AIBU to be really annoyed by people selling their dogs

I get so frustrated with people who decide they want to sell their 18 month puppy etc I mean dogs that you buy are for life. It's frustrating when I see people sell them because they don't have time etc it's like did you not think of that before you brought the dog? I just get annoyed and feel bad for the dog. I understand extreme cases but not when people just do it because they can get rid. I wish they got penalties or something.

Would you rather they kept the dogs that they no longer have the time or inclination to look after?

Or would you rather they went to the local dog rescue and get put down when they can't be homed?

I share your frustration in how many people don't think long term animal care through, but really I cant see how fining them would help.

What penalties? Who'd apply them? Would there be extenuating circumstances or just a blanket "you're rehoming a pet so you must be penalised" rule?

Yabu - people's lives change. Sometimes dog and owner are incompatible but it takes time to work that out. Sometimes thing just happen (people lose jobs, change jobs, have disabled kids that require care etc) ... the alternative is a miserable dog in an inappropriate situation with less than appropriate care. Which would you prefer?

I'm all for people carefully rehoming pets when they decide they can no longer look after them for whatever reason.

I don't think any money should be changing hands however. IMHO the only motivation should be finding a good home for your unwanted pet - not looking to recoup costs.

When I wrote about penalties I just meant it so there was a consequence to deter people from not thinking long run. Of course I would like them rehomed and not put down. Perhaps they could pay the person who is having them rehomed rather than selling their dog..I dont know I am just annoyed with people going through different pets as a trend

Perhaps we should bring back a license fee, if you had to pay £100 on top of your dog would people think twice?

OP, but then if they couldn't afford to re-home their dog, they'll probably just dump it.

Santa I used to feel the same way until a few people pointed out that giving a dog away for free (unless to a dog's home), tends to encourage the 'Anything for free' merchants to take the dog without thinking long term, or to take free dogs and sell them on to the highest bidder.

Totally agree with Santa, a dog is for life but sometimes life throws you a curve ball or your much loved dog becomes too much for you to cope with - I had this with an increasingly aggressive Malamute, I did my best but I couldn't risk her being in the house with my pre-schooler. I managed to rehome her to a guy who rehabilitates huskies & malamutes and trains them to pull sleds - dog is better off as are we but we still miss her.

A lot of people do go and buy a cute puppy and don't have any idea how to care for it or what it will be like. People should see any pet as a commitment for life but some people just don't

I guess it's better the poor dog gets rehomed than stay with someone that doesn't love it and has no idea how to care for it

Yanbu. One of my neighbours has gone through about five dogs in the past few years. They all get rehomed when they get too difficult to look after. They always go for notoriously high maintenance breeds too, like akitas or labradors Angry

I think that acquiring a dog in the first place should be a lot more difficult.

I also think breeding should be far more restricted, legally.

The casual way that people buy and sell dogs is a pet hate of mine.

Let me put it to perspective where I am coming from I have a family member who brought her 4th dog and she has given him away.. She can't look after pets but keeps buying them and then sending them away.. I am not critiquing those with genuine reasons just the ones who think it's great to have a play thing for a while and when they are bored of them get rid of them. I hope this helps clear out those with reasonable reasons.

I'd rather people sell their pet than give it away. There are many cases of animal cruelty where the abusers have got the animal for free on sites like Craig's List. If they have to pay for the animal it helps dissuade the abusers who get free kitten after free kitten to torture and kill. A piece of crap near me (because you can hardly call it a man) killed 27 kittens he got for free from Craig's List.

I wish they would contact an animal charity and keep the pet until the charity has found a new home with people who will love and care for the dog and know what is involved.

Ideally there would be some kind of pet registry so people who adopt kittens and puppies and send them on when they are no longer cute can be identified and put on a 'no pets allowed' list.

Can anyone tell me what all these abbreviation mean like; YANBU, AIBU, DH etc....Is it the community rule not to name the people involved in the story? Is it a coded language understood by everyone here but me?
For example instead of saying my male child, everyone seems to say DD or something like that. What's the point of this?

YANBU to be annoyed, but I don't know what can really be done about it.

That said - a dog that is being given away at 18 months old suggests that is has not been trained / socialised properly, and has now got to adult size where those behaviours are no longer cute, and the owner has got fed up.

Perhaps compulsory puppy training classes would be the way to go, though it's distinctly unenforceable.

If I had to find a new home for my dog I would sell him, not to recoup what I spent but because giving a dog away to a stranger is potentially very irresponsible. People value what they pay for, so if they go looking for a free animal I would usually expect them to use it for puppy farming/dog fighting or just be inexperienced owners.

I would, however, donate any money received to a dog shelter.
