To wonder why Cambridge have a man coxing their women's boat race crew?

Matthew Holland apparently decided to join the women's crew because he thought they had a better chance of beating Oxford than the men.

Obviously he is not rowing - all the power is being provided by the women who are rowing - but is it right that he has taken a place that could have been taken by a female cox?

Orlantina there is an awful lot more to it than that. Rower of 10+ years. The coxes earn their medals same as the rowers do, just in a totally different way. Coxes steer, deliver race plans, hold the crew together, respond to race conditions, make decisions, monitor stroke rate, pick up on disruptions etc.

Even just from watching today, I learned that the smallest wrong move with the steering wires by the cox can cost a team dearly.
