Pronounced cal-y-oh-pee

Is it awful?

❤️ Calla

falange · 06/04/2017 20:19

Isn't it the name of a warship?

Persephone70 · 06/04/2017 20:26

TBH, a name will get flogged whatever it is - too common, too outlandish, too new age, too boring, too old, too dated etc.... I love it, but what else would a Persephone say?! 😉

WellIGuessThisIsGrowingUp · 06/04/2017 20:49

I know a little girl with that name! And she is known as "Callie" and its a beautiful name x

pollymere · 06/04/2017 21:22

I think it's up to you. Kids at school will pick it up fine and she can be known as Cally if she wishes.

Keepthebloodynoisedown · 06/04/2017 21:37

I was arguing with my dp about this last night! I absolutely love the name, it's different but classic, and shortens easily to something easy to pronounce/ spell

gemma19846 · 06/04/2017 21:47

Sounds like some kind of deer or gazelle

glueandstick · 06/04/2017 21:49

I love it. But my daughter has a Classical Greek name so I am biased I suppose

user1471537898 · 06/04/2017 23:10

My childhood cat was called Calliope so I think it's a great name!

CountessWindyBottom · 06/04/2017 23:25

If I met someone with this name I'd assume it had been done out of spite.

YesThisIsMe · 06/04/2017 23:40

Really countess? Knowing that this is a legitimate name and some posters on this thread have given it to their child. Rather than assume that they were Grey's Anatomy fans, or keen lovers of Ancient Greek myth, or actually Greek, or a bit pretentious, you'd assume that they had a pathological need to make their newborn baby suffer? I'd say that's a bit of a stretch.

Darlink · 06/04/2017 23:41

Sounds like an exotic vegetable

TheDowagerCuntess · 07/04/2017 01:07

If I met someone with this name I'd assume it had been done out of spite.

The name's not one that would make my list but this ^^ would make me assume you'd had a rather sheltered upbringing.

GreatFuckability · 07/04/2017 01:52

My children have Welsh names that they often have to spell/explain to people outside of Wales. it's no drama, and not the big deal people seem to think it is.
i like Calliope. Also a huge fan of Callie from grey's!

creepymumweirdo · 07/04/2017 06:51

At the risk of sounding like a massive twat...

I've never understood the pronunciation of Calliope as Cal-ee-OPE-ee.

It is Greek. As in Antigone and Persephone.

So surely it should be pronounced Cal-LIE-ope-ee?

PersePHONEee doesn't have the same ring to it either.

Booboo66 · 07/04/2017 06:52

I wanted a name that could shorten to calli/kali but couldn't get used to calliope .. I preferred callia/Kalia or Callista. In the end I was torn between 2 names so tossed a coin and calli lost, still sad about that sometimes. Calliope is fine though and I know both how to pronounce and spell it. I doubt people would have too much trouble.

ImSexyAndIKnowIt · 07/04/2017 06:53

I think it's lovely and a nice change from the same old names that get used time and time again. I know about 8 Olivers, Lilys, Lily-Mays among others.
DB and DSIL have just had a girl and have gone for a name I've never personally known anyone called and hopefully she'll be the only known in her school with the name and not another Lily B, Lily S as all the Lilys I know are. Not picking on the Lilys out there- just an example!!

TheDowagerCuntess · 07/04/2017 08:18

Creepy - a few of us have said the same thing upthread!

Cally-oh-pee sounds mangled to me.

TheDowagerCuntess · 07/04/2017 08:21

Antigone
Persephone
Penelope
Calliope

All, to me, have the stress on the second syllable.

MaidOfStars · 07/04/2017 08:34

Antigone is lovely!

creepymumweirdo · 07/04/2017 08:49

Glad it's not just me!

Antigone is pretty but I don't know if I could bring myself to make anyone her namesake. She was't a happy Bunny.

Though she was pretty bad ass, in a stubborn, suicidey kind of way.

glueandstick · 07/04/2017 09:00

Antigone had 2 brothers and a sister so it's always an option to choose a sibling.

glueandstick · 07/04/2017 09:00

She wasn't happy but she was a moral person.

Lovelymess · 07/04/2017 11:06

Mmm not my cup of tea lol but it's your baby and your going to be saying that name a million times over your lifetime lol so pick one you love!! X

Batgirlspants · 07/04/2017 11:09

Personally I would judge you as attention seeking op and I think it's bloody awful you did ask!

However you call her what you like and it's no one else's business until you ask their opinion. Wink
