To think that my dog is not 'just a dog'?

WilburIsSomePig · 05/04/2017 19:30

Well of course he's 'just a dog' because he's, well, a dog.

BUT he's a massive, huge part of my and DH's life and of my DC's lives. He's the first member of the household that DS (who is a different boy since we got him) talks to in the morning and last he talks to at night. He cheers me up just by looking at me and wagging his tail. DH suffers from insomnia and frequently wanders downstairs during the night and I'll find the dog cuddled up to him on the sofa (he's not allowed on the furniture btw Smile. DD sits and chats to him when she comes home from school in a bad mood for whatever reason 10 year olds get in a bad mood about. I love everything about him, we all do.

And now we find he has a huge tumour and things are looking very bleak. I can't even tell you how devastated we all are and MIL tells DS not to be silly as 'it's just a dog and you can get another one'.

I know not everyone likes pets, or dogs but he's ours and we love him. I don't suppose this is really a BU thread, I just wanted to tell someone else.

I'm so sorry. We lost both of ours a few years ago and still get upset. We all want another but can't face the heartache again.

Oh Wilbur love, I'm so very very sorry.

He had a life surrounded by so much love, he really was the luckiest hound, and at the end, you were all there, so he wasn't scared or in pain the end, you made sure of that.

My sincere condolences Flowers

I am so sorry to hear your news this morning. Flowers For you and your family.

MarlboroughMillie · 06/04/2017 09:24

I am so so sorry. Our furry friend of 14 years had to be pts on Sunday, and I cannot believe the grief we all feel. There is a big hole in our lives that only she could fill and we miss her every minute.
Try to take comfort in the loving, happy life you gave him, and knowing that you did what you knew was best for him. If we could chose how we went, wouldn't we all want to go peacefully surrounded by those who love us most?
Even just a few days on we can now think of our Pip with more smiles than tears. In time we may choose to share our lives with another dog, but that will never erase the special place in your hearts for this one.
Sending hugs x

wilbur he would have sensed you were all there with him, all his humans, and that would have made the end so much easier for him. Poor boy. Never, never 'just a dog'. Flowers

purplecoathanger · 06/04/2017 09:41

So very sorry, I'm crying with you Sad. He was a very special dog, that's obvious. You held his paw when he needed you and you and your family are lovely people. xxx

Your doggie was so lucky to have such a wonderful family to look after him. He's had a marvellous life and now he's at peace.

Some time soon you will be able to look back on the wonderful times you shared together and you'll celebrate his life.

Massive hugs xxx

I'm so, so sorry to see this.

You've probably seen this before but I'm going to leave it here just in case. It always brings me a lot of comfort.

"Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigour. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together...."

If I were you i would scan the thread for cute doggy pictures, but not read any posts. It all went a bit haywire and honestly you don't need to read some of the shit.

So sorry, your last post has me in tears. Your dog sounded so wonderful, but he died surrounded by people he loved and who loved him. Flowers

SillyLittleBiscuit · 06/04/2017 10:52

Lots of love to you all Wilbur. Losing a much loved dog was the hardest thing I ever went through - but I'm so grateful for my memories of him.

starsorwater · 06/04/2017 11:03

elQuinto my very elderly familyless friend took such comfort when she was dying thinking of the dog she had lost forty years earlier. She was sure he was in heaven and that she would see him again. I will never forget the light on her face when she said, 'Won't Dinky come running!'
I always hope Dinky did

starsorwater · 06/04/2017 11:11

Wilbur so sorry, know how much it hurts.

yellowfrog · 06/04/2017 11:19

Oh Wilbur I am so so sorry for you and your family Flowers

He was not "just" a dog - he was a family member who will stay in your hearts for ever. Anyone who tell you different, especially right now, is an insensitive arse. I would suggest preempting MIL by telling her not to say anything like she said to your kids as it won't help and is just cruel. I'm furious that she would say that to your son in the first place - who does that?!

Big hugs
