WIBU to buy a £600 pegasus handbag?

I've discovered this gorgeous handbag. It's the perfect colour and size and the print suits my personality to a tee. It is however £600 so I can't bring myself to buy it. I have all these visions of getting rid of all my other handbags and carrying this one forever. Would I be completely unreasonable to splash out on this bag?

Financial background: we have 1 kid, husband is the main earner at 21,000, mortgage is £500/month, I have small part time job where I make £500 a month, savings about £40,000 from inheritance. But I have no pension fund.

I have a feeling no matter how much money we make it's still unreasonable to buy a £600 handbag with a mythical creature on it however!

If you can afford it but it. If you can't don't. Simple.
No one can tell you your own financial situation or how much happinesses it would bring you

I don't like bags though so i wouldn't but for something comparable to me that I liked i would

If you have money from inheritance and it's your inheritance I would. Maybe give DH the same as 'play' money. Otherwise say you won't have xmas/birthday gifts this year in lieu of Ths bag.

I should add I'm not normally a bag person either, and have never spent over £40 on one! I carry the same ones for ages bc I can't be bothered to change them over. So the goal of one bag is probably achievable.

It's your choice to make but I'm not sure I could spend more than my monthly mortgage payment on a bag.

This particular bag isn't doing it for me and I don't think looks like it costs £600.

It seems a bonkers idea to me but it's your money! Just ask yourself is it worth working over a month to pay for?

I bought a £500 handbag that I had wanted for ages with some of my parents inheritance. It is a lot of money but it felt like a huge treat to myself after a very crappy period in my life (miscarriage and then my last parent dying and having to leave my young child while sorting things out abroad). Never regretted it.

I was given a mulberry bayswater for my 21st birthday and used it pretty much daily for about 7 years before I decided it was looking too tired. Stopped me buying a £20-40 one every few months. I've just replaced it with a newer version though they would have refurbished the old one for me if I'd wanted. (Cost almost 5x my mortgage payments l but I'm lucky my mortgage is small!)
It's not to my personal taste but if you love it and can afford it I'd go for it.
Have you always loved these kind of prints and always will? Personally I wouldn't spend this much on a bag that's fashionable rather than classic but if it suits your personality and will do for years that is what matters!
Have you seen it in real life? Aspinal bags are generally lovely quality and they're very good at customer service. I took a purse in which I'd had for years to ask if they could have the zip replaced and they just gave me a brand new one for free.

If you're going to spend £600 on a bag there's loads of nicer ones! That looks a bit like a market job..
I think it's a crazy amount to spend on a bag but if you're going to, at least get a really nice one!

I have to be honest here and say I think you'd be crazy to spend such a large amount on a bag. If I had that amount of savings I would be planning for my DC future like university fees (£40k will cover course fees only!) or helping DC get on the housing ladder. My DC is only 2 and we have started an account for each already so we have that money to give.

If I spent £600 on anything I would feel awful forever knowing I'd spent over the months mortgage (ours is also less than £600) and over my wages on a bag! I'd literally lose sleep over it. That £600 could go towards a weeks holiday for all three of you (the three of us are off to Greece for a week in June at a complete cost of £368 plus topcashback!) and I'd much rather that.

Maybe the issue here for me though is I don't like the bag. I think if someone I knew bought it and said it was £600 I'd call them a mug and say they had been ripped off. I'd want an ACTUAL Pegasus for that money!

I was in a similar situation, except my quandary was over whether to buy a puppy (purchase cost was 4 figures)

My husband's advice was this : you have inheritance, use that to buy the puppy as a gift from the person that left you the money, you will never be able to justify the cost from the normal household pot.

I think the same applies here, if you love the bag that much you should buy it as a gift from the deceased and think of them every time you use it.

£600 on a bag is excessive from the household budget if your mortgage is £500, but as an inheritance gift? Totally ok

If you really love it and you rarely splash out on yourself, buy it with your inheritance money, and think of it as a last gift from who you inherited from. Then give your husband the same amount to spend as he wishes. If you end up feeling too guilty, pay back your inheritance fund £50 per month or something like that :)

If you love it buy it. It is very distinctive do you think you would still love it in 5 years time? I see nothing wrong with buying something just for you.

Leaving personal taste aside - even if you love it, it's not like you can just buy that bag and that's you forever it'll last a few years, partic if you use it all the time as your only bag. But if you'd still be happy to get say 7/8 years worth out of it and there's nothing (item or experience) you'd rather spend £600 on as a treat from inheritance then why not. Nb then post lovely bag start thinking about income and pension

I thought about the holiday thing too. I do want to go to Austria for the weekend with the family which would end up costing about the same probably. I would feel guilty spending this money on a "thing" rather than an experience.

As for the design, there's no acounting for taste :D

I do wonder if it might go on sale or to outlet eventually however.

Well I had a similar dilemma a few months ago.

My DH said I could afford it; it's a shame not to use money to enjoy it; it's not going to put you into debt - so what are you waiting for?

I took his advice and have no regrets - only pleasure from acquiring this item. So if you have £40k inheritance money, it's your money - go and get your lovely handbag :)

If it's something you really want, and can afford, I don't see the issue. Everyone deserves an extravagant treat & you obviously love it!

What I do before any big purchases is imagine it with what I already have, so in your case every morning for a week I would look at what I'm wearing and think, would the bag go with this?
