I mean, come on now

Wibu to complain to the school?
OP posts:

Horrendous & embarrassing. No wonder English education is in such a state. If I didn't know better, I'd say it was a spoof.

I would assume it was a mithered teacher/ta who remembered at the very last minute

That's the thing though, isn't it? If you're a teacher, it's your responsibility to be organized enough that these sorts of things don't creep up and make you "mithered". At least that's the impression I'm getting from the teacher training course I'm currently doing.

All that aside, I'd be seriously side-eyeing any teacher who made it as far as getting put in front of a class and didn't understand simple homophones. How can you teach them if you don't know them?

It's not simply about homophones, though. The difference between "You're" and "Your" is a grammar issue.

Complain.

Madwoman5 · 27/03/2017 00:02

Send a copy to the chair of governors and ask them if they think you are being unreasonable to expect a good standard of english grammar in their school. Then sit back and watch the fireworks.

IvyLeagueUnderTheSea · 27/03/2017 00:31

Oh lord, I've just realised.
I left it to my TA to sort out the Mother's Day cards. I didn't check the inserts.
Fortunately she has excellent written English.

corythatwas · 27/03/2017 01:54

Perfectly acceptable- as long as the teacher (or TA) is at least 500 years old. Grin

emmyrose2000 · 27/03/2017 04:22

That's disgusting. There's no excuse at all for this.

Definitely complain to the head teacher on Monday.

claraschu · 27/03/2017 05:09

OP I sense you weakening. You are not going to complain, are you? The thing is that just telling the teacher isn't going to fix the problem, because the problem is that he/she can't write, ( or doesn't care enough about writing to use decent resources). To me, the crappy sentence at the bottom is just as bad as the use of "Your".

My reaction would probably have been to roll my eyes, make sure my child knew everything that was wrong with the printing, and preserve it carefully.

That's because the one time that I talked to a teacher about a similar issue in year 4 maths (this was a teacher who was truly terrible at maths), it was completely useless. The teacher just acted like a rabbit in the headlights. Of course, she didn't get better at maths.

TheColonelAdoresPuffins · 27/03/2017 07:03

Are you going to mention it op?

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 27/03/2017 07:19

So at the bottom it doesn't say 'Your my mums that is the most important job' which is the comma splicing that is aerating lots of PPs?

It says 'your my mum; that is...'

Confused

Whether your friends that you've texted care or not is immaterial. Someone needs to point it out! It the newsletter is also full of errors the issue is school wide...

To me , this is the sort of thing Ofsted should look at, rather than whether children use stupid green pens everywhere they go... (although perhaps your DC could do that as nothing is allowed not to have feedback and then reflection on feedback by the child...)

WhiskeySourpuss · 27/03/2017 07:28

I'd be at the education department this morning (Scotland so no board of governors).

Although to be honest my 9yo would have pointed this out to his teacher & said "my mum will just put that in the bin Mr T she won't be able to sleep with this in her house" 🙈

Footle · 27/03/2017 07:28

You can be grateful it doesn't say greatful.

Nquartz · 27/03/2017 07:29

I definitely think you should complain to the head.
As claraschu said if you tell the teacher she'll just be embarrassed but won't suddenly be better at grammar.

Trifleorbust · 27/03/2017 08:03

ILikeBeansWithKetchup:

You're absolutely right - I missed the semi-colon. Damned cursive writing! I am also convinced on closer inspection that it is an exclamation mark.

So the 'your' is the only issue. Still, it is fairly egregious.

As I say, I would let it go once. Everyone makes mistakes.

ButtonMooooon · 27/03/2017 11:10

Ivy imagine if you got to school today and realised this post was about your class Grin

ScarletSienna · 27/03/2017 11:19

I think I'd do what a pp said about writing it in the planner. I think it is only fair to complain to the person who made the mistake first. If it happened again then it'd be fair to mention it to the head.

If you do go to the head though, it'd only be right to also point out the mistakes you've noticed in the newsletters too.

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 27/03/2017 11:57

TheColonelAdoresPuffins · 27/03/2017 12:18

I reckon the chances of this thread not appearing in the Daily Mail is slim to none. They would love it. Grin

TheColonelAdoresPuffins · 27/03/2017 12:20

They'd probably have to include a little explanation to their readers of what's wrong with it though. Wink

FrenchJunebug · 27/03/2017 12:52

awful!

The person who made these mistakes - plural - is a teacher who appears to have literacy issues. That she/he is responsible for teaching children to be literate, is frankly
crazy.

Even more concerning is the fact that this teacher will not be able to avoid making the mistakes we see here, but she will continue to make them - and others - because she is not competent.

Report it, OP. If you choose not to, for whatever reason, it might be better not to whine here again.

user1489179512 · 27/03/2017 13:26

... is frankly crazy.

Hygellig · 27/03/2017 13:37

Definitely mention it to the school! How can they expect children to learn proper SPaG if the staff can't manage it?

grannytomine · 27/03/2017 13:39

Corrections in red, marks out of ten and send it back anonymously.

bonbonours · 27/03/2017 13:39

I would have to complain. Hate it when school get basic stuff wrong. Grr.
