I am Irish and DW is English. Our son is 2 days old. She said we can go for a name that's Irish but works well in English too. The one we liked most was Dillon, she then goes "great, but I want it as Dylan"??? That then completely takes away the fact of it being Irish. Confused she isn't getting it. This baby will never be named!!

www.cityam.com/222470/these-are-uks-most-popular-ceo-names - David, Michael, Simon so applying my suggested rules - David - old testatment so won't date. Michael is in both old and new testament. Simon is biblical too. You cannot go wrong with these names and you're bound to please Irish relatives too never mind the priest.

splendide · 13/03/2017 15:28

Sorry ET I thought I knew who you were IRL but I guess not.

RB68 · 13/03/2017 15:37

There is also of course Patrick Joseph - or Paddy Joe as one of the Uncles in our family is known

StripeyDress · 13/03/2017 15:37

You're both overthinking it.

EnormousTiger · 13/03/2017 15:37

If you look towards the bottom of the first page on my website you will see my first initial. My siblings have names of UK monarchs too. Unfortunately my parents always called me by my second name and it was only when I went abroad aged 10 and got a passport I even was told the order of my two Christian names! i was absolutely annoyed by it. I had to go through all my books and I crossed out the two names and put them into the correct order. it causes no end of problems with cheques and the bank and all the rest. In fact I always use my first initial for official things and rather like it as telecoms companies casually use my real first name when I'd rather they used my surname as I like formality to at least they don't call me by the name by which I'm known. It feels like a kindo f victory against the informality of companies who seem to think it's fine to use a first name before you've even been introduced!

Finnegan is an excellent Irish name and can be shortened to Finn. (but then I may be a tad biased Wink)

MPerspective · 13/03/2017 15:49

What about Namukwaya?

picklemepopcorn · 13/03/2017 15:49

I have no problem with you having a wry smile about the Dillon/Dylan thing.

I know you say you're both very happy and it was just a joke, but I do have an issue with calling her silly and wondering if she gets the last word on everything because she pushed the baby out.

She carried him, sacrificed her physical health, risked her life, will be experiencing the consequences for months and possibly forever, and is now experiencing hormonal shifts and surges like you would not believe.

Please try and be a bit more sensitive with your humour around her.

Congratulations on your little boy, I'm sure you'll find a great name!

forumuser · 13/03/2017 15:54

I'm Irish and have never come across Dillon as a first name - it's a surname imo regardless of the spelling.

TheOnlyLivingDeadBoyInNewYork · 13/03/2017 15:57

Finnegan is an excellent Irish name and can be shortened to Finn. (but then I may be a tad biased wink)

Also a surname.

heateallthebuns · 13/03/2017 16:06

In my ds junior infants class in Dublin there are two will's and a billy if that helps!!!

ItShouldHaveBeenJingleJess · 13/03/2017 16:13

(pouts at living boy and gives Mean Girl glare) So are James, Steven, Robert, Charles ad infinitum. (flounces)

TheOnlyLivingDeadBoyInNewYork · 13/03/2017 16:13

Not really.

ItShouldHaveBeenJingleJess · 13/03/2017 16:20

Well, tomaaato, tomato and all that living. And talking of names, is there a reason you appear to have changed yours halfway through the thread - or are there, very coincidentally, two posters with very similar usernames? Apologies if I'm wrong.

maisiejones · 13/03/2017 17:20

AmericanCreamie. I'd give up if I were you. As a man you are the devil incarnate on here, while women can do no wrong.🙄

ChippieBeanAndHorro · 13/03/2017 17:46

baby is getting a double barrelled surname (which is our married name). So both of ours. Then she got middle name pick and then we are deciding on a first name together that works in both places and that we both like. I thought it sounded quite reasonable.

That sounds very reasonable :) Star

DH refused to give up one of his names or entertain any thought of triple barrelling (although, I do admit that would have been silly, but he didn't even agree to consider it). So I got to choose the first names and he simply had limited veto rights for stuff considered offensive in the UK (like the name Castor. Didn't know you called the diarrhoea creating Oil Castor in the UK....) or negative personal experiences...

I personally didn't understand you were joking so your opening post etc made me go Hmm.. ?!

Anyhow. Good luck. I hope you enjoy fatherhood more than this thread Wink

I really like the name Seamus, btw. And thanks to HP even a German speaker like me knows how to pronounce it, if that's something you're potentially concerned about.Idk. Plus, it sounds nice. :)

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/03/2017 18:10

I think you're wrong maisie and I assume you're a woman.

Enko · 13/03/2017 18:33

Op I get you and I can see the humour in what you are talking about, Smile

I hope you and your wife find a name you both love.

moonchild77 · 13/03/2017 18:35

Liam is a fine name.

Bonadrag1988 · 13/03/2017 19:14

She should leave you. Hth.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 13/03/2017 19:22

I think all baby boys look like they should be called William

ChippieBeanAndHorro · 13/03/2017 19:35

She should leave you.

You're suggesting separation based on a thread? Are you out of your effing mind? Confused [shocked]

Bluebell28 · 13/03/2017 19:51

Dillon is Irish , love it but I can't use it as a first name. How about Dermot , Patrick, Danny?

Honeybee79 · 13/03/2017 19:56

Sean? Seamus?

Dylan is v nice but Welsh!

TedEriksen · 13/03/2017 20:01

You're suggesting separation based on a thread?

Given sometime of the bullshit that's been spouted towards the OP on this thread nothing surprises me any more. What a bunch of sanctimonious arseholes.
