I was surprised to read that 90% of adults eat pizza at least once a week. AIBU

I've recently decided that our Saturday tea/dinner is pizza, (my day off from cooking). Can't see why people pay in excess of £6 for a takeaway pizza when you ca boy one in the supermarket for as little as £2 and cook it in minutes at home.

What are you having for Saturday tea/dinner?

limitedperiodonly · 15/03/2017 00:07

Not once a week but it can be healthy if you have thin crust and put lots of veg.

Mind how you go

BusterGonad · 15/03/2017 06:00

Dancegirl i never really bothered to have take away pizza before I left England but where I currently live I just get so depressed with the food situation that it's now my go to takeaway wise. And who can't resist a bogof? It's £10 for two large ones! Wink*
Hallgreenmiss* what are you talking about? You cannot compare a supermarket pizza to a decent takeaway one! If they taste the same to you then I'm worried about your oral health! 😂

DeliveredByKiki · 15/03/2017 06:05

We make our own every Friday night too except DD who has fish fingers and chips

n0ne · 15/03/2017 06:12

We have it probably once a fortnight as a takeaway but the Pizza Express/Zizzi sort, not Pizza Hut/Dominos grease-fest. Don't like American-style pizza at all. I sometimes pick up a fresh base from the supermarket and whack toppings on that, maybe once a month? YANBU - I'm amazed people eat it that often!

skerrywind · 15/03/2017 06:19

People must be eating my share then.

Five of us in our family, I can't even remember the last time we ate pizza. No one is a fan.

BarbaraofSeville · 15/03/2017 08:26

It's not veggie, vegan, kosher, allergy friendly

Eh? Of course it can be all these things. One of the nicest pizzas I've ever had was a Gozitan, when on Gozo, which due to it's proximity to Scicily, is heavily influenced food wise by Italy.

It was topped with potatoes, peppers, onions, capers olives and herbs. When I ordered it I didn't notice the lack of cheese and expected the potatoes to be thinly sliced new potatoes, not sure why.

But when it came, the potatoes were fried cubes of potato and I remember saying to DP 'I appear to have a salad and chips on my pizza' and it was absolutely delicious and of course, totally vegan.

Many pizza places have gluten free bases available. You can even make them low carb by making a cauliflower cheese base, which is very nice indeed.

BertrandRussell · 15/03/2017 08:45

I've made veggie, vegan and allergy friendly pizzas (obviously not all allergies, just the ones people eating it had). I've never made kosher, but I could, if asked.

If anyone in London has been to my old Dutch the pancake house, they do enormous pancakes that are just like pizzas in terms of toppings, but with a pancake base so a bit lighter/less filling.

Don't get me started on the pudding ones though....

apple, i went there about 18 years ago and although i promised myself i would return, i never did! It was really good and better than pizza as it wasnt as filling - i did have a savoury one though, not the sweet fillings, from what i can remember. I am glad its going strong and seemed very popular. not many places around like that.

GinUrgentlyRequired · 15/03/2017 10:41

Every Saturday night, here. Pizza Express pizzas and garlic dough balls in front of the TV. We eat properly (at the table) every other evening so the kids see it as a treat. I also provide salad with the pizza but it's mostly ignored by my 2 teenagers. If they're out on Saturday, they insist on it for Sunday dinner - my mother is horrified! Grin

Pizza is an underrated food.

It was invented by the Italian immigrants who first went to New York, if I am not mistaken.

It is basically an open sandwich spreading around the ingredients as well as possible.

Make the base with some flour and a little water and if you can afford Parmesan cheese add some too with plenty of salt to give the base a good kick.

Put it in the oven and when it is half done take it out, keep the oven on, blitz some tomato, garlic and chilli pepper or cayenne, something that you have at hand, then add other ingredients that would otherwise go to waste.

Then top with cheese. Although traditionally pizza didn't go with extra cheese. That just happened when people got wealthier.

Olives and a sprinkle of chopped garlic as garnish.

And of course children love pizzas because they can break the rules.

Because you just eat them with your hands unless you have been reading too many books on etiquette.

What makes me laugh is so many people are making a fortune selling them for between £10-£20 when it can all be done far more efficiently with your own hands in your own kitchen.

Does anyone ever think back to what they ate as a child? We ate homemade pizza, lasagne, soup, roasts, fried chips, beans and something.

Lots of different things. Lots of mums I know keep kids to clean eating.

I don't have any idea how what is right or wrong!

Fucktifyno · 15/03/2017 23:03

@IAmNotAUserNumber DH says the same about out local pizzeria too, I'' inclined to agree! I only like italian pizza, american pizza is grim.

Fucktifyno · 15/03/2017 23:04

Oh and is anyone else now sick of the word pizza?

MaryMorpho · 16/03/2017 00:17

I'm always shocked at takeaway pizza prices! It's unbelievable if you've ever made a pizza. I don't make them from scratch generally (no time), I just get large margheritas (pizza express or waitrose own brand) when they're on special offer, freeze them and add toppings at home. That way a pizza for two to share is around £3-4. Cannot understand why people pay £12.99 or something for takeaway, it's not even as nice.

MrsSchadenfreude · 16/03/2017 00:33

Kosher pizza is perfectly possible. I used to live near a great kosher pizzeria in Tel Aviv. AKA a vegetarian pizza. Hmm

shovetheholly · 16/03/2017 09:04

AH, but do your gourmet homemade pizzas come delivered to you readycooked, in a cardboard box with holes in it that doubles as a plate, thus saving you any work whatsoever?

Because not having to raise a finger is the entire point of dirty, lazy takeaway pizza.

MaryMorpho · 16/03/2017 11:56

I do get that, but if I get a chinese or curry, it also gets delivered ready-cooked etc but for a lot less money per item.

OliviaStabler · 16/03/2017 12:06

I am surprised but maybe I am not friends or relations with lots of pizza eaters Smile

BarbaraofSeville · 16/03/2017 13:18

Modern day definition of having more money than sense - paying full price for Domino's or Pizza Hut pizza (or Pizza Express for that matter).

There is always a voucher or a deal and it's not like it's good pizza so nearly everyone will have an independent that delivers pizza for less than the 'special offer' price of Domino's etc.

Posh supermarket ones or some frozen ones are nicer, and around half the price so I just generally keep something in the freezer for the 'CBA, need pizza' moments. I don't count putting a frozen pizza in the oven as any sort of 'work'.

Home made pizza is nice, but takes planning and time - I use a breadmaker and also let it rise for a bit once shaped before putting toppings on.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 16/03/2017 18:58

This thread just made me order pizza....
