To be a little disconcerted (MIL related)

So, MIL comes round to help look after DD and we're all having a lovely time laughing and giggling and drinking tea. Next thing, DH gets out my gluten free Hobnobs (don't mess with mummy's Hobnobs 😂) and I say "who's eating my Hobnobs" and DD shouts "me!" with delight - we all laugh (all very silly and tongue in cheek).

Then DH says:
"Mum, would you like one?"
And I say:
"She wouldn't dare after that!" (Haha! Again all very tongue in cheek)
To which she replies:
"Oh I would" (dead serious)
Then looks me in the eye and says it again:
"Oh, I would"... (awkward silence)

Gulp

No, I'm not precious over the biscuits! It was all said in jest and banter.

OP I wasn't trying to say I thought you were precious, I was just looking to understand how MIL might have misunderstood the situation.

I got the impression that these must be your "special" biscuits because you mentioned they were gluten-free so assumed you couldn't tolerate other biscuits. Hence, it would be quite understandable for you to have your own special stash that the rest of the family left alone.

However, your MIL might not have been aware of that and not picked up on the banter aspect.

My DM gets arsey when we have banter. Since she's turned 65 she has seriously lost her sense of humor. Your MIL was being weird.

Mmm. I like gluten free hob nobs with coconut yogurt, strawberries and a wee drizzle of golden syrup, as a quick dessert. It's like a strawberry tart.

Made some lovely rocky roads with 'em at Xmas too, with cranberries and crystallized ginger instead of glacé cherries.

So now I am worried that my MIL might take an interest in my gluten free hobnobs.

Mind you, my MIL is more partial to a Jaffa cake. I got her some Jaffa tea cakes (cross between a Jaffa cake and a Tunnock's teacake). They've been sitting in the boot of the car for ages. I will deploy them as a distraction technique, now that I am alert to the issue.

Wasn't she just being deadpan and carrying on the joke?

Glutenfreediddleydee · 04/04/2017 18:00

Silva it was definitely more of a threat-type tone and prompted a really awkward silence in the room Confused

It's like 6 hobnobs for £2.50 or something like that isn't it. I occassionally get them as a treat for coeliac MIL. She would fight someone if they dared deprive her of one Grin
