They're all festooned with "Mother's Day"

It's not mother's day, it's Mothering Sunday!

And whilst I'm ranting..what the heck? EASTER CARDS???

We've always had Easter cards.

YANBU about the Easter cards. Who buys them, I've never received one in my life.

My gran still sends all her GC Easter cards with a fiver in them to buy an Easter egg.

Mothers Day is a secular holiday which is about giving your ma a card and flowers.

Why would there be cards for the former?

I searched high and low to find one that didn't say 'to Mum/my Mum/my Mother' on it. Dragged out soppy verse after verse looking for something that said 'On Mothers Day' or 'For you on Mothering Sunday' or something like that that I could give to MIL.

Gave up in the end. All the soppy verses got to me. It's not a nice time of year to have a dead mother.

Just buy a blank card and write inside it.

I noticed a lot of Mothering Sunday cards this year! My mum prefers them, and I've had far more choice this year than previously.

I agree 'Mothering Sunday' is correct term, op. 'Mother's Day' seems to have become the lazy norm.

Easter cards have been around - and sent - for years. I sometimes send them (mainly the religious Easter ones) but not every year and not nearly as many as Christmas cards!

Mother's Day is in May though, not March. Mother's Day has taken over Mothering Sunday which is traditionally in March. YANBU OP. My Mum was always a stickler for Mothering Sunday, so I always had to get her a card with it on.

It's a commonly celebrated occasion for people to thank their mums for years of wiping their arses and generally taking care of them. Not many people celebrate Mothering Sunday in its historical context. Do many people really want to receive or give a "Happy Mothering Sunday" card? If it's so important, companies like Moonpig exist so that you can create your own choice of design and greeting.

I ordered one from Moonpig this year (pushing the boat out! ) and it doesn't say anything about Mother's Day on the outside! It's a punny one saying "mum you're teariffic" with a little teapot and cup with faces, she likes these kind of cheesy cute ones! So I'd say Moonpig is your best choice but it's cutting it fine!

My stepum is wonderful but I don't call her mum and the 'you're like a mum' ones are vomit inducing.

Thats not the point. Mothering Sunday has nothing to do with your mother, why would there be cards to give to her for mothering Sunday?

There are loads of Mothering Sunday cards in my local independent card shop. I was surprised. (But I still bought a nice, blank-inside card because my mother detests nauseating poetry!)

It does though, because when people went back to worship at their 'Mother church', they were going home to where they were from, so would take flowers/gifts to their Mum. Hence the tradition.

You can choose to celebrate its in a non religious way, sure. But it is still Mothering Sunday!

The phrase 'mothering sunday' always makes me think of the word smothering for some reason.

WhiteRose - you're spot on. I am amazed how many people don't know the origins of the day, just assume it's another imported commercialised event from the US.

The date isn't fixed as it is related to Lent and Easter. It's the Sunday halfway through Lent, which starts on Ash Wednesday (day after Pancake Day!!) and finishes on Easter Sunday.

Mothering Sunday has nothing to do with the woman who brought you up, it's just a church thing.

Mother's day is about the female human being who brought you up - and yes, it is a modern commercial invention, whether you cobble it onto an archaic church tradition or give it it's own day and admit it is made up to sell cards.

It IS another imported commercial even in its current form, purposefully so. It was given the same day as an almost defunct religious holidya precisely so people would think it was an old tradition. And you've fallen for it perfectly, even lecturing others!
It's nothing at all like christmas.

Either celebrate Mothering Sunday (by going to your church and having lunch at home with your ma) or celebrate Mothers Day (by buying a card in a shop) but don't complain you can't do the latter in aid of the former.

I do celebrate Mothering Sunday and go to church and visit my mother. I have not 'fallen' for it. That is why I want a Mothering Sunday card, not a Mother's Day card.
Christians have celebrated the day in this way for years before Clintons and Hallmark jumped on the bandwagon!
