To not 'get' Boden

ClarkWGriswold · 25/03/2017 18:35

Just that really. I've never bought anything from there admittedly but it all looks hideously over priced and 'samey'. I just don't get the MN love for it. Is it a status thing?

bordersarethebest - definitely - apart from a few purple shirts I've never bought adult stuff from Boden as they design for slim pear-shaped women who have English Rose colouring. Their children's stuff used to be amazing though eg multi-coloured cords(and their bedding - great quality). Like M&S, they could do with having some good staples eg plain shirts in basic colours.

Night!!! Wine

Dissing people's Boden clobber is like stirring the hornet's nest it would seem. Seems very silly to take it all so personally. Maybe peruse one of their jolly catalogues and see if that lifts your spirits!

DisneyDonna · 25/03/2017 21:49

I've never looked at the site until now. I love some of the dresses!

crapfatbanana · 25/03/2017 21:51

I love Boden. It's a bit pricey for me when it's full price but I usually make good use of the sales or offers and such. The stuff washes and wears well so is excellent for hand me downs, which makes it good value. We have loads of Mini Boden and I have a few bits for myself, mostly summer dresses as they're so comfy. The stuff is often samey, but most brands have a recognisable style. I like the Boden style so I don't mind it being samey.

pollyglot · 25/03/2017 21:51

Love their trousers, because they are reliable (mostly) in size, so I can buy from the other side of the world. In the sale, and minus VAT, they are very reasonable in cost. Would never buy anything too fitting (jackets etc), because of sizing issues, and the cost of return. Also, I never buy anything patterned as Boden colours are pretty garish. They have good resale online, if you look after them well.

I was going to mentiion that, in all fairness, Boden do have some decent breton tops, although the one I got, last year is full of holes, despite being a lovely fit, but WTF is this?
www.boden.co.uk/en-gb/womens-tops-t-shirts/breton/wo136-ivo/womens-ivory-multi-medal-embellished-breton
And they have glitter breton tops, too?

Joules has the same sort of vibe - lots of classic styles with git big splodgy and garish patterns superimposed on them.

KatherinaMinola · 25/03/2017 22:01

Bloody hell, that is making a statement, Pick!

BabyHamster · 25/03/2017 22:04

I'd never heard of Boden before MN!

I wouldn't say it is loved on here. If anything I think it seems more common on MN not to like Boden and joke about the "fun" prints etc.

I have a couple of Boden things for myself and DD and they've been pretty good, worn and washed well etc.

PollyPerky · 25/03/2017 22:05

Clark why didn't you post in Style and Beauty?
AIBU is renowned for being a forum for robust comments.
Are you unaware of that?

And as for name calling- do grow up please.

The fact you posted in this forum suggests you wanted to provoke a reaction especially as you say that Mumsnet loves Boden!

ClarkWGriswold · 25/03/2017 22:16

polly May I suggest you grab your Boden catalogue and give yourself a bit of a fan love.

It's just too twee for me.

Trite-y shite-y.

cherish123 · 25/03/2017 22:25

I do know what you mean. It is a bit in your face and gaudy. However, I have bought loads for my son there as the kids stuff is lovely, if a little overpriced. I have also bought some stuff for myself but often find myself sending things back as the quality does not often match the price, the cuts are sometimes completely wrong and the sizing is quite big.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 25/03/2017 22:26

I don't know what people are washing their Primark clothes in that they aren't lasting Confused I always see people saying Primark clothes don't last. I still have t-shirts I bought when I started uni almost 5 years ago, they've lasted fine.

lakeswimmer · 25/03/2017 22:33

I buy three or four items from Boden each year for the following reasons: with discounts they can be a good price - I got a pair of Johnnie B suede boots in September for £35 which I've worn every day since. It's easy because they do free delivery and returns and I have no time to go to shops. A lot of their clothes seem to last well (currently wearing a Boden long sleeve t-shirt which I've had for years and its still in one piece and very flattering), I don't give a shit about looking fashionable. Apparently I'm a PTA Mum - that's fine - I was volunteering at a PTA event today Grin

I agree that some of their clothes are a bit grim but I buy basics in neutral colours.

Bettyspants · 25/03/2017 22:42

Love mini Boden. Can actually get children's clothes that look like children's clothes rather than scaled down adult stuff. I like the good quality that lasts a couple years and can then be sold on, used to always go to eBay or sales where it's reasonable and completely worth the money as it lasts! But if you're on a tight budget there's similar stuff available much cheaper elsewhere it just isn't the same quality. 10 yrs ago I wouldn't buy it as it was too fucking expensive. Wage has gone up so I Love it. Adult stuff can be a bit twee but there are also some lovely staples and bargains and the twee stuff is good for work when I'm doing clinics patients seem to like that look..

billybigballs · 25/03/2017 22:47

No you're not BU because you can think what you like but YABU to post on here asking MN to back you up, because the world would be boring if we all liked the same thing, and people are allowed to buy stuff from wherever they like. I have never bought anything from Boden but I couldn't care less where anyone buys their clothes from.

Sorry just reread that back and it sounded a bit harsh. but you get what I mean.

Wickedstepmum67 · 25/03/2017 22:57

I have one or two 'bits and bobs' acquired in charity shops. The quality is ok and it looks fine styled with other things. I suspect doing Boden 'head to toe' might be a bit 'minor member of the royal family trying to look hip'. And from now on I am calling a certain brand 'Catholic Kidston' 😂

TheGaleanthropist · 25/03/2017 23:00

Bettys I can see how items that in everyday life say "twee", in a clinical setting say "safe, solid, dependable, trustworthy" and that can be exactly the right message to be sending in that context.

228agreenend · 25/03/2017 23:05

Anyone else had a browse at the Boden website as a result of this thread?

Last time I looked at the sale, couldn't really find anything I liked. However, just looked at the clearance section (70% off) and bought a few things, plus a dress from the sales section.

Forgot to say earlier, loved the children clothes when my dcs were little. Having tall children, Boden (in the sales) was one of the only places I could get boys clothes that made them still look like children, and not teens, and sold them on EBay to recoup my money.

Crumbs1 · 25/03/2017 23:13

I like Bowden for everyday basics - workwear, comfortable day dresses etc some stuff is a bit shapeless and some material is a bit thin but overall it's practical, cheap clothes.

Crumbs1 · 25/03/2017 23:13

That is Boden not Bowden

ILoveDolly · 25/03/2017 23:21

Well. What i don't get is the need to slag off people who wear clothes you personally wouldn't. Anyway, I'm a middle aged middle class middle income country mum so I'm target audience. And I love it. And cath kidston. And white company. And I don't care who knows it.
