I see that Finland are to be loaned a pair of Pandas?

I don't get the panda love. From what I've read, they are totally finicky eaters - in captivity and the wild - which has been one of the reasons for their low reproduction rates. The bamboo shoots have to "just so" - they create a lot of food waste, dammit. They rarely shag, especially not in captivity, let alone produce baby pandas. For a "charismatic" animal, they score a 2/10 with me. The Chinese loaning them out seems more like sticking your neighbour with your gammy horse or clapped out car (a cost saving/duff asset disposal) than an act of friendship. Koalas are equally lazy, feckless and finicky about their food. Why do we tolerate these dozy bears when earthworms are so much more vital to the planet's survival?

cozietoesie · 07/04/2017 00:39

They do seem like grumpy blighters. Wink It's a mark of esteem to be offered a pair though.

TheClaws · 07/04/2017 00:43

I won't give Breitbart the traffic, but they are reporting (and this is their lead headline verbatim) "Trump Top Adviser Steve Bannon Attends NSC Meeting One Day After Being ‘Removed'".

If so, it doesn't surprise me at all. Bannon is unlikely to cede any power base without a struggle, and I doubt Trump/Kushner would dare threaten it.

TheClaws · 07/04/2017 00:47

I wouldn't want to offered a pair of breeding earthworms as a token of friendship, Cozie. Although, Australia does have giant earthworms the circumference of your arm and two metres long. When they move under the ground, they can be heard quite clearly. Would you like some?

TheClaws · 07/04/2017 00:49

Sorry, I meant to offer that bigly gift to Illegitimate! You'll just have to fight over them Grin

Lweji · 07/04/2017 01:09

I fear that Assad is a .......smaller worry than some you might have.

Yes and no. War in Syria has ruined a huge country and led to millions of refugees in neighbouring countries and Europe.

"In 2016, the United Nations (UN) identified 13.5 million Syrians requiring humanitarian assistance, of which more than 6 million are internally displaced within Syria, and over 4.8 million are refugees outside of Syria.[31] In January 2017, UNHCR counted 4,863,684 registered refugees.[1] Turkey is the largest host country of registered refugees with over 2.7 million Syrian refugees."

On the other hand, militarily, North Korea seems a bigger danger, but will North Korea ever attack anyone? IMO, they are arming themselves to push the UN and US to lift sanctions.

Russia are the constant enemy, but they have long learned to fight their wars with the US/NATO by proxy. The main danger here is if they manage to break up NATO and the EU. This is a real possibility, and a reason why they are interfering with certain elections and referenda.

Then China. China are spreading themselves, but more like an underground forest fungus. They are offering "aid" and buying key companies around the world. They already exert significant influence, and probably will more, but more from a trade and economy perspective.

cozietoesie · 07/04/2017 01:12

I hope that you're right as appropriate, Lweji.

saffronwblue · 07/04/2017 01:12

Hate the sabre-rattling. Trump knows dimly that making war talk and actual war is a good distraction from the increasing falling apart of his inner circle.
I saw on another feed the Finns being quite pleased and proud to be taken seriously by China. Adelaide in South Australia has a pair of pandas. There is one day a year that they might mate and so far they never have. They are cute but their absence of sex life is a bit depressing.

50 Tomahawk missiles launched into Syria per MSNBC.

'Single target' apparently an airfield near Homs?

OP posts:
saffronwblue · 07/04/2017 02:52

Good God.

TheClaws · 07/04/2017 03:17

Oh no. He's done it.

TheClaws · 07/04/2017 03:19

Across apparently, that's the airfield the initial chemical strike was launched from. Apparently.

BarbarianMum · 07/04/2017 03:27

Is it "Oh no"? I don't support full scale military invasion but I imagine it'll give Mr Assad something to reflect on. Maybe he'll decide to stick to killing civilians by conventional means for a bit.

TheClaws · 07/04/2017 03:48

Barbarian, I'm more concerned about what an action like this may lead to. First, he didn't get the approval of Congress to do it, second, he didn't explore other (perhaps more diplomatic) options before deciding on the Tomahawk route. The ME is unstable. You can't go firing missiles into it and not expect a ripple-on effect. That is what worries me.

And...maybe he'll stick to killing civilians by conventional means for a bit?? I'm sorry, Barbarian, but this was a bit off.

AcrossthePond55 · 07/04/2017 05:16

Exactly Claws. It's chest thumping where diplomacy and sanctions should have been tried.

And another case of the US playing John Wayne instead of working with our allies for a mutual resolution.

OP posts:
Dumdedumdedum · 07/04/2017 05:51

What new nightmare is this? This is ghastly. In the name of sense, he needs to be stopped, somehow. I can't believe he didn't try diplomacy or get Congress's approval. This is surreal. He's completely mad. Or am I? (I've lost all sense of reality here.)

Dumdedumdedum · 07/04/2017 05:55

Nothing to add.

Don't look at that old thread, it's FAKE!! Look at this one!!!! Trump con't
GingerIvy · 07/04/2017 06:49

He didn't get Congressional approval on it - and is being blasted by numerous members of Congress (quite rightly).

And the UK has publicly said they support the strike. FFS.

At least five killed and seven wounded in US air base strike, including civilians, Syrian governor reportedly says www.itv.com/news/story/2017-04-07/trump-orders-us-airstrikes-on-syrian-airfield/

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 07/04/2017 06:55

This Syria news is alarming and depressing in equal measure.

No thanks to the giant earthworms AND the giant pandas, thread diplomats.

GingerIvy · 07/04/2017 06:56

And let's not forget - this will be a broad stroke to attempt to push Russiagate under the carpet.

Gumpendorf · 07/04/2017 06:56

Defense official: there were Russians stationed at the base the US struck in Syria tonight, but US informed them beforehand @ForeignPolicy

And the Russians would have told Syria. So the point of the posturing is...?

Twitter suggesting the Trump narrative on mainstream news programmes is very positive. What happens next will be crucial.
