To not want DH to buy this?

Babypassport · 27/03/2017 07:16

DH got 2k bonus at work this month (hurrah!). At the weekend he bought me the most beautiful handbag for £600, by far my most expensive handbag and one I will probably use a lot.

He wants to spend the rest of the bonus on a Macbook, as he works in IT and is increasingly having to deal with Macbook related issues, so he would like to fiddle with one to get properly to grips with it.

It wouldn't be his main computer, he already has a very nice PC laptop, a desktop and a tablet. Also, I will be back at work from mat leave in a few months and will get my work Macbook back, so he would be able to play with that as much as he wants.

So the question is, AIBU and hypocritical to not want him to have his toy after he bought me my own toy? It just seems like a waste of money for something he will play with and then probably discard until it is obsolete, but then isn't a nice handbag just as wasteful?

So it's ok for you to have a very expensive bag, yet he can't have what he wants?

YABVU and selfish.

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 27/03/2017 07:58

YABVU, and completely ridiculous.

Papergirl1968 · 27/03/2017 07:58

You are both nuts. Put the £2k towards paying off your mortgage or if you've already done that, in a savings fund.
Neither of you need these "toys." Buying the computer I can just about understand, although not if it's not going to be used much. Putting it towards a car or even a holiday I could relate to. However £600 on a handbag when so many people have literally nothing just seems a huge waste.

Wishiwasmoiradingle2017 · 27/03/2017 07:59

Depends if he bought you the bag so you couldn't say no to his purchase. . .

SaucyJack · 27/03/2017 08:00

YANBU.

He should buy a £600 laptop for his existing laptop. Much better.

Not.

SaucyJack · 27/03/2017 08:00

*laptop CASE

HermioneJeanGranger · 27/03/2017 08:03
Hmm
eleven59 · 27/03/2017 08:04

£600 on a handbag is more unreasonable in my opinion.

MackerelOfFact · 27/03/2017 08:04

So he has other computers - presumably you have other bags, too? Sainsbury's sell a fetching orange one for just 5p which will do the same job!

YABU and a total hypocrite, sorry. If you're splurging on unnecessary 'luxury' fripperies, a handbag is certainly no more worthy than a computer.

AprilTheGiraffe · 27/03/2017 08:08

eBay do refurbished laptops sometimes, and I've seen deals on places like ItIsOn or wowcher for refurbished MacBooks.

CactusFred · 27/03/2017 08:19

YABU. A MAC is far more useful that an overpriced handbag!!

My DH is getting a bonus this month too. He's buying a (£500) complete waste of money camera (IMO) but I have to let him as he doesn't get many treats- and I'm getting a Sea Salt coat (£90). Rest into savings.

I'm twitching as I'd rather it all went to savings but he is allowed to buy himself something every now and then with a bonus he's got for HIS hard work.

Let your bloke off the hook!

ladymariner · 27/03/2017 08:26

Really???? You need to ask?? What's the matter op, have you seen a pair of shoes that match your ridiculously overpriced bag that you'd prefer him to spend HIS bonus on......yes, yabu!

emmyrose2000 · 27/03/2017 08:31

YABVU

600 on a handbag is a complete waste of money. That would've been better spent on something useful - like a computer/laptop/mac.

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 27/03/2017 08:31

Of course YABU, what do you want him to spend the rest of his bonus on? Hmm

steff13 · 27/03/2017 08:32

I think you're being unreasonable unless you're struggling and need the money for bills. In which case, the handbag is unreasonable too. I doubt your employer would be very impressed with your husband fiddling around on your work computer, either.

NerrSnerr · 27/03/2017 08:36

If you're worried about money then why not take the bag back and put that back in towards family funds? A MacBook will be much more useful then a handbag. YABU especially as it's his bonus.

roundaboutthetown · 27/03/2017 08:43

YAB unbelievably U. £600 on a handbag is a colossal waste of money - just asking to be stolen, along with all its contents. A Macbook to test things out on for work is far less of a waste of money. He really can't experiment on your work Macbook - unless maybe you want to go through a disciplinary process or be sacked for misuse of company property.

DavetheCat2001 · 27/03/2017 08:45

I am wincing at the immediate spending of a £2k bonus on such nonsense as a handbag and an overpriced computer.

Of course it's your husbands money to spend as he sees fit, but I would be more inclined to put it towards the mortgage or a family holiday or in a rainy day fund.

Oh and YABVVU to have an issue with him spending some of his bonus on something HE wants, whilst happy to accept an overpriced handbag.

feathermucker · 27/03/2017 08:48

YABVVU.

How can you not see this?!

Klaphat · 27/03/2017 08:48

Leaving out the reasonableness or otherwise of spending £600 on a bag, why can't he just install the apple OS on a partition and tinker with it there? Is there a reason?

VeryButchyRestingFace · 27/03/2017 08:51

Is this a reverse? Are you actually Mr Mac, OP?

BarbaraofSeville · 27/03/2017 08:51

Most employers wouldn't be happy with their employer's spouse 'fiddling about' with a work issue laptop. For that reason alone YABU.

Without knowing your financial position in terms of pensions, savings, debt, mortgage etc etc, it is impossible to say whether laptops and/or handbags are an appropriate use of your DHs bonus or not, but assuming that it is genuine spare treat money, the split seems fair enough, assuming that if you got a £2k bonus, you could spend £1400 on yourself and give your DH £600 to treat himself.

mrsmuddlepies · 27/03/2017 08:51

So shocked at someone buying a £600 handbag!
YABU totally unreasonable, particularly as he wants to use it to improve his MAC skills. You sound rather controlling and a bit of a princess if you seriously think you can tell him how he has to spend his bonus.

Motherbear26 · 27/03/2017 08:52

Surprised at the level of hatred re the handbag... if it brings you joy it's worth every penny. Surely how they spend their bonus is entirely their choice? However OP, the same is also true of the MacBook. If he wants it then it's no more frivolous that your bag. Sorry but YABU.

OnionKnight · 27/03/2017 08:52

A PP raised an interesting point, if it's your work computer they probably won't appreciate him fiddling with it.

why can't he just install the apple OS on a partition and tinker with it there? Is there a reason?

That won't work, he needs a Mac or a Hackintosh.
