Sorry - that post should have been to Claws. I blame ME. Grin

cozietoesie · 10/03/2017 01:22

Sure they looked happy, Claws. They were having their photo taken and the photographer said 'Cheese'. Grin

TheClaws · 10/03/2017 01:34

What the photographer should say is, "Smile! Trump in a bathrobe!"

Oh wait..

AcrossthePond55 · 10/03/2017 02:17

Pass the eye bleach, please Claws. And the anti-nausea pills.

GingerIvy · 10/03/2017 06:51

From George Takei on Twitter

The GOP wants to ensure the mentally ill have access to guns, but not mandated healthcare. This tells you all you need to know.

MsHooliesCardigan · 10/03/2017 08:44

The thing about accessing contraception and how expensive it is has really shocked me. Being able to control your fertility is a fundamental part of women's rights. I read a book at university consisting of letters to Marie Stopes. After each letter, it stated how many pregnancies that woman had had, including stillbirths and miscarriages. The average was about 16.
Some fervent pro life types don't seem to care much what happens to foetuses once they are outside the womb - don't support a decent health care system, relaxing rules on guns so more people can get murdered etc. Some, like W, even enthusiastically support the death penalty Confused That really takes cognitive dissonance to a new level.

CaveMum · 10/03/2017 09:03

Has there been any official WH comment on the military nude photo scandal that is emerging in the US?

saffronwblue · 10/03/2017 09:14

Dread to think what 45 would tweet about it.

BiglyBadgers · 10/03/2017 10:28

Based on his previous comments on women I imagine he would want to join in the fun saffron.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 10/03/2017 10:52

Do you think that pro lifers/anti choicers say the same things about pro-choice people though?

That it's strange that we (on the whole although obviously aren't a monolith) are largely against the death penalty but are pro choice? I could see some people framing it as "they don't want convicted murderers to be killed but are happy for innocent babies to be killed". It's not a view I subscribe to but might be how some people see it.

BiglyBadgers · 10/03/2017 11:09

Oh I am sure they do pain. The difference is that I am not a hypocrite because I do not consider a fetus as an independent lifeform. Therefore I can say every person has a right to life, but a fetus is not a person until it is able to survive independently outside of the womb. They, however, are made hypocrites by their own arguements as they argue the fetus should not be aborted as it has as much right to life as the mother, while at the same time arguing for state sanctioned murder of people who commit a crime and allowing people to die from lack of adequate healthcare. In fact their view appears to be that a small clump of cells has more right to life than the mother who can die of complications during birth because she can't afford her maternity bills.

cozietoesie · 10/03/2017 12:22

Well done, Bernie. Smile (Just finished reading one of the related articles about his work. In the Guardian so feel free to link them if you wish. My device is already anticipating the weekend and won't do it. Grin)

Deejoda · 10/03/2017 13:19

Across
I've been absent today because I'm planning a Disneyland long weekend. My son and I are going to escape the madness

I am very jealous! Disneyland sounds amazing right now.

Bigly the glaring hypocrisy with pro-life anti-abortion yet cut PP and access to healthcare is mind-boggling. At my most cynical, I think they think all normal people are expendable and these rich out-of-touch-with-reality buffoons would see it as a plus if the majority of people died from disease and poverty, to cull their numbers.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 10/03/2017 13:30

bigly yes I see the distinction. I suppose the disconnect starts from holding fundamentally different opinions about "the sanctity of life" etc, which leads to such opposing views and possibly a load of misogyny about denying women control of their own bodies and punishing them for having sex

We have talked about rabid internet commenters quite a bit here in relation to trump supporters, so thought you might find this article interesting. It is around a documentary and includes some summaries of the views of people who leave extreme comments on message boards or posts on twitter. This paragraph blew my mind a bit though:

Jackson’s primary concern is immigration: he believes Britain will “fall apart” under the weight of refugees. “I really don’t care where they are from, or which war they are fleeing.” What makes it worse, he says, and the reason he is particularly angry at the government, is that it cost him so much to bring over his Thai wife. “I had to pay thousands to get my wife here from Thailand. Her visa only lasts for six months, and then she has to go back. And then we have to do the same thing all over again.”

thedcbrokemybank · 10/03/2017 14:56

I think I love Berne Sanders for that article. He articulates it all so well.

AcrossthePond55 · 10/03/2017 15:07

Bigly that man's attitude is pretty typical of the Trump supporters I know. They complain about something but when you point out to them that they benefit from either that very thing, or something very similar, they shout "It's not the same, at ALL!" or "But I worked for it so I deserve it!!" and then start to shout you down for being a 'bleeding heart' or 'un-American'. It's why I've stopped trying to 'convert the devil'. I'll talk and debate with people who are undecided or who believe but have doubts. But you'd as lief stick your finger in the ocean and turn the tide as change the mind of a member of the alt-right. Because then they'd have to take responsibility for the welfare of 'others'. And they'd have to accept that they are 'where they are' in life because of themselves, not because of some 'non-white' subversive conspiracy.

So now it's all about 'connecting' with others in our community who feel like we do. It's about organizing and reaching out to the undecided and the GOP and Conservative 'disaffected' and convincing them that changing their vote is the way to go.

BTW, excellent Bernie article, and I quote:

“My job is to substantially increase the number of people participating in the political process. We’ve been quite successful in this, getting more and more people to run for office. That’s what I’m focusing on.”

"...But also understand that in moments of crisis, what has happened, time and time again, is that people have stood up and fought back. So despair is absolutely not an option.”

He's given us a roadmap. We just need to follow it.

cozietoesie · 10/03/2017 15:13

Indeed, Across. (And have a good long weekend. Smile)

BiglyBadgers · 10/03/2017 17:10

A link to Trumps weekly address if you are feeling strong enough to watch it. I am finding his scripted speeches increasingly irrelevant to be honest and find it hard to find the energy to listen to him anymore. I think GOP has more than enough rope to get rid if they wanted to. The battle now is making them feel that keeping him in power is more damaging then getting rid. We all know he is dangerous and talks insanity, why bother listening? Or am i getting worn down? Confused
