To not 'get' Boden

ClarkWGriswold · 25/03/2017 18:35

Just that really. I've never bought anything from there admittedly but it all looks hideously over priced and 'samey'. I just don't get the MN love for it. Is it a status thing?

OP posts:
Flumpernickel · 25/03/2017 19:15

Ugh, team some Boden or Joules with a pair of PTA boots (flat ugly calf boots) and you have the 'mummy' uniform indeed. If you really want to fit in to this bland stereotype, chuck in some tattered converse and a oil cloth cath kidston bag for good measure! Grin

Flumpernickel · 25/03/2017 19:16

Sorry, I should add, the tattered converse are the spring PTA boot alternative.

OliviasWhiteHat · 25/03/2017 19:20

Not too bothered for the ladies clothes. Love the kids clothes. Quality is great, resale on eBay means I generally get at least half what I paid back. And the clothes are how I think kids should be dressed. Can't bear the 'mini adult' stuff you see in river island, Asda, and at times Next.
Usually shop when there is 20% off.
I like it 😊

NerrSnerr · 25/03/2017 19:21

I think it is very expensive for children. I get that it's good quality but my daughter is only 2 so she grows out of all clothes before they wear out whether it's Boden or Asda. We get most of her stuff in the charity shops anyway but I'll buy whatever label if I like them.

ElspethFlashman · 25/03/2017 19:21

I won't have a word said against Joules! That Harbour top is the only stripey top that actually hides my wobbly belly! I will buy it, weeping with gratitude, until they stop making it.

But Boden.....yeah....never heard of it outside MN or blogs - Boden and Hush both chuck a hell of a lot of product at the Mummy 40-something bloggers.

(And Seven Boot Lane shoes. And Village London bags. Brands that you rarely see on anyone in real life and you wonder how they keep going.)

topcat2014 · 25/03/2017 19:24

Just found out they did men's stuff. The thing is, I could buy some, but it wouldn't make me
a) 20 years younger
b) 6 inches taller
c) two stone lighter,

So, on balance, I think I will stick with primark.

sticklebrix · 25/03/2017 19:25

I inherit DM's Boden castoffs and quite like them TBH. Comfy and good quality. But I don't have the remotest interest in fashion. So perhaps I prove the PP's bland stereotype point?

PollyPerky · 25/03/2017 19:25

It's hardly pricey but that depends on where you shop. Friend of mine only buys designer jeans at over £100 pair so Boden is cheap!

They are no more pricey than Hobbs, Jigsaw, Ted Baker, French Connection and The White Company.

I am too old to buy clothes from H&M or New Look. I like quality not something that falls apart after 2 washes.

Boden is like all brands- some nice stuff, some hideous. I buy plain trousers for smart casual work, cashmere in the sale, T shirts in the sale, and that's about it.

The dresses are hideous on the whole but maybe once a season there is something plain and simple that's ok.

I don't think it's a status thing at all- as I said, it's not exactly Chanel.

lottieandmia · 25/03/2017 19:26

Years ago the kids clothes were brilliant - indestructible! I used to be able to pass them down twice. Now they are not nearly as good sadly.

squoosh · 25/03/2017 19:26

Oops! Obv I meant Cath 😳

Catholic Kidston is a bit more niche, she covers statues of the Madonna and Child in charming floral prints!

I have only ever bought one new thing from Boden.
Its a long stripy tunic top.
I got it in the sale and it was over priced IMO.
Its ok but certainly no better than Sainsburys.

I will never order from them again. Not because of the price or quality but because of the sheer amount of bloody emails and post they send.
I only bought a top. I didn't shag Jonnie Boden ffs.

winewolfhowls · 25/03/2017 19:29

Nice dresses for work, but I buy only in the sales

GreenPeppers · 25/03/2017 19:31

I have big boobs and it's the only place where I can buy dresses that fit.

Babyroobs · 25/03/2017 19:32

I used to buy a lot of the kids stuff in their sales for my dd but she has outgrown it now. The only other thing I buy is their leggings for myself as they are the comfiest I have found and last forever. Boden are always sending me £10 gift vouchers so I never pay much for them either.

Cosmicglitterpug · 25/03/2017 19:32

If you 'don't get it', what's there to discuss?

CharlieSierra · 25/03/2017 19:33

MN is generally snarky about Boden. You don't need to 'get' it, you either like or don't like. Personally I really like the bistro trousers, my ruched skirt, and plain t shirts, none of which make me look even slightly frumpy. The cashmere is also good although I prefer Pure.

KatherinaMinola · 25/03/2017 19:33

The children's clothes are very good quality, and I'd rather buy a couple of excellent quality more expensive items than armfuls of cheap ones.

The adult clothes are mumtastic (and out of my price range anyway). I suppose they appeal because (1) it's online shopping so it's easy for those with kids, with (2) a 3 month period for returns - ditto - and (3) presumably also good quality. Also, whilst they are a bit frumpy, they are very presentable clothes.

For those who don't enjoy shopping - and probably don't care much about fashion - I can definitely see the appeal.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 25/03/2017 19:33

It's hardly pricey

I wish I lived in a world where £43 for a pack of baby bodysuits wasn't "pricey"

AuntieStella · 25/03/2017 19:36

I don't think MN (such as it can exist as a hive, or should that be the Borg?) is anywhere near as in love with Boden as it was around say 2010.

It's run out of ideas and the quality is poorer.

I haven't bought anything there for so long that they've even stopped sending me a catalogue!

KatherinaMinola · 25/03/2017 19:37

There are some stupidly priced things but I am sitting here in a Johnnie B top which cost me £12 something, which looks as good as new after a year and will probably do me for another 3-4 years! I couldn't get that in Zara.

TheSnorkMaidenReturns · 25/03/2017 19:40

As an older woman, I'm no longer interested in transitory fashion. I'm not a particular fan of Boden for me, but I'm perfectly happy to buy from the many brands advertising and marketing at women like me. As far as I'm concerned it's a good thing that there are clothes for middle aged women, and we don't have to go straight from cheap crap like New Look to elasticated polyester trews.

For work I want good quality clothes, with neck high enough not to expose my bosom, with arms that cover my upper arms, cut to cover my misshapen tum, and dresses that don't stop half way up my thigh. Exposing all these things looks pretty shit on the vast majority of fifty-plus women.

However Boden boys' clothes are amazing. It lasted years - tops, shorts and trousers were still good to hand on after four or more years' wear.

Mummyoflittledragon · 25/03/2017 19:43

Love the girls cardigans with the intarsia animals. So does dd. She has 3 although only bought one a year so the oldest is ratty and a bit small.

In the past couple of years, I have bought a couple of dresses, a skirt and a top very much in the clearance sale. Less than half price. And I love everything I bought. A lot of the stuff is samey but sometimes you can get a gem.

PollyPerky · 25/03/2017 19:44

I have no idea about the price of children's clothes Ovaries. The OP was talking about adults I assume.

Wait for the sales- just got a cashmere jumper with 60% off and a £10 voucher too.

I don't know why people are so angered by Boden.

I could say the same about the stuff in Primark, New look, Dotty Ps, H&M, not to mention All Saints, Hush, etc etc.

I'm middle aged, don't want M&S, Alexon, CC , Per Una, Coast, Precis etc etc.

Where else is there for everyday smart casual?

I buy White Company and a bit of Mint Velvet.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 25/03/2017 19:45

I do think it's expensive.

However DS got hand me downs from a friend of mine when he was much younger and they were all lovely, great quality and washed well.

I've never looked at anything other than the children's clothes though.
