Rewatching Pretty in Pink

I love that film, but the dress is terrible

Interesting that big shoulders were in and the dress designer gave the dress no shoulders!

MollyHopps · 02/04/2017 10:24

Even Molly Ringwald hated that dress. It's an abomination!

I hear you about the original song: the Psychedelic Furs wrote a really gloomy song about men using and discarding a girl. Not what you'd call good uplifting teen movie fodder, but its not like Hollywood ever gave a fuck about consistency or integrity.

I watched it again this morning.

Did American teenagers really dance like that? I remember wondering that wjen i was younger too - really bad dancing.

McCarthy and Spader were both gorgeous. Suspect John Hughes, bring such a massive UK music fan, just wanted to get the title track a bigger audience. (And yes to the 80s rockabilly thing- spent most of Thursday with various Stray Cats tracks going round my head Grin )

Actually - looking at that dress now, it isn't quite as awful as I remembered it, though at the time I looked at it with a kind of [gulp] [SHIT] [what has she done] feeling.

After Hughes was made by the studio to change the ending of PiP, apparently he went straight off to make Some Kind of Wonderful with the original ending Grin

But to be fair, back in the 80's the 50's retro look was not in at all.

I wore a vintage dress to my commencement in '86. Smile
