To not 'get' Boden

ClarkWGriswold · 25/03/2017 18:35

Just that really. I've never bought anything from there admittedly but it all looks hideously over priced and 'samey'. I just don't get the MN love for it. Is it a status thing?

I'm well under 30 and I love it & it's very popular with people I interact with

PickAChew · 25/03/2017 21:03

I'm middle aged and happy to own it. Very little that boden sells really does it for me, though, just as i don't bother with white stuff because the quality is shocking for the price. hush leaves me completely cold.

AllDaBoats · 25/03/2017 21:06

I only ever buy boden second hand as it's over priced buying new.

And for Kids clothes I much prefer Polarn o. Pyret as it's better quality and more unique (mostly)

The typical comments, almost inverted snobbery sometimes. Boden might not be to everyones taste- but is any brand?

The clothes wash extremely well (especially kids stuff, which is usually good quality). I don't like everything, but have bought some tops for work and they look smart and have worn well. It's not cutting edge fashion, but I am not going to pretend I am, or want to be- you can be stylish and look nice without following the latest fashion trends.

I agree with itsmine about some of the posts being a bit off. It's fine not like the clothes. But some of the comments are quite unpleasant and judgemental (and also agree posters would be falling over themselves to take to task anyone who said anything like "ugh... it's such a chavs uniform")

SuckingEggs · 25/03/2017 21:09

I'm a PTA mum and I manage to look fine. Oh, what a shocker - mums looking like mums! Whatever that means.

White Stuff is ghastly.

I have a lot of Boden. Mostly pretty basic stuff as I'm a jeans-and-tshirt type of person, so long-sleeve tops, cashmere and so on. They last and look and feel good.

Also have several beautiful jackets: a velvet one with Nehru collar from five or six years ago, in the most lovely and unusual grey-blue colour, just so well-made and well-cut; two wool military jackets, again, really well-made, velvet facing on the inside, warm, unusual, always asked where I got them; a rich brown moleskin blazer, softest fabric ever, fits like a glove and pulls me in at the waist.

I'm not really in the supposed Boden demographic (Northern, bit punky, into sci-fi, low income) but I like nice things and I get a lot of pleasure out of clothes. I buy in sale / clearance or with vouchers and make sure to send back anything that isn't special enough.

Currently wearing a knitted cotton hoody that I bought this week from the teen boys' range in johnnie B - it's fantastic! Really cosy, lovely marled knit. And only £20 with the discounts. I liked it so much I bought the same one for 8-year-old DS (but will make sure we don't wear them at the same time Blush )

StellaRockafella · 25/03/2017 21:14

It's not my thing as it's just not very modern, the prints in particular. On the whole it's just missing a certain je ne sais quoi, (for want of a better phrase)!

Sometimes when I'm looking through their catalogue I can see exactly which designer/or 'must have' item they've re-worked/been inspired by, but they always somehow miss the mark. Either the colourway is off, the sleeve length not right, or some other detail or the fit undermines what could have been a really great item. I find this with their shoes in particular. So often they're almost bang on the money, but the heel shape or height will be totally wrong, or the toe isn't pointed enough, or the detailing/embellishment looks cheap.

It's also become surprisingly bland, and the fabrics aren't as good as they used to be. The cashmere is pretty good.

It seems like there are far more mark-downs and reductions, which makes me wonder how sales are doing. I also think the production values and finish on the photographs/catalogues aren't of as high quality as they used to be.

Anyway, if Boden works for you fitwise, it's an easy go-to brand. I can understand why they have loyal customers, and their customer service is second to none. (Vital for an online clothing retailer). It's also brands that is used as a signifier. The branding plays a huge part in this - just the other day I noticed a woman coming out of one of the chambers near Temple and she was carrying a green polka dot Boden shoe bag. It made me laugh as she's exactly the right demographic!

Victoria1083 · 25/03/2017 21:14

You don't have to get it but I look amazing in their stuff (as I'm always told) ;-)

AllFurCoatNoKnickera · 25/03/2017 21:16

I didn't get it until I stumbled upon a pair of their portobello jeans on eBay and paid £15 for them.

They are the best jeans I've ever worn. Perfectly skinny. Don't sag, great length and suck everything in.

Forever devoted to Boden!

ClarkWGriswold · 25/03/2017 21:17

PollyPerky what a complete misnomer; you sound anything but!

I'm not sure why you have decided to take my rather lighthearted post so seriously and venture into nasty and insulting territory. Seems a bit odd. Do you work for Boden? Have shares?

The cropped cashmere cardies are perfect for me - nowhere else does them small enough to be properly cropped. They are pricey but i look out for sales and they last really well - some lovely colours too.

I live in Scotland so cashmere cardies are worn pretty much year round - Boden cashmere lasts well.

woodhill · 25/03/2017 21:22

I don't think their stuff is as good as it used to be but I have bought lots over the years. Winter coats, lovely Boots and skirts.

A top I've had 5 years still looks new. They don't seem to have the colour choices now.

Flumpernickel · 25/03/2017 21:22

FGS, "mummys" and " PTA mums" are not some sort of hard done by, victims of discrimination, or some sidelined misunderstood underclass. Not everyone likes Boden, and some of us just think it looks like a bland "mum" uniform, wear it, dont wear it, I really could care less, but for goodness sake, learn to accept that not everyone shares the same opinion as you! Hmm

PollyPerky · 25/03/2017 21:22

OP
Just wonder why you have to come along and post at all.You know it would insult people but then saying it's all light hearted now tries to make other people look bad.

If you don't 'get' a brand, don't wear it. But don't expect to post in AIBU and get fluffy comments when you are being provocative.

SuckingEggs · 25/03/2017 21:24

Oh the irony Flumper

Flumpernickel · 25/03/2017 21:24

Oh and for the record, there are only two posters that have mentioned "chavs" here, and it sure as heck wasnt the Boden haters. The irony.

Flumpernickel · 25/03/2017 21:27

Grin hahaha Sucking, best thing? Read the whole thread and you will find a while lot more Wink

Flumpernickel · 25/03/2017 21:27

Whole

DameSquashalot · 25/03/2017 21:35

I used to buy lots from Boden when I was young free and single. I've bought bits and pieces for DD from their sales/dodgy EBay sellers, but she much prefers Primark...

Marmitelover55 · 25/03/2017 21:44

Haven't bought anything for a while but always managed to sell 2nd hand stuff for a good price. Once I even sold a couple of anoraks for more than I paid (after a couple of years wear!).
