Please think about what you're condoning.

www.independent.co.uk/voices/grand-national-races-animal-cruelty-get-rid-of-dangerous-jump-a7672131.html

"It’s time for the Grand National again – that curious time of year when people who claim to like horses gather to exploit them, often hurting and killing them in the process.

Since 2000, 48 horses have died at the annual festival that the National is part of. Others have suffered horribly with broken backs, necks or legs, severed tendons, or heart attacks. This is the reality of British horse racing."

If you use this as entertainment, the blood of murdered horses is on your hands as well.

Would you bet on a race where human beings fell and broke their legs or necks and had to be shot? At least they would have consented. Horses cannot consent to this life.

Would you be "fine" with it as long as it hadn't happened since 2012, despite horses dying after the race from their injuries since then?

Please don't be dazzled by the so-called glamour of this bloodsport.

How about angling? Should that be banned?

How about keeping a pet dog in a house and walking it round with a collar and lead? Should that be banned?

How about keeping fish or hamsters in tanks of water? Should that be banned?

How about punching ducks? Should that be banned?

How about poisoning head lice? Should that be banned?

HerOtherHalf · 08/04/2017 17:07

If they were self-righteous, judgy vegans, absolutely. In fact, I think thst has such mass market appeal I might take it to Dragon's Den.

JacquesHammer · 08/04/2017 17:07

hhorvath - do you ever think you'd get more interest if you were quite so bombastic and patronising.

I'm interested in what you have to say. However you're totally losing me with the way you express yourself.

hhorvath · 08/04/2017 17:07

You care so much about animal welfare to post an uneducated thread but you don't care about the people your going to render unemployed coz you want to shut the industry down. Bet you post on benefit threads telling unemployed people they should try harder too.
Oh how nice it must be to live in your pink fluffy world where everyone is perfect and all animals roam free.

What a fucking ridiculous thing to say. How are you extrapolating my view on benefits claimants from this thread? Are you on glue?

Thattimeofyearagain · 08/04/2017 17:07

She can't explain, she has NO knowledge of racing.

BoneyBackJefferson · 08/04/2017 17:08

hhorvath

I really don't give a shit about the employees who choose to work in this highly privileged area. They'll be fine.

Other than your attitude this is the only bit that I really disagree with.
Most of those that work with horses are not privileged

hhorvath · 08/04/2017 17:08

A thread full of people calling me a cunt, a preachy vegan etc. etc. and people have the gall to say "um, I don't like the way you express yourself".

Wow the knit your own sandals brigade is out in force here today.

OP feel free to bring stuff like this up, however from that point people are free to choose how they will live based on the information provided. No one can force people to change.

We choose to eat our meat ethically and sustainability. But wouldn't force that on anyone

Thattimeofyearagain · 08/04/2017 17:08

Sorry , got to go now to watch the big race.

hhorvath · 08/04/2017 17:09

I used to be vegan. It's preachy people like you who give vegans a bad name.

Why do you care if you're not even a vegan?

OP posts:
TicTacToe12 · 08/04/2017 17:09

@DingDongtheWitchIsDangDiddlyDe Why do people get all het up about the grand national? There is horse racing every other day of the year, why do you only care about it when its a well known race?

For the same reason this sort of person becomes a whiney vegan - attention seeking.

No-one is going to do anything other than laugh when they call for the local drag hunt or gymkhana to be cancelled so they moan about the high-profile stuff instead and then whine SOME MORE when it is pointed out to them that no-one likes being preached to.

hhorvath · 08/04/2017 17:09

Ah of course. People make ethical choices for attention, not for the sake of being ethical. That must be it.

I had a genuine question (thank you to the poster who answered) but the OP's antagonist attitude has shown me this is just a thread to have a go at people.

I've never noticed any other threads about other races, so yes, I was looking for a rational answer of 'The Grand National is crueler because x y z many horses die or are injured'. Something in that vein.

What's the point in spluttering bile about it if you're not going to actively engage with people whose minds you might be able to change? I was willing to listen to you.

Verticalvenetianblinds · 08/04/2017 17:10

So tell me op, without resorting to insults, how would you like the world to be. What is your idea of 'Correct' or good way of life. Honestly I'm curious, not even Biscuit!

PollytheDolly · 08/04/2017 17:10

And how do you view hunting?

Have you actually read half the comments on this thread that a) called me a cunt b) called me a preachy vegan and made insulting comments about vegans c) patronising talking-over-my-head ?

gammaraystar · 08/04/2017 17:11

Yawn. We bet every year. Won quite a few times. We eat meat, wear leather... don't see the differece. Why won't vegans just stfu. Worse than Jeovahs Witnesses these days!

Verticalvenetianblinds · 08/04/2017 17:11

I hunt. That is my choice as a grown up.

Runny · 08/04/2017 17:11

Yes, they really are treated like Kings. It's a very moneyed sport, full of very wealthy people and it's in their best interests to treat the horses well. They have heated stables, swimming pools, access to the best vets money can buy etc.

I also know that the trainers adore their horses. Jockeys are also fined for misuse of the whip.

I'm all for animal rights, but trust me, his idea that racehorses are mistreated is wrong on so many levels.

JacquesHammer · 08/04/2017 17:12

Yes. And none of those were me. I asked you questions about your thoughts on the dismantling of the industry and you were patronising and rude.

So sorry OP. Interesting cause for sure and one I hadn't really stopped to think about. But I can't chat about it with people as dismissive as you

LuxCoDespondent · 08/04/2017 17:12

I've put bets on, I don't see anything cruel whatsoever about the Grand National or equine sports in general. A horse which doesn't want to race cannot be forced to race - a refusal to race is quite regular at lower levels.

I think "sports" like fishing are much crueler. Horse-racing and show-jumping only involve animals doing what they are naturally able to do: running, jumping. Horses occasionally die doing these things, no doubt a horse or two will die in the Grand National in the next ten minutes or so. Hopefully not, but that's the way it goes.

But anyway, I've got my bets on and no doubt will see my money go down the drain at the first couple of fences Wink.

BonnyScotland · 08/04/2017 17:13

my beautiful Horse is... DEFINITELY RED.... no: 17

Yahooooooooooooooo x

hhorvath · 08/04/2017 17:13

Yes. And none of those were me. I asked you questions about your thoughts on the dismantling of the industry and you were patronising and rude.

And it came off as quite disingenuous. Shutting down the asylums was complicated and expensive. Shutting work camps is a major project. It doesn't mean we don't even address it because it seems a bit hard.

BeeFarseer · 08/04/2017 17:13

You're never going to win anyone over if you carry on being antagonist. HTH.

That's such a chilling thing to read. That an actual adult would be that dismissive of something being killed.
