Are my portion sizes adequate

user1489509816 · 14/03/2017 20:06

So recently I switched from my large white dinner plates to my sons plastic ikea ones (can't remember the name but they're their most popular kids plates and are used in their cafes too).

A few people have suggested my portion sizes are not big enough so I was just looking for opinions on here.

Apart from these pics I've had:

1 four finger kit Kat, American cup size of strawberries, 1 banana, 2 'my first yogurts' from Rachel's organic, 1 fish finger (leftover by my son).

I've also had a skinny latte no sugar, 3 cups of coffee with 1 sugar each and a diet lemonade.

Does that seem enough calories? I know you're not experts but just after opinions really.

The food is 2 slices wholemeal bread with Nutella (on a normal plate) and banana, cous cous with turkey breast meatloaf, a wholemeal thin and veg, baked potato with beef burger and veg.

Also, OP, I'm 5'7" and a size 6. I'm not ill.

Three sugars in a coffee is really unnecessary. That combined with the Kit Kat and sugars occurring in other things you're eating would definitely add up to a lot more than you think.

MrsPMT · 14/03/2017 20:57

Those plates are tiny and if everyone looks closely, that is 1 baked potato split in two so not loads.

notanothernamechangebabes · 14/03/2017 21:02

OP- Its all relative... you'll never get an objective answer here.

I eat huge plates of food- like mountains- because I have an enormous appetite and I'm also breastfeeding. But my plates are piled with 2/3s low cal veg, and lean protein. I would never ever restrict how much fruit, veg and lean protein I eat. And man can I eat.

I think go back to your bigger plates, and put measured portions on them - or instead of your kit Kat and skinny latte, why not introduce a nutritious 4th meal- avocado on wholemeal toast or something?

LostMyDotBrain · 14/03/2017 21:03

I don't think the meals are big. I think they're a fairly normal size for light meals. But they're piled onto children's plates. OP is getting comments because people are seeing her eating from small plates for no real reason and these people don't have the same full day's insight like we have. They don't see all the extra sugar going in to top up these meals. I'd question it myself if a size 10 friend was routinely eating from little plastic plates.

ChippieBeanAndHorro · 14/03/2017 21:03

Are you trying to gain weight or lose it?

AYankinSpanx · 14/03/2017 21:04

I'm not sure what the OP wants from this thread at this point.

BitOutOfPractice · 14/03/2017 21:04

I haven't even commented on the meals. Just the "extras" (unless the nutella toast was a meal?

notanothernamechangebabes · 14/03/2017 21:05

I should add that I was an 8-10 pre pregnancy, and 5 ft 6. 10 stone (sometimes less). Currently 10-12, about 10 stone 10(?) and losing. If I want to gain weight, I add in more wholemeal carbs.

BumWad · 14/03/2017 21:08

I think the portions are ok too.

I could eat that easy and probably more and I am not in bad shape. Lots of veg in there so not really any calories are they?

raspberryblush23 · 14/03/2017 21:10

Your food is making me hungry Grin.

It looks fine to me OP but I can put away loads Smile

Judydreamsofhorses · 14/03/2017 21:11

I think this looks fine. If you're interested in other people's food as a comparison, I'm 5ft 6 and slim-ish (size 10) and today have eaten:

Breakfast - wholemeal toast and peanut butter
Snack - cereal bar
Lunch - salad of tomatoes, feta, olives, cucumber, bag of Hula Hoops, mini Milky Way
Dinner - 2 x grilled sausages, mashed potatoes, peas, gravy

I walk at least 15,000 steps a day and have a fairly active job (teacher). I'll probably have a glass of wine later too!

CantSleepClownsWillEatMe · 14/03/2017 21:12

I'd say they're fairly decent sized meals, not huge but not what I'd call small portions either. I know they're on kids plates but the cutlery actually gives a sense of scale. Perhaps the people who've commented in RL are focusing more on the size of the plate than the content?

If you're concerned that you're losing weight then maybe use MFP for a week or two so you can see what your fat and calorie intake is and adjust if needed.

PickAChew · 14/03/2017 21:13

If you feel full and are neither gaining nor losing weight, then your portion sizes are fine.

SparklyLeprechaun · 14/03/2017 21:13

It's only a kit Kat and fruit. I'm not tucking into a cheesecake and a family sized bag of doritos

A 4 finger kitkat and 2 bananas is about 60g of sugar. 3 teaspoonfuls of sugar another 12g, Nutella at least 15g. So you're eating close to 90g of sugar in snacks alone.

But if you're happy with that, crack on, nobody else's business really.

It's still strange that you're eating your meals off kids plates.

DontTouchTheMoustache · 14/03/2017 21:14

If you are still hungry then it's not enough, if you are full then it's enough. Just use normal plates ffs, it takes about a second to wash one and it's a much nicer experience to eat from. This is a weird thread, I feel like you are trying to get a pat on the back for eating small portions "by accident" or something?

iMatter · 14/03/2017 21:21

There are 23 grams of sugar in a 4 finger kit Kat alone! And most of the rest of your food has sugar too.

A skinny latte is very high on sugar. Skimmed milk has much more sugar than full fat milk.

Try MFP and you'll see.

Anyway you seem happy with your choices/body size so carry on as you are if that's what makes you happy. Ignore the bunch of ransoms on the internet!

Sweets101 · 14/03/2017 21:22

I eat of the DC's plates, sometimes i can't be bothered reaching into the stack for my own one. And my usual plates are from the 50's so only marginally bigger anyway.
I think it seems fine tbh, if you are someone who likes to have small portions and snacks throughout the day and have a healthy weight then continue as you are.
But, if you are eating a healthy diet and still losing weight you should go and see your Dr.

iMatter · 14/03/2017 21:22

Dog. Randoms not ransoms 🙄

missbishi · 14/03/2017 21:23

User, let me get this right, you are concerned that you are not eating enough? After someone commented on your portion size?

You are a tall, slim woman. Therefore, at some point in your life, someone will comment that you are not eating enough. Because you are slim. There is plenty of fruit and veg too. Therefore, someone else will comment that it is not enough food. Because it is fruit and veg.

FWIW, so what if you use the kids plates? Why make more work for yourself? Plus, if you don't have to do a separate hand wash, you are saving water, the energy used to heat the water and not using more detergent - all good for the environment Smile

SaucyJack · 14/03/2017 21:29

Who are these people that are commenting?

Why do they even know what you're eating, or what you're eating off of?

I'm sure there must be something more productive they and we could all be doing with our time than looking at pile of meatballs sat on a plastic IKEA plate Smile

allowlsthinkalot · 14/03/2017 21:31

Everyone saying it's a lot of food...400 calories on each plate, max. Probably less if the plates are toddler size. But at a maximum 1200 calories plus the snacks. It's probably not getting you 2000 calories a day. If you're active, you will lose weight.

bunnylove99 · 14/03/2017 21:34

Are they meatballs? I thought they were kidneys. I feel a little less queasy now.Grin

WayfaringStranger · 14/03/2017 21:39

I'm still not getting why you're eating from children's plates.

user1489509816 · 14/03/2017 21:42

They can go in a dishwasher. Much easier. It's not something I've thought about.

We sit down to eat but it's just me and a three year old so it's not like we have a proper sit down meal. He sits for about two minutes.
