Is it awful?

What are your thoughts now, OP? I don't think she's posted since the OP.

dowhatnow · 06/04/2017 18:00

I think of leg braces- sorry.

RaqsMax · 06/04/2017 18:25

BEAUTIFUL , classical name! Much better than generic, 'popular' names where you have 3 or 4 kids in the same class with the same name.

Callie is a nice abbreviation, too.

DagenhamRoundhouse · 06/04/2017 18:28

From Wikipeida:
++++++++++++++
A calliope is a musical instrument that produces sound by sending a gas, originally steam or more recently compressed air, through large whistles—originally locomotive whistles.

A calliope is typically very loud. Even some small calliopes are audible for miles. There is no way to vary tone or loudness. Musically, the only expression possible is the pitch, rhythm, and duration of the notes.

Sorry, think it's a terrible name!

Notanotherpawpatrol · 06/04/2017 18:31

Well my dd2 is called Calliope, and her nn is Callie. Most people cope just fine with the pronounceation and spelling. There are a few that assume she's Kelly instead of Callie, but then that could happen with any name. Op if you like it, go for it :)

Notanotherpawpatrol · 06/04/2017 18:32

Dagenham, Calliope is also Greek for beautiful or beautiful song ;)

heron98 · 06/04/2017 18:36

Only on MN.

It's weird and hideous.

Don't do it to the poor child.

Notanotherpawpatrol · 06/04/2017 18:38

I'm laughing at some of the pearl clutching going on here! "Weird and hidious" really?!

Notanotherpawpatrol · 06/04/2017 18:39

It's also a very common name in America so hardly weird.

TesticleMeElmo · 06/04/2017 18:39

I LOVE this name so much!! I wanted to use for a middle name for DD, but OH said no Angry

Winemamma · 06/04/2017 18:46

Hate it sorry!

ActuallyThatsSUPREMECommander · 06/04/2017 18:54

I wouldn't class it as very common in the US - it's number 800 in the charts, but it's certainly on the up.

Love it! Huge GA fan too!

Love the fact she was a muse and the meaning is beautiful too.

QueenofPentacles · 06/04/2017 19:10

I don't like it but it is up to you, Sounds like something from Brideshead Revisited.

DoItTooJulia · 06/04/2017 19:10

Oh and just spotted your username-you're a fan too! Better than Meredith! (Merre?? Merre? Now that's a shit shortening!)

kurlique · 06/04/2017 19:13

We have Classical Greek girls names in our family... they are lovely but do get mispronounced, even the four letter one! If you like it go for it... better an unusual yet real name than being the umpteenth Emily/Sarah/Karen/Janet (depending on your era!) in your class/office or having a made up name IMHOGrin

Mommawoo · 06/04/2017 19:14

Dp is Greek and has two friends with that name. Both shorten it to Poppy.

Aeroflotgirl · 06/04/2017 19:16

No just no. Sounds like caterpillar, or cantaloupe as in cantaloupe melon.

JeNeBaguetteRien · 06/04/2017 19:20

I just thought of eating a Calippo on a hot day or giving a kid Calpol when they're ill.
Come on Calliope take your Calpol and then you can have a Calippo for your sore throat.
I'm not a fan.

Huskylover1 · 06/04/2017 19:26

Makes me think of calipers. You don't see them any more, they were metal supports for leg disabilities.

Don't like it, sorry.

car5ys · 06/04/2017 19:29

As long as she can live with it being pronounced incorrectly, spelt incorrectly, find nothing with her name on (keyrings/mugs/xmas decs etc) and have everyone say "pardon can you spell that please" for the rest of her life it's lovely. (yes I have a 20 year old with an "unusual" name and these things bug her)

summerholsdreamin · 06/04/2017 19:54

Mythical Greek?

Deidre21 · 06/04/2017 19:57

Why not, if you really like it then use that name. If you really care what others think then, I don't know, I try my best not to be put off by what others think. It's your baby after all. You could have the name as a second name.

Lovingit81 · 06/04/2017 20:01

Love it! Can't stand boring names! If you love it, go for it. There will always be plenty of people that hate it, who cares. If I have to listen to one more person call their kid Charlotte I'll scream Grin

tinpanali00 · 06/04/2017 20:07

I like it, and I love Cally. My daughter has a Greek name and it used to annoy her because no one knew how to pronounce it or spell it. She wanted to change her name to Ginger Grin. She likes it now though.
