To promote her new film. Can't these A listers just wear a classy outfit?

This attempt at feminist 'thinking' and trying to be right on is a bit boring now.

And as for 'a role model to young girls' ... I very much doubt it. Even with her clothes fully on

NoraDora · 28/02/2017 20:42

I'd be more concerned about the photoshop.

ShastaBeast · 28/02/2017 20:43

This is why so many women reject or can't identify with feminism. Stop criticising other women for their choices, even if they are the result of brainwashing by the patriarchy, we could never know what she'd have chosen to do if there was never a patriarchy anyway. Better to embrace all women and work with each other to achieve equality.

babyunicornvomit · 28/02/2017 20:43

Personally one of the things I feel strongly about is the breasts are a part of a woman's body. They are beautiful and shouldn't be sexualised - If a woman wants to show any part of her breasts, why is there anything wrong with that?
If she was showing them in a sexual way (e.g. pushed together, sexual poses) I'd feel differently as she is a huge role model for young women, but I feel she looks very powerful and strong in this photo, and like shes saying 'fuck you' to anyone that judges her

DioneTheDiabolist · 28/02/2017 20:44

What should she wear OP?

Dreadfulidea · 28/02/2017 20:44

Nothing to do with sex and everything to do with art.
Women have breasts. Getting them out for breast feeding, sunbathing, arty shots because they look nice means bugger all

Oiled up, artificially enlarged, no sagging, wrinkles etc for the purposes of sexual gratification is something different.

think feminism has taken a step backwards thinking of the days when I barely wore a top all summer

NotStoppedAllDay · 28/02/2017 20:44

So if feminists can't show part of their boobs to be a feminist then it makes it hard for the poor buggers to breastfeed

A bit 1950's isn't it? A step backwards...

Singing, you're beating your head against the wall here. There are some people who simply cannot understand that a woman might pose nude, semi nude or implied nude, for any reason other than to titillate men. It can't be art, it can't be fashion, it can't be an aesthetic, it can't be the common non-sexual female admiration of other females (you know, like little girls do with their Barbies and makeup heads). It can't be just a woman enjoying her body in and of itself, like when we get dolled up for a night out. And it certainly can't be a woman with a disability like you, who finally gets a bit of autonomy in her self presentation!

No, it's based around a woman's body and therefore, no matter how tasteful and subtle it is, there can be no possible reason except to please men.

And they don't see how anti-feminist THAT is.

FritzDonovan · 28/02/2017 20:45

Agree it's rather hypocritical. And also not about looking beautiful, the amount of boob on display is all about looking sexy. Presumably aimed at men. I don't think for a moment that any woman shows off everything bar a nipple just to show other women she's beautiful! If she does that's a rather egotistical attitude. If she's a spokesperson for various women's issues I'm not sure this was a good choice- is it a good thing to imply to young girls that it's empowering to show off your body? But as pp said, sex sells. I guess the set director/designer (whatever they're called) thought this was appropriate to link to a wholesome kids movie (encourages dad's to go, anyway).
Where have my pearls gone...?...

lazytuesday · 28/02/2017 20:45

thecolonelbumming yes i think we should compile a uniform list just so no one demeans themselves by mistake.
I remember once at college being called a slut because you could see the colour of my bra thru my shirt. One of these lists would have protected me from that.

unless perhaps we challenge the attitude that womens bodies are erotic symbols and have to be controlled and represented in a certain way.
Thats too hard tho so im down with The Decency Uniform List.

X posted dread Grin

ApplePieLikes · 28/02/2017 20:46

This is wearing uncomfortable clothes that have no purpose but catering to the male gaze.

Then what's it doing in Vanity Fair?

BurnTheBlackSuit · 28/02/2017 20:46

And also, we don't actually know the extent of Emma Watson's choices in doing this photo shoot.

8misskitty8 · 28/02/2017 20:46

She isn't topless.

Whoever did the make up should be sacked. She looks awful and dare I say a bit 'mannish' '

NotStoppedAllDay · 28/02/2017 20:47

Hey yorick it's not just men....women can also appreciate bare breasts, don't be sexist!!Grin

user1487175389 · 28/02/2017 20:47

It's not nudity or partial nudity that causes sexism or misogyny.

Keeping your clothes on doesn't do anything to dismantle the patriarchy or stop men objectifying you.

As with the old argument about sexual assault - whatever an individual wears, they are not responsible for the actions of people who wish to demean them, or wish to assault them. They are not responsible for an industry that seeks to exploit women. Only the people doing the demeaning, assaulting, objectifying and exploiting are responsible.

FritzDonovan · 28/02/2017 20:47

Aargh *dads

Astoria7974 · 28/02/2017 20:48

At the end of the day she's a Hollywood feminist - so will only make provocative public statements when there's a film to promote

NotStoppedAllDay · 28/02/2017 20:48

Men,dads and young girls are now the target audience for vanity fair are they?Hmm

Trooperslane · 28/02/2017 20:48

nuup.

she's a great role model.

and I can't call that topless when it isn't really.

Stormwhale · 28/02/2017 20:48

yes, it's aimed at men so they think "sexy Emma Watson, can almost see her boobs". Titilation. And might be more inclined to go and see B&TB as a result.

Really? I wouldn't have thought there would be much underboob in b&tb. I doubt many grown men would go to see a children's film in the hope of a quick perv at her. How silly.

Flypaperforarseholes · 28/02/2017 20:49

I think she's a fantastic role model to young girls and a photo shoot in which part of her breast is visible does not change the fact that she is a strong, educated woman who uses her profile in a positive way. Part of being a feminist and a role model for women is to be in charge of your own body.

atheistmantis · 28/02/2017 20:49

Completely her choice. I posed topless a few years ago and found it a very empowering experience, as it was my body and nobody was telling me what I could and couldn't do with it.
