£60 a month for water is ridiculous, right??

Posting here for traffic... Sorry for the dull subject matter!

Just received new water bill for the year, almost £60pm direct debit. Up from £43pm.
It's a rateable value bill, now thinking of switching to metered bill. Anyone have any experience of this working out cheaper? Only DS and me in smallish 3 bed semi.

I cannot fathom how the bill can possibly be £60pm! Will get on the phone tomorrow but wondered if anyone would care to share their experiences of water meters?

That does seem ridiculous. Our bill doubled on a meter so I can't really comment, but in your case you may find it cheaper.

Its supposed to be based on (a very dated) value of your house afaik.
Don't know why its gone up so much Blush I can't really afford itSad

We're in a terraced house a day got our £400 bill for the 1/4 so yours is less than ours.
In our area they're installing compulsory meters in all houses supposedly to save water due to the areas dense population. This is probably true but after the installation bills I think will stay the same or even increase for us.

I've always found it much cheaper on a meter. My last bill was £80 for 6 months and I'm also in a 3 bedroomed house! I believe that the rough rule of thumb is that it should generally be more beneficial for you to be on a meter if there are more bedrooms than people in your household. It also makes sense to me that you pay for your actual usage rather than what sone one thinks you will use. The first thing I did when I moved into my house was to get a meter put in. I think on the rates we were supposed to pay well over £300 a year and we actually pay half of that on a meter.

I know some people have had their bills go up when metered but I can't see how I could possibly actually run up a metered bill of £60pm!

I'm on a smart meter and I pay £22 per month for 2 adults one child in a 2 bed. £60 sounds a heck of a lot. Maybe you have a leak somewhere?

3 bed house here, 2 kids and 2 adults. Dishwasher on twice a day, washing machine twice a day, 1 deep swimming pool bath and two showers etc metered £18 per month.

If you have a leak anywhere on your side of the meter it will register on your bill even if it's not visible. The same goes for dripping taps and running overflows.

On the other side. If you're on metered water and find you're paying less it will also reflect in your sewerage bill.

We were charged £70 a month when we moved to our current house (very old building). We said it was too high, they checked for leaks, didn't find any and said if they installed a meter our bill would be halved. We had the meter installed and the bill went up! We got a dishwasher, a better washing machine and a new boiler and the bills are a bit lower even with an extra child (who threw up a very lot for 2.5 years ). There's 4 of us. We're paying just over £60.

That doesn't sound right. We pay £24 a month, family of 4, 4 bedroom house. I have a myself and OH shower every day, children bath every other day. Washing machine and dishwasher always on. We have a new build though so maybe the toilets water system are more eco friendly.

5 people in our house. £500 for the year on our meter. Including multiple swimming pool fill ups. They wanted £400 a year when it was just me and my daughter. Got the meter and it went down to £130 a year. Definitely worth it

I got someone out to look at putting in a meter. They said I could try it for a while, see if it reduced the bills and go back to non metered at any point. Why don't you do that?
