I was surprised to read that 90% of adults eat pizza at least once a week. AIBU

Aren't they healthier than a sandwich?

Idk. I mean, sandwiches have the lower and the upper bread part. And very often butter, mayo or cheese, bacon etc and just some lettuce or something (and in some cases they apparently also have crisps in there).

Whereas pizza (at least in our home) has a thin crust, a looot of veggies and just a little flavour intense cheese...

MaryMorpho · 13/03/2017 10:17

Yes our pizza tends to have a much bigger ration of veg to bread than a typical sandwich.

Maybe it's arisen because pizza is seen as a "junk food" because you can get it at takeaways etc. And "junk food = evil" for some people without bothering to stop and think about what it actually consists of.

MaryMorpho · 13/03/2017 10:17

ratio!

BarbaraofSeville · 13/03/2017 10:18

I'm totally baffled over why pizza is meant to be so terrible

Probably because the Mumsnet idea of pizza is slightly different to the Not Mumsnet idea of pizza.

Mumsnet pizza. Small piece or two of home made or posh brand thin crust pizza with loads of veg and salad.

Not Mumsnet pizza. Large deep pan pepperoni from Dominos or Dirty Barry's kebab, pizza and munchy box emporium.

It's a bit like that fish fingers for a baby thread where people are serving fish fingers with mash and loads of veg instead of chips or smiley faces and baked beans like most people in real life.

Clandestino · 13/03/2017 10:18

I love pizza. What's your problem with pizza? Depends on the quality.

ChippieBeanAndHorro · 13/03/2017 10:21

Yes our pizza tends to have a much bigger ration of veg to bread than a typical sandwich.

Exactly. Our pizza also contains more veg than a pretty "normal" sandwich.... (although I do like my sandwiches with grated carrots and pesto. But there's still more veggies on DH's pizza)

I mean... If somebody was like: "Yes, we have pasta with meat and a side salad once a week."

I don't think anybody would be particularly outraged about that, righ?

RedBugMug · 13/03/2017 10:21

dough for pizza base:
500g flour
250ml water
50ml olive oil
pinch of salt
sachet of yeast
(I like to add oregano to the dough as well)

Vermillioncomfyshoes · 13/03/2017 10:54

I am also very surprised that so many adults eat pizza so often.
It must be 10 years since I ate pizza. I also don't know anybody who eats pizza anywhere near as often as this figure.
I have nothing against pizza and realise it can be healthy, I would just never think to choose it as a meal. It holds no appeal for me.
Perhaps it's as I've got older. I've never eaten it more than a couple of times a year anyway. I wonder if there is an age aspect to this. I used to give it to my dc occasionally, but they don't eat it now.
On the plus side, it does leave more for everybody else.

AYankinSpanx · 13/03/2017 10:59

I'd like to try home-made, is it difficult to make the dough? Can I mix it in the kenwood with the dough hook?

Dead easy, I make mine in the food processor - it only takes two minutes (and then rising/knocking back - all just left in food processor).

I eyeball it, but I guess it's around 300g strong bread flour, pinch salt, a level tsp yeast and warm water to combine. I've ditched the olive oil as I get a better texture without it and just add it to the passata instead.

I've tried all ways to cook it, but getting a pizza stone improved our pizzas 100%. They're only about £10 and if you use it every week, it's worth it Grin

BarbaraofSeville · 13/03/2017 11:00

I don't think there's a risk of a pizza shortage vermillion. It's quite obvious if you look around how popular pizza is.

Domino's, Pizza Hut and Pizza Express are everywhere.
All supermarkets have a large fresh and frozen pizza sections, and many have 'fresh' pizza counters.
Many independent pizza sellers of varying price and qualities in most areas.

I'm just as baffled about the popularity of Greggs and Subway and fizzy pop. I've been to Subway once and never again it was so revolting, I go to Greggs about once a year and have fizzy pop about the same frequency. If everyone did the same, neither of these businesses, or Coca Cola, Pepsi etc would exist. But they're everywhere and seemingly doing very well.

