels by plane, should they be allowed to express any environmental concerns?

EatSpamAmandaLamb · 08/04/2017 16:40

I think shipping millions of avocados into the country for the Tumblr vegans is cruel to the planet.

Verticalvenetianblinds · 08/04/2017 16:40

Can't coz on my phone but someone clever will come and link, its so preachy! And for what its worth I have worked in the racing industry for years and I chose to eat meat but not dairy (for health reasons) and I get sick of ppl telling me how that makes me a bad person. I'll make sure I go to church tomoro then all will be forgiven.

Elledouble · 08/04/2017 16:40

I used to bet but there was a few years when loads of horses seemed to die, so I can't justify it to myself any more.

SuffolkBumkin · 08/04/2017 16:40

Yanbu op.

watchoutformybutt · 08/04/2017 16:40

Everybody loves a preachy vegan

Ampersand22 · 08/04/2017 16:41

Terrible.
YANBU

Coastalcommand · 08/04/2017 16:41

I agree 100% OP. It is a cruel race meeting not a fun family spectacle. I had to work at it for a number of years and I would never bet on it.
Even when horses don't die in the main race itself, many do you across the three day meeting. Last year six horses ride across the three days. It's very simple, you bet they die.

SpreadYourHappiness · 08/04/2017 16:41

I love the fact that you clearly ignored this in my post, OP, so I'll post it again Grin

In 2013 they changed the fences to make them safer, and no horses have died at the Grand National since then.

hhorvath · 08/04/2017 16:41

I don't eat avocados. Got anything else?

Nice deflection from the fact people are paying to watch abused animals run round a track for "fun".

OP posts:
finnmcool · 08/04/2017 16:43

op your attitude is odd. Nobody is asking for any sympathy.
If you aren't 100% ethical in all areas, why do you think it's appropriate to lecture people?

kingscrossnoodle · 08/04/2017 16:43

I love how everyone is so knowledgable and concerned about horse racing ONE day a year.

Not give a shit about yesterday's horses? Or tomorrow's?

Arsenicinthesugarbowl · 08/04/2017 16:43

YANBU to feel passionately about the subject. But it's up to people what they choose to do within the boundaries of the law. Eat meat, choose veganism, bomb other countries, don't get involved, ban refugees, welcome refugees, support horse racing, ban it, watch porn, ban it, vote UKIP etc etc. I certainly value both sides of an argument as there's always something to learn but depends a great deal on how it's presented. Your initial post was reasonable but telling people they are amoral and raising children to be such means you appear goady rather than passionate! However blanket statements about vegans are also uncalled for and don't apply to all. But if you post in AIBU it's a blood sport itself at times!

JacquesHammer · 08/04/2017 16:43

I would have had more time for this thread had you actually said "AIBU to ask you not to bet on horse racing"

The Grand National causes the same hysteria every year - yet never hear a peep from people regarding the countless other race meets during the year.

Verticalvenetianblinds · 08/04/2017 16:43

If the horses didn't enjoy it, they wouldn't do it. Just saying. But good luck trying to persuade 600kg of horse.

OP posts:
EatSpamAmandaLamb · 08/04/2017 16:44

Well exactly you can't be 100% ethically consistent so why come on lecturing people who, as far as the op might know, could well be at Swampy levels of environmental campaigning and lentil eating.

If you only read about horse racing from one style of source then you don't know the full picture. Off to the pub.
And when I go to France next week I'll enjoy eating horse. Wink

Mummyoflittledragon · 08/04/2017 16:44

Ok I don't bet on it. But what is it with the vegan preaching threads today??

hhorvath · 08/04/2017 16:45

Vertical why do they have to be whipped if they love it so much?
