To be a little disconcerted (MIL related)

So, MIL comes round to help look after DD and we're all having a lovely time laughing and giggling and drinking tea. Next thing, DH gets out my gluten free Hobnobs (don't mess with mummy's Hobnobs 😂) and I say "who's eating my Hobnobs" and DD shouts "me!" with delight - we all laugh (all very silly and tongue in cheek).

Then DH says:
"Mum, would you like one?"
And I say:
"She wouldn't dare after that!" (Haha! Again all very tongue in cheek)
To which she replies:
"Oh I would" (dead serious)
Then looks me in the eye and says it again:
"Oh, I would"... (awkward silence)

Gulp

Confused
MrsExpo · 04/04/2017 13:09

Get a grip. This is a biscuit we're talking about. What's the issue?

wizzywig · 04/04/2017 13:10

They are expensive. Put down the hobnob mil and back away

alltouchedout · 04/04/2017 13:11

Lick one and offer it to her.

Inertia · 04/04/2017 13:11

Why can't DH offer round the gluten-filled biscuits and leave the gluten free biscuits for people who need to eat gluten free? Or are the gluten free Hobnobs the only biscuits in the house?

floraeasy · 04/04/2017 13:12

"Oh I would" (dead serious)

Or dead pan?

hamandmustard · 04/04/2017 13:12

Sorry- I don't understand what you are trying to say?

WasabiNell · 04/04/2017 13:13

I think OP was just joking but MIL got weirdly serious over it? If I'm reading it correctly?

Glutenfreediddleydee · 04/04/2017 13:14

MrsExpo exactly! Yikes, what a way to kill the lighthearted biscuit banter.

The message was very clear... don't mess!

Does your MIL know they are special gluten-free ones? She might be thinking they are normal biscuits and you are being ridiculously precious over them.

And if you have to have special biscuits what was your DH thinking by bringing them out? Why didn't he bring out the normal ones to offer round?

53rdAndBird · 04/04/2017 13:17

Lick one and offer it to her.

yy do this.

Glutenfreediddleydee · 04/04/2017 13:17

No, I'm not precious over the biscuits! It was all said in jest and banter.

Wasabi is right, I just mean the weirdly serious "oh I would (dare)" comment (yikes!)

Can almost hear the theme tune to Jaws!

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 04/04/2017 13:20

This is when you grab a fork and aim it at her hand if she comes near the hobnobs.

SheSaidHeSaid · 04/04/2017 13:20

What wasabi said.

MIL got serious/weird pretty quickly!

floraeasy · 04/04/2017 13:25

Seems you thought you guys were just Hobnobbing, then MIL got you by the Jaffas, now you need to play Kit-for-Kat, and ask her to play Nice, or you'll Club her over the head with a packet of biscuits until she's walking like a Penguin. Give her the Lady Finger and send her on her way...!

Must stop now. I'm cream-crackered!

Glutenfreediddleydee · 04/04/2017 13:27

Floraeasy Bour-bon!

floraeasy · 04/04/2017 13:29

LOL!

JonesyAndTheSalad · 04/04/2017 13:36

I don't know. If there's "banter" along the lines of "Who is eating Mummy's biscuits" then there IS or HAS been an issue with them.

I think it sounds quite rude of you to say "She wouldn't dare after that" anyway.

That's not banter or funny.

To say "she wouldn;t dare" after all that was said was "Whose eating my hobnobs" "I am"

Seems odd and weirdly worded.

MusicToMyEars800 · 04/04/2017 13:37

flora very nice verbal work there Grin loving those biscuit puns

floraeasy · 04/04/2017 13:40

Thanks, that's MusicToMyEars Grin

Love corny jokes and puns.

Glutenfreediddleydee · 04/04/2017 13:43

Jonesy now imagine the phrase "whose been eating my Hobnobs" in the tone of Daddy Bear from Goldilocks (i.e. "Who's been sleeping in myyyyyyy bed?!") a bit of an ongoing joke in our house. All banter I can assure you!

Marking my place to watch how some posters will manage to find a way to roast the OP even when it's clear that MIL was being weird.

She escalated that fast, didn't she?

What's your relationship like generally?