BillSykesDog · 13/03/2017 11:00

YANBU because you're a MN poster and 90% of posters on here claim they eat nothing but quinoa, kale, steamed mung beans and chia seeds. But 90% of them are lying and are at home stuffing themselves with a large cheese crust meat feast 🍕

MyBonnieLiesOverTheOcean · 13/03/2017 11:01

Friday night is pizza night in our house. Yup, every Friday night!

Shop bought posh thin crispy base with lots of lovely salads. Don't see the problem with it - tasty, quick and pretty healthy really.

BewtySkoolDropowt · 13/03/2017 11:34

I quite like an occasional pizza. My kids would eat it every day, but once or twice a month is enough for me. Nearer the once if possible. Not a fan of supermarket pizzas (fresh or frozen), prefer homemade.

Riderontheswarm · 13/03/2017 11:38

Haven't read the thread but I would be surprised if 9 in 10 people even liked pizza.

I like it but I know people who don't.

AdoraBell · 13/03/2017 11:40

We eat pizza about twice each month. DD would live on Domino's deliveries if she could. I have an Italian friend and when I stayed over we had left over pizza for breakfast. This was a hm pizza and her mum is an amazing cook.

splendide · 13/03/2017 11:43

I am amazed that 90% of people have the same food every week. I like pizza but there is a huge world of food out there and I can't imagine limiting myself by repeating meals so often.

ChippieBeanAndHorro · 13/03/2017 11:45

I am amazed that 90% of people have the same food every week.

What about breakfast? There are about 3 breakfast food items I have on a regular basis....

splendide · 13/03/2017 11:49

Oh fair point chippie! I meant for dinner - I am really boring with breakfast. I have porridge nearly every day.

Applebite · 13/03/2017 11:53

Just remembered that when I had the dreaded GD, DP wiped my tears away one evening with an amazing cauliflower crust pizza (recipe for base is on bbc good food). It was different every time he made it, with blue cheese, chilli, walnuts and a metric fucktonne of roasted veggies being my favourite. It was really really really good, despite not sounding it!

A good alternative if anyone wants pizza without so many carbs.

Deathraystare · 13/03/2017 11:54

I tease my French flat mate who eats a WHOLE pizza about 5 days a week. A whole new Pepperoni one every day for 5 days. He is skinny on the outside but I told him he is probably like foie gras on the inside!!

ChippieBeanAndHorro · 13/03/2017 11:54

splendide
I'm really boring with breakfast and lunch (during weekdays lunch is usually soup or salad based. Unless I have a lunch with a colleague or a client).

But I also like some variety in the evening. :)

Camomila · 13/03/2017 11:55

I'm surprised, I'm Italian and I don't have pizza every week!

I don't like most of the supermarket ones though and I'm rubbish at making dough.

My dads homemade pizza is my favourite.

MackerelOfFact · 13/03/2017 11:58

That seems high to me. I probably have pizza about once every 2 months, and I frigging LOVE pizza. I probably eat sandwiches and pasta about the same amount too TBH. DP doesn't get on with wheat which is probably the main reason, so I only have it when I'm out. (Plus I like to pretend I follow a low-carb diet to justify eating craptonnes of cheese).

It's quick, easy, cheap and endlessly customisable so I do understand why it's so popular.

I don't think there's anything I have on a weekly basis. Probably fish and veg - but the types of fish and veg change!

NormaSmuff · 13/03/2017 12:01

We used to eat pizzas on saturdays.
i dont know why we stopped.

steppemum · 13/03/2017 12:03

we have pizza once a week. Saturday night is family night, pizza and bad TV usually.
Not homw made served with salad, nope, just frozen supermarket ones.
we drink coke and lemonade as well.

The rest of the time we eat made from scratch healthy stuff. Can't afford takeaways or eatign out, so it is real food only. Then saturday nights are pizza.

can't get excited by it really. i bet some of the surprised people eat a lot of pre prepared stuff/jars and sauces over a week. It is the same.
