to have just realised how amazing Emma Thompson is?

We watched Beauty and the Beast and I told my husband, "you know, out of everyone there, you'd really think Emma Thompson is Mrs Potts".

Then I realised every role she's ever been, she gets lost in it. She becomes the character.

That's rare.

Does anyone remember Thompson her short lived sketch show? That was pretty, ghastly luvvie with Kenneth Branagh in too. Can't quite ever forget that although thought she was great as Elinor Dashwood and Margaret Schlegel in Howard's End.

I'm not keen. She doesn't really play a massive range does she?

She does good emotionally repressed middle class people. And, er, the odd kids film. That's it really.

I loved her in Sense and Sensibility. She can be a bit self righteous but I'll forgive her because of her Scottish side.

toomuchtooold · 06/04/2017 06:35

I like her. I liked her since Tutti Frutti in the early 90s, when she nailed the Kelvinside Glasgow accent so well that I can only imagine her mother was either squirming or killing herself laughing.

EccentricPickle · 06/04/2017 06:42

I love Emma Thompson too.

She isn't married to Kenneth Branagh and hasn't been since 1995. She's married to Greg Wise.

I thought her accent was fine in Beauty and The Beast but I loved the film so much so maybe it passed me by. Grin

I think it took me 4 viewings of harry potter before i twigged she was professor trelawly.

Does anyone remember her in the tall guy?

And the reincarnation film with kenneth brannagh?

redexpat · 06/04/2017 06:47

BillSykes I disagree although i can see why you would say that. She was in much ado about nothing. And Peters Friends.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 06/04/2017 07:13

As an actress she is good I wouldn't say great

I find her pretentious and irritating she has toned it down as there was a time she was mocked for being so

BillSykesDog · 06/04/2017 07:23

Yes, and she played Beatrice in MAAN as an middle class girl repressing her love behind wit. And in Peter's friends she plays, er, a middle class girl trying to storm being emotionally repressed....

RedBullBlood · 06/04/2017 07:27

Love her. I watch Nanny McPhee when I'm on my own so I can have a cry over it. Dc are too old for the film now and dh would rather cut his own throat that watch it. The sequel was awful, though!

redexpat · 06/04/2017 08:32

I wouldnt have put it quite like that but okay

VeryButchyRestingFace · 06/04/2017 08:38

And in The Legend of Barney Thomson she plays a murderous old Weegie scrubber who channels her working class repression into a series of brutal dismemberments of her "clients" whilst trying to keep her milagned wee laddie away from the long arm of the law.

CoraPirbright · 06/04/2017 08:44

Utterly adore her generally (love actually - omg - "...but you have made the life I lead ridiculous too". Sob!)

However, I was unsure about her as Mrs Potts - felt it was lacking in the tremendous warmth that Angela Lansbury brought to the role.
