To think that my dog is not 'just a dog'?

Well of course he's 'just a dog' because he's, well, a dog.

BUT he's a massive, huge part of my and DH's life and of my DC's lives. He's the first member of the household that DS (who is a different boy since we got him) talks to in the morning and last he talks to at night. He cheers me up just by looking at me and wagging his tail. DH suffers from insomnia and frequently wanders downstairs during the night and I'll find the dog cuddled up to him on the sofa (he's not allowed on the furniture btw Smile. DD sits and chats to him when she comes home from school in a bad mood for whatever reason 10 year olds get in a bad mood about. I love everything about him, we all do.

And now we find he has a huge tumour and things are looking very bleak. I can't even tell you how devastated we all are and MIL tells DS not to be silly as 'it's just a dog and you can get another one'.

I know not everyone likes pets, or dogs but he's ours and we love him. I don't suppose this is really a BU thread, I just wanted to tell someone else.

chanceofrain · 06/04/2017 11:32

stars you have finished me off with Dinky.

OP I am so, so sorry for your loss. You sound like such a lovely family and I'm so glad your dd got to give your ddog the teddy in the end Smile. We have a similar rivalry in our house over dd's favourite cuddly which often is found in ddog's bed, or being carried around gently, retriever style, even though ddog is a terrier. I was really moved to tears by what your dd did to comfort her pal when he needed comfort. Such a lovely gesture and one that he could understand.

You gave him a beautiful life full of love, and even a death full of love too. I hope that you are comforted by that knowledge when the intensity of grief subsides (and it will).

Crying at OPs update. I am so sorry for your loss.

I am not sure I can bear to read past her update in the event that those two horrible posters still haven't cleared off yet. Insensitive doesn't even cover it.

FleshEmoji · 06/04/2017 12:07

Why are dogs even considered to be "just dogs"? Is it because their IQ is well below 100? Is it because they can't speak?

Well, if so then why isn't the same logic applied to humans who are of low IQ and dumb, then?

I've loved my dogs far more than many humans, even members of my own family. I don't apologise for it. It took me almost 10 years to get another dog after my last two died young, and the grief I felt was worse than any I've felt for a human who died after their four score years.

Flowers for Wilbur and Millie. Our stripy tyrant (a small but very wilful cat) died not so long ago; when they go, it wounds your heart, but hopefully the happy memories will always be with you.

stars, that's so sad but beautiful, I hope your friend was reunited with Dinky, too.

I'm so sorry to hear your update. It's had me in tears.

Your family gave your boy a wonderful life and you were all there for him so that he was loved and comforted at the end. You sound like a lovely family and he was a lucky dog to have had you as his pack.

So sorry, Wilbur. Crying with you, and all the other dog-lovers on here who can empathise. We feel your pain. You gave him the kindest of endings, a wonderful gift.

I'm so so sorry Wilbur. My pup is just over 6 months old. I already know she will break my heart. They aren't just a dog. They are loyal and constant companions. Family members and precious with it.
