To think my job interview outfit is a bit rubbish

phillipadarcy · 26/03/2017 21:44

I'm a size 12 but I have large hips and find trousers don't suit me.

I have a really nice black dress which I wear for job interviews. It looks great in the summer with nude tights and black heels.

My problem is, this isn't formal enough for a winter job interview as unless it's a very hot day, nude tights/bare arms and legs would not be considered formal enough.

Black tights look good but then don't match black heels and matched with a black blazer I'm too black!!!

I may be overanalysing but I feel I'm giving a poor first impression. What can I do to improve this?

It's for a professional role. A suit would be expected really.

This is the dress:

This is the blazer:

Then black tights and these shoes:www.russellandbromley.co.uk/courts/pinpoint/invt/236123

It sounds nice altogether but it reality I feel it just doesn't work.

I don't want a pic of myself on here but I am fairly slim and tall.

You're overthinking! Wear black tights, 40d, job done.

phillipadarcy · 26/03/2017 21:46

I'm 26.

phillipadarcy · 26/03/2017 21:47

The black tights don't seem to match though! :-( They don't look good with the black heels.

I will try 40d see if that looks better.

The blazer is that one but in black not navy. Maybe a different colour would be better?

It looks ok to me. TBH I would always wear a blazer with the dress whether summer or winter as bare arms can be a bit too informal in an interview situation.
You might get better responses & suggestions in style & beauty rather than AIBU. Good luck with the interview.

snotato · 26/03/2017 21:48

You are overthinking.your potential employers want to employ you,not your wardrobe.
Please relax.And good luck.x

LilacSpatula · 26/03/2017 21:49

Sounds great but I think you need something extra - maybe a scarf or a statement necklace. Just something to add interest.

FloatyCat · 26/03/2017 21:49

Navy blazer would be mis matched, stick with black for black dress. Add a coloured necklace if you feel it is too dark.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 26/03/2017 21:49

I agree that you're overthinking. That dress and blazer look nice. I'd go for the nude tights and maybe a necklace to break up the black on your top half?

OneMoreForExtra · 26/03/2017 21:50

Contrasting colour jacket. Multiple unmatched blacks are grim.

Or...Crazy idea... Get a winter dress / suit, so you have smart outfits year round?

Allthebestnamesareused · 26/03/2017 21:51

try barely black tights which are a bit sheerer than full black.

As a lawyer I frequently wore all black (dresses, jackets, tights and shoes).

Nemesia · 26/03/2017 21:51

Nothing wrong with nude tights and a blazer in the spring time if you want to avoid all black.

Allthebestnamesareused · 26/03/2017 21:51

Or wear a coloured scarf with the black combo

Glossolalia · 26/03/2017 21:53

I quite like the hot pink version of your dress.

I agree with shirley you could wear 40d tights.

A question, if I may, as you are going for roles that require you to wear a suit - what will you wear if you get the job?

phillipadarcy · 26/03/2017 21:54

What colour blazer would look nice?

OP posts:
ememem84 · 26/03/2017 21:56

I have a black dress which I wear with a bright royal blue blazer. Or a bhrgandy one.

phillipadarcy · 26/03/2017 21:56

The day to day dress code would be smart casual. But pretty smart. Men wear suit trousers, shirt and smart shoes. Women wear black shoes, black trousers and a blouse.

OP posts:
phillipadarcy · 26/03/2017 21:57

It is considered the norm to wear a suit to interview though. Better not to risk it and be too casual.

Burgundy sounds nice.

I have a similar black dress which I wear with a cerise pink jacket. Similar to this one www.silkfred.com/boutiques/figl/clothing/red-collarless-and-buttonless-jacket?tcode=GPPC_PLAs&gclid=CKy8jL2J9dICFZQy0wodwMILCQ

HarryPottersMagicWand · 26/03/2017 22:07

I had to buy an interview outfit recently. I have this dress which is slightly darker than the picture and little bit more flared here It's really lovely on and I wore it with a black jacket, nude tights and black mary jane style shoes that have a white trim. I had to go somewhere after wearing it and everyone said it looked very smart.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 26/03/2017 22:14

I think all black is fine as long as the fabric of the dress and jacket look ok when they're together. I'd go for a necklace rather than a scarf (because my DH has a strong hatred of chiffon neck scarves and would irrationally take against anyone wearing one).

andintothefire · 26/03/2017 22:17

I think nude tights would be absolutely fine if you don't want to wear black tights

AYankinSpanx · 26/03/2017 22:19

I think a sleek nude tight would look loads better than black OP.

The dress is great but black and blue can be a bit jarring depending on the shades, and mismatched blacks can look off as mentioned upthread.

If the shades look fine together, then I'd definitely ditch the black tights anyway!

IHeartDodo · 26/03/2017 22:22

Copy the girl in the picture and wear a thin poloneck under the dress?! Maroon /mustard /dark green might look good depending on your colouring.
My mum always says that black and blue makes you look like a bruise! Grin

Lingotria · 26/03/2017 22:23

It's a suit dress so you do need a blazer. To avoid clashing blacks/fabrics just get a nice white or blue blazer from Zara. Wear opaque black tights (100 dernier) and black heels with white/blue trim

IHeartDodo · 26/03/2017 22:23

Ooh and then wear opaque tights the same colour as the poloneck??
