Can I buy a tv and an indoor aerial?
Are there other options like freeview?
My wifi is through my phone and is too slow to even show youtube videos half the time.

Sorry for possibly the stupidest question of all time, but back in the 60's you could watch a blooming tv without the internet so why now do I apparently need broadband?

Why can't you get broadband? You must be able to get a phone line?

ShowMePotatoSalad · 01/04/2017 16:21

You don't need the internet for freeview. Analogue TV doesn't exist anymore so an indoor TV aerial will not work.

If you want a freeview TV the property needs to have an outdoor aerial which it most likely will do. You can then buy a TV with either freeview already installed on it, or a TV and a freeview box.

Itaintme · 01/04/2017 16:22

You can get broadband through a phone line.

TheNewSchmoo · 01/04/2017 16:22

Having a council flat doesn't mean you can't have broadband?

ShowMePotatoSalad · 01/04/2017 16:22

And also there is no reason you can't have a phone line installed if not already. Then you can get broadband.

BigBrownSofa123 · 01/04/2017 16:22

Free view would be ideal. Invest in a good box that you can record on and you will soon get your money's worth.

Rossigigi · 01/04/2017 16:23

You don't need broadband get free view with an outdoor aerial....

Itaintme · 01/04/2017 16:23

Is there aerial point in the flat?

kimlo · 01/04/2017 16:24

dd1s tv has inbuilt freeview and uses an indoor aerial. I got it from argos.

Why can't you get sky?

Gillian1980 · 01/04/2017 16:27

You can use an indoor digital aerial and freeview.

myoriginal3 · 01/04/2017 16:28

This is temporary accommodation so is essentially seen as 'hostel' accommodation, though it's a studio flat. We can't get phone lines in. We also can't get sky.
No point getting a tv then is there?

Is there an aerial on the roof? Can you ask the other residents if there is an outdoor aerial?

BendingSpoons · 01/04/2017 16:30

I'm confused. I just bought a TV. It has no aerial, is is not plugged into an aerial, it is not a smart TV so doesn't need internet, it just shows a picture!

myoriginal3 · 01/04/2017 16:30

I've hope - there is what looks like an aerial point here. So a tv with freeview on it and what else would I need?

OP posts:
kimlo · 01/04/2017 16:30

yes there is you just need a decent indoor aerial, and you will be able to take them with you when you move.

myoriginal3 · 01/04/2017 16:31

I don't know any of the others here well enough though I think I've heard a tv before (though maybe watching through their wifi).

Bending spoons - what have you got? It sounds like just what I need!

OP posts:
Catgotyourbrain · 01/04/2017 16:33

Freeview works on an indoor aerial! Look for a digital one - we use a tiny one that attaches to the window with suckers and it's fine.

myoriginal3 · 01/04/2017 16:33

I can't get an outdoor aerial. I don't know if there is one outside, I certainly haven't seen one. We're not allowed to install anything here. Which completely sucks, but such is life.

BillSykesDog · 01/04/2017 16:34

Could you get mobile internet access? I think Virgin do a good deal, they target students near me. Good luck, temp accommodation is miserable enough without a bit of entertainment.

Itaintme · 01/04/2017 16:34

Is there a cable coming out of the aerial point? You just plug that into the back of a tv if there's an outdoor aerial already there.

LauraGashley · 01/04/2017 16:35

Most new TVs will have built in free view, you just need a digital aerial. If there is an aerial point that's a good start, but if it's an old building, then it may be an analogue aerial. Can you check with the owners/neighbours?

Itaintme · 01/04/2017 16:36

Look for a good indoor aerial.I've had freeveiw working on an indoor aerial.

myoriginal3 · 01/04/2017 16:39

I have wifi on my phone but it's so slow it certainly wouldn't stream live tv.

There is no cable coming out of the tv point thing. It's just a round hole?

Can't check with neighbours as they don't speak English (the ones next to me) and I don't know the other ones to say hello to.

Thanks all - I'll see about getting a digital indoor aerial and pray that it works!

My TV was just a fairly basic one from Argos with built in freebie. It is a few years old (ambiguous use of the word 'just' in my last post. I do live in an urban area, no idea if that affects the signal quality. My old flat had a round aerial socket. I never needed to use it but that's a good sign if you have one. When did TVs become so complicated?!

RJnomore1 · 01/04/2017 16:42

Sorry when you said council flat I didn't think hostel.

Indoor aerial yep
