You'd think she was part of the shadow cabinet the amount of times she gets mentioned. She just shock jock from a privileged background, not a politician!

Oh Gawd what's the talentless mare been banging on about now

TomaytoTomahto · 31/03/2017 02:13

Who? Halo

AntiHop · 31/03/2017 02:17

I think she's great. I admire how she challenges people on political issues.

mimishimmi · 31/03/2017 02:25

I like her. I don't think she comes from a particularly privileged background.

mimishimmi · 31/03/2017 02:26

And even if she did, doesn't mean someone is automatically a jerk.

brummiesue · 31/03/2017 03:51

Doesn't come from a privileged background?? Her dad is a famous actor/director, her mum is a famous film producer and she went to a 9k a term private school Hmm

cuirderussie · 31/03/2017 05:40

Brum I was going to say that.. I know someone stonkingly rich who went to school with Lily Allen, I reckon Lily gets her weird "I was poor growing up" attitude from the fact that she probably was one of the poor ones in Bedales!

If you look at a list of news articles mentioning Lily Allen, most of them are from the Daily Mail.

DevelopingDetritus · 31/03/2017 06:28

I don't get the fascination with her either.

ForalltheSaints · 31/03/2017 06:54

It's not just Newsnight that gives her too much attention.

KathArtic · 31/03/2017 08:13

is she representing 'da yoof'?

Doyouwantabrew · 31/03/2017 08:15

What pisses me off is her fake cockney accent. You are posh love.

Don't know why they ask her either.

brexitstolemyfuture · 31/03/2017 09:58

Not privileged? She's the very definition Biscuit

floraeasy · 31/03/2017 10:00

Her dad is a famous actor/director, her mum is a famous film producer

That likely explains a lot of the airtime she is getting.

ThePiglet59 · 31/03/2017 10:11

This thread will make her cry you know?

KC225 · 31/03/2017 10:14

Nothing more annoying than a fool with an opinion and a platform.

I think you are right OP

user1489179512 · 31/03/2017 10:16

She is an irritant who should be starved of the oxygen of publicity.

EdmundCleverClogs · 31/03/2017 10:26

Yes, because all politicians are born with into their roles, and most do not have privileged backgrounds. They are total opposites of Lily Allen.

I don't understand the vitriol against her. It seems that some have decided because you have money or an 'unworthy' famous career (pop star, ex-footballer, the general 'thick but well paying' jobs'), you're not allowed to have an opinion. Also don't get the 'talentless' description, do we just use this word to describe anyone we don't enjoy as an entertainer?

Nothing more annoying than a fool with an opinion and a platform

I think this should be Mumsnet Forums new tag line...

EnjoyYourVegetables · 31/03/2017 10:42

My solution: I now pay no attention to Newsnight.

Try it op. Seriously I feel better for not watching it.

2014newme · 31/03/2017 10:44

It's the fake accent that riles.
We know the family they are wealthy and she had a rather gilded upbringing.

mimishimmi · 31/03/2017 10:56

Ah, because minor (relatively) film directors and musician/comedians make soooo much money don't they.If that's the 'very definition' of privilege, you don't know any arms dealers, merchant bankers, big businessmen/landowners obviously. She would have been going to school with their kids - although I don't see hoe attending 13 schools by the age of 15 would have led to lasting friendships. Maybe they do speak with a Cockney accent at home... why should she adopt a plummy one because of her schooling (which she was kicked out of)?

CalonGoch · 31/03/2017 11:04

The DM has been hinting for a long time that there's a fair amount of domestic chaos going on behind the scenes, and is probably circling in the hope that there'll be a collapse they can leap on. In the meantime, the readership-baiting comments about Brexit/immigration do their job for them.

brexitstolemyfuture · 31/03/2017 13:47

Did you mean to post that here? Domestic chaos?

She attended some of the most expensive schools in the country and i don't think you can call Harry enfeild a minor comedian, he was huge at the time.

Yes, Lily Allen was plucked from the peasants in the Workhouse on account of her massive talent and great political savvy.

Aside from that, I'm not sure why being famous gives you any greater insight into politics than the average person on the street.

cuirderussie · 31/03/2017 14:36

Her multiple expulsions from expensive schools only underlines how extremely privileged she was. No matter how unstable or rebellious, someone always bailed her out-most people don't have chances like that. She still managed to emerge uninformed and ignorant though, which makes it all the more irritating to see her on Newsnight. What on earth are her credentials?
