To report racism to employer?

I have an acquaintance from school on fb who, in light of the terror attack yesterday, has taken to posting disgusting things about how Muslims aren't human beings, 'I think we all know the solution to the problem', you can't be British as well as being a Muslim, etc etc etc.
She works for the NHS, and to me it's worrying that someone with views like that is caring for vulnerable and unwell people, especially given that at some point in her career I'm sure she will come across Muslim patients. AIBU to report her?

I would report her. I remember being friends with someone on Facebook who kept making homophobic comments. He worked in a hotel so I called the hotel and reported it

So basically, you believe that someone with opinions that differ from yours (and mine for what it's worth) doesn't deserve a job?

DoIDareDisturbTheUniverse · 23/03/2017 10:44

I do know exactly where she works and which dept. She has it all over her page.

OP posts:
BeaderBird · 23/03/2017 10:44

Can't believe so many of you are willing to potentially change someone's life forever over an offensive FB post. Murderers get relocation and new identities but a racist comment means you lose your career, home...

DoIDareDisturbTheUniverse · 23/03/2017 10:48

Beader that makes absolute no sense and is a ridiculous false equivalency. Can you really not see the problem of someone with a duty of care believing that a large amount of people are 'subhuman' and should be 'dealt with accordingly'?!

OP posts:
PageNowFoundFileUnderSpartacus · 23/03/2017 10:49

If her employer has no social media policy, nothing will happen to her. If her employer does, then whatever happens is a consequence of her actions in choosing to ignore it when she decided to post racist opinions in public.

Megatherium · 23/03/2017 10:49

She could lose her job if you report her.

Surely she should have thought about that before posting bigoted views so publicly?

Bigots who come up with the excuse of "I'm entitled to my opinion" when challenged always make me laugh. Yes, you are, just as I'm entitled to challenge your opinion robustly. Having a bigoted world view doesn't entitle you to automatic protection from criticism. Nor does it entitle you to express that opinion in an unlawful manner.

Megatherium · 23/03/2017 10:50

BeaderBird, please tell me you don't believe that convicted murderers have their careers and homes protected.

HatHen · 23/03/2017 10:50

Report her.

I wonder if people would be telling you not to if it was any other religious group she was posting about.

BeaderBird · 23/03/2017 10:52

I'm saying the punishment you are taking it upon yourself to dish out doesn't fit the crime.

You're actions would have a catastrophic effect on this person - for what? Some words? Unless you feel that this person will start mistreating these 'sub humans' as part of their role? Are people in danger?

Justanothernameonthepage · 23/03/2017 10:53

Normally I'd say people have the right to say whatever they want, but patient safety comes first so please screenshot and report it

StrawberryMummy90 · 23/03/2017 10:53

Beader so you would be totally ok if an NHS worker said all christians are not human, need to be dealt with accordingly etc? You wouldn't think this person deserved to be reported? You would care about the affect it would have on them?

Of course you wouldn't, but seeing as she's ranting about muslims it's ok right? Biscuit

Buck3t · 23/03/2017 10:53

I'm thinking I'm leaning to go against the grain here. Someone spouting this kind of view does need to be reported. If she thinks people not like her are "sub-humans", that means if she is ever in a position of power, she will treat them accordingly.

So I should worry about her losing her job, when she wouldn't give someone like me one in the first place? Actions surely have consequences? Even if it is retraining, she needs to know how serious spouting hate is.

Megatherium · 23/03/2017 11:00

You're actions would have a catastrophic effect on this person - for what? Some words?

What would have a catastrophic effect on the person in question would be her own action, not OP's. And are you seriously suggesting that claiming the members of an entire religion are subhuman and should be deported is harmless?

BeaderBird · 23/03/2017 11:20

No, of course it's not harmless and please don't make disgusting assumptions regarding my personal beliefs.

I just don't think that these words, said on the eve of an horrific attack, should result in a person possibly losing their career.

BeaderBird · 23/03/2017 11:20

The assumption bit was to Strawberry.

BipBippadotta · 23/03/2017 11:28

If you spout hate speech on the internet, you're putting your own career at risk. This should really be obvious to anyone.

StrawberryMummy90 · 23/03/2017 11:32

I just don't think that these words, said on the eve of an horrific attack, should result in a person possibly losing their career

Careful there, you almost sound as though you're defending her words because of when she said them? So let me get this straight, if a man who identified as Christian shot up a school it would be ok for me to say ALL christians are not human and imply they should be wiped out entirely? This would be ok so long as I said it on the day of the attack? How ridiculous.

It doesn't matter when or in what circumstance she said these things, they are disgusting, hateful views and she absolutely should face consequences for them. Of course it wouldn't be ok if this was about Christians, you and I both know that regardless of whether you want to admit it.

Therealjudgejudy · 23/03/2017 11:34

Report. This is hate speech...and her words should have consequences. We know that the hate actions yesterday had devastating results.

YANBU please report her. I hope I don't come across someone with attitudes like this when I am ill and in need of health care.

If she broke any of their rules by publishing hate speech on the internet, her employers will have to follow their disciplinary policy. Whether or not she loses her job will be down to them.

x2boys · 23/03/2017 11:45

not sure what Christians have to do with anything Strawberry i know as an irish catholic man in 1970,s Manchester my dad had to endure a lot of comments when The IRA were at their worst i,m sure if social media had been around then it would have been far worse people say stupid things[ and should be challenged on it] when acts of terrorism happen most people know that the people that carry out these acts are extremists and do not hold the view of most muslims or catholics etc.

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 23/03/2017 11:48

BillSykes
5 mins on any social media site will tell you that what you have just said is utter, utter bollocks.

There is absolutely no need to make this shit up, twitter is full of it this morning under certain hashtags.

I have personally read at least 100 tweets since last night that are downright nasty, racist and completely abhorrent.

If I read that we should "send all muslims home" (to where ffs?) one more time I think my head might explode.

And no, I don't know anyone who thinks "muslims are the real victims", but I do know lots of muslims who will suffer abuse because of some twat sucked in to an extreme ideology of which the average muslim has no part.

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 23/03/2017 11:50

Ah I see in the time it took me to furiously type that response, Bill has been deleted.

MNHQ, if you wanne delete mine, cos I quote their post feel free, but I would quite like it to stand as a reply to anyone else who's thinking that....

StrawberryMummy90 · 23/03/2017 11:50

This happens every time the day after a terrorist attack, there is always a left wing lash back about how Muslims are the real victims and the real threat is 'teh racists' who are lurking everywhere right now and are probably going to refuse to change some poor Muslim granny's bed pan in hospital in retaliation

I think everyone can agree the real victims of this are the ones who lost their lives or were injured yesterday. But as certain posters on this thread have shown, we are slowly becoming desensitised to hatred being thrown at all muslims. Replace muslims with Jews/black people etc and I can almost guarantee not one person would say this woman doesn't deserve to face consequences.

Verbal and physical assaults towards muslims have increased massively (cba to get stats but google will have). It is not fair to minimise this. Of course the real victims are the ones who have been directly affected by the attack but unfortunately these attacks also affect innocent muslims who absolutely are targeted because of their religion.

Sorry you find the truth "tiresome" but thankfully a lot of people don't want innocent muslims to suffer.

StrawberryMummy90 · 23/03/2017 11:54

2boys I agree with what you have said. My point is, posters wouldn't give a shit about this woman losing her job if she was ranting about christians. But because she's targeting muslims, she gets a free pass.
