AIBU to ask is there proof of Angels?

I saw the lady on This Morning who believes with out doubt in Angels and I couldn't get over how serene and calm she was. I was discussing it at school gates this afternoon and one mum said despite the proof of their existence she felt it was gullible to believe.

I'd like to do some more reading and want to ask is there any proof?

To be fair, there is no proof they don't exist, either.

There is still a lot for science to find, IMO.

expatinscotland · 03/04/2017 16:47

Um, no.

cherryberrymum · 03/04/2017 16:47

I think I do believe. I'm just not 100% convinced. I like the idea of it. I guess it comforts me to think I have a guardian Angel. Guess Karl Marx was right.

I am mostly serene and calm. I put it down to a healthy combination of gin, cake, and not giving a shit.

ProseccoBitch · 03/04/2017 16:50

No. It's complete and utter nonsense.

VestalVirgin · 03/04/2017 16:51

I was just about to ask why you questioned the existence of Chancellor Merkel.

But no, I don't think there's any more proof for angels than there's for any god of any pantheon.

MatildaTheCat · 03/04/2017 16:52

They clearly did exist since there are so many portraits painted by the Renaissance artists. I mean, you'd hardly bother to paint the Sistine Chapel with some sort of fakery, surely?

So by my estimation they may have died out around 1650. Or at least become a very endangered species. 😇

Esspee · 03/04/2017 16:52

Cherryberrymum, this is 2017! There is no such thing as Angels. If there was we would have evidence to prove it and we don't.

ThePiglet59 · 03/04/2017 16:54

"...despite the proof of their existence..."

Huh?

SquatBetty · 03/04/2017 16:54

No, obviously

TiggyD · 03/04/2017 16:54

I'm pretty sure angles exist.

TinfoilHattie · 03/04/2017 16:55

No there's no proof. If you believe in them and it gives you comfort then fine, but don't be looking for proof where there isn't any.

Esspee · 03/04/2017 16:55

Countrygirl, Grin

FancyPantsDelacroixTheFirst · 03/04/2017 16:58

I'm joining the chorus (though not heavenly), what proof? Didn't you ask her?

EdmundCleverClogs · 03/04/2017 16:58

No. Just no,

Funnily enough, my partner and I were having a similar discussion last night. He was baffled that some genuinely believe the whole 'shining light, big wings, beautiful man' interpretation of angels. Actually scriptures show them to be a bit terrifying to behold, not at all comforting - hence declaring 'be not afraid' before appearing.

ShiroiKoibito · 03/04/2017 17:01

"despite the proof of their existence " what proof?

Norland · 03/04/2017 17:03

The proof is right here

SisyphusDad · 03/04/2017 17:03

Farandole,

Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman answered that question in 'Good Omens'.

In order to arrive at an answer, the following facts must be taken into consideration:

Firstly, angels simply don’t dance. It’s one of the distinguishing characteristics that marks an angel. They may listen appreciatively to the Music of the Spheres, but they don’t feel the urge to get down and boogie to it. So, none.

At least, nearly none. Aziraphale had learned to gavotte in a discreet gentlemen’s club in Portland Place, in the late 1880s, and while he had initially taken to it like a duck to merchant banking, after a while he had become quite good at it, and was quite put out when, some decades later, the gavotte went out of style for good.

So providing the dance was a gavotte, and providing that he had a suitable partner (also able, for the sake of argument, both to gavotte, and to dance it on the head of a pin), the answer is a straightforward one.

pigsDOfly · 03/04/2017 17:05

I find it hard to believe that in 2017 someone on an internet forum is actually asking about the existence of angels.

EdmundCleverClogs · 03/04/2017 17:06

There is still a lot for science to find, IMO.

True, but I think science is a bit busy looking for important stuff, like cures for diseases. Even if they want to go chasing proof of imaginary creatures, I hope they start with unicorns first, or Nessy, or prove Hogwarts is a real place. Angels really don't bring much to the table....

Eolian · 03/04/2017 17:06

Actually scriptures show them to be a bit terrifying to behold, not at all comforting - hence declaring 'be not afraid' before appearing.

Unsurprising I guess - as usual with religious stuff, people just make up their own version to suit them.

TheElephantofSurprise · 03/04/2017 17:07

Hmm. If there are angels, they wouldn't be anything like popular notions of angels at all. Try the holy books for descriptions of angels. You wouldn't want them around, really. A bit scary.

PollytheDolly · 03/04/2017 17:08

I am mostly serene and calm. I put it down to a healthy combination ofI am mostly serene and calm.

Pahahahaa! Brilliant

pointythings · 03/04/2017 17:10

Of course there is no proof.

And I am as calm and serene as fuck and am a total atheist.

FatherJemimaRacktool · 03/04/2017 17:11

*To be fair, there is no proof they don't exist, either.

Scientists have also so far failed to prove the non-existence of unicorns, pots of gold at the end of rainbows, and the fact that Elvis likes to ride over to Lord Lucan's on Shergar for a cup of tea and a jammy dodger.
