Rewatching Pretty in Pink

I love that film, but the dress is terrible

I've just realised I've confused PiP with 16 Candles. Was PiP on TV recently? She was my idol as a gawky kid because physically I resembled her and that was not cool. So whole she should have gone with Duckie my gawky self would have been eating up the "cooler" guys she ended up with.

justinhawkinsnavalfluff · 02/04/2017 02:42

Love the fact no one on MN even has to ask what we are talking about...she so should have ended up with Duckie

CurlieSue · 02/04/2017 03:28

I personally disliked the dress but I think the whole point was that she made it into her own style even if it didn't fit it with the 'in crowd' because she was, at that point in the film, so confident in herself and in her own style that she thought 'to hell with what anyone else thinks about how I dress' and at the end of the day all of her rich classmates probably had dresses designed and made by professional dressmakers yet Andy had custom designed her dress herself and therefore had one up over her class mates.

Florene · 02/04/2017 04:34

Never seen it, but...

I can't believe that Duckie turned into the guy from Two and a Half Men.

Yes, the dress was crap. I remember trying to make myself like it when I was a kid watching it for the first time. I thought I was missing something.

Would totally have gone for Blaine still would and I also had have a sneaky crush on Andie's dad.

I've always gone for the older man Blush

thecraftyfox · 02/04/2017 05:43

Can we blame this dress for the cold shoulder top phenomenon?

EsmesBees · 02/04/2017 05:50

But to be fair, back in the 80's the 50's retro look was not in at all. So can see where the customising came in, and it's pretty realistic that she wouldn't do a great job.

Agree about Blaine though.

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 02/04/2017 06:02

I haven't seen it since I was about 18 but I did love the film. However, even in 1986 (?) I thought the dress was horrible. I had very red hair and have NEVER worn pink. So that bit didn't work for me. And as for the neckline....... Great film though.

Why do so many people fancy the James Spade character? He was vile.

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 02/04/2017 06:02

James Spader that should read (bloody autocorrect )

StartledByHisFurryShorts · 02/04/2017 06:03

I guess we all knew what this thread was about immediately.

Oh yes. Grin

It made me so angry that she hacked up that lady's dress without asking permission to do so. Poor woman. She didn't even have Mumsnet to start an "AIBU to think the beloved dress I LENT to someone shouldn't have been cut up?" thread.

StartledByHisFurryShorts · 02/04/2017 06:05

Ohhhhhh... [penny drops]

PreemptiveSalvageEngineer · 02/04/2017 06:07

But to be fair, back in the 80's the 50's retro look was not in at all.

Errm, it was in my circle - Rockabilly was A Thing, and if you've heard of the Stray Cats, it was in a club somewhere near you, as well. Oh, and Grease.

I hated that dress!!! Just a bad mashup and a crime against good fabric.

I heard the same thing about the original ending. Errm, from Andy McCluskey himself Blush - OMD hated that song - knocked it out in a hurry and then had to go on to play it for years afterwards.

I didn't know about Andrew McCarthy's hair! I doubt I'll ever be able to not see it from now on. I used to have such a crush on him. Probably still do. Blush

Henrysmycat · 02/04/2017 06:17

I had the pleasure of meeting AMCarthy in NYC a few years ago he was between wives. Quiet character. Pretty nice fella. Not as good looking as I was expecting him build him in my head in mannequin era I still would of course.

insancerre · 02/04/2017 06:37

I'm pretty sure the song was around before the film and the pretty in pink refers to being naked

daisychain01 · 02/04/2017 07:07

This is what she should have been wearing.

My dream dress, i just don't have enough norkage to pull it off Sad

I watched Breakfast Club with dd a few years ago (she'd have been about 16/17).

Guess which character she thought was the most fanciable? Well, you won't be able to guess because it was fucking Brian.

Not only that but she refused to believe that anyone apart from me could fancy Bender. On account of his nostrils. I had to take it to Facebook.

90% vote for Bender being the most fanciable Breakfast Clubber. And one vote for Andrew.

JonesyAndTheSalad · 02/04/2017 09:32

Bender was EVERYTHING! God. Those baggy pants teamed with the boots...the intensity....the stare.

BRIAN on the other hand!?? She could have at least fancied Emilio's character!

Sparklingbrook · 02/04/2017 09:33

Brian? Shock

Noo Bender all day long.

Can't find the St Elmo's thread biscuit must have been in Chat.

ProfYaffle · 02/04/2017 09:38

Yep, definitely at the time everyone snurked at the irony of the title vs the dress.

Breakfast Club my dc weren't that impressed with it at all Confused

ProfYaffle · 02/04/2017 09:39

I've just remembered, for years I referred to the film by it's full (in my head) title of 'Pretty in Pink (even though she wasn't)'

whippetwoman · 02/04/2017 09:46

I hadn't made the Ducky to Three and a Half Men connection!!

I am Shock Shock Shock

The dress WAS pants though.

Talk of Breakfast Club inspired me to start a thread. Please all jump on.

StartledByHisFurryShorts · 02/04/2017 09:49

I think Breakfast Club had a bit of a resurgence with "the youth" after featuring heavily in Pitch Perfect.

Summerof85 · 02/04/2017 09:53

I loved Pretty in Pink when a teenager, saw it in the cinema when it came out. Watched it again recently and I agree, it was an awful dress, so unflattering! Loved all the Brat Pack films and Andrew McCarthorpe, although he was a wimp in that film Grin. Loved him in Catholic Boys too.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 02/04/2017 09:57

I loved the film but had forgotten the hideous dress.

Now a bit obsessed with James Spader in the blacklist.
