So my first baby is due in a few weeks. I am about to book in for a pre birth hollywood wax Shock but i also planned on having a pedicure and manicure just to feel nice. Everyone is saying ooh no i wouldn't in case you need an emergency c-section! They'll literally stand over you and make you take all the nail polish off before theatre?! Is that true?! I planned on having shellac on fingers and toes which i couldn't get off even if they stood over me so what should i do? I am not hugely vain etc i just wanted to feel nice before going through child birth. AIBU?

A pre birth wax.

I don't even know what to say.

HotNatured · 01/03/2017 15:28

MargaretCavendish I thought the same, what a bitchy comment. Some posters just can't help themselves Hmm

And

Jaagojaago
Don't say anything then. Sorted.

elliehopemum · 01/03/2017 17:42

I had all my nail varnish removed (emergency section) all my piercings taken out and I have a false tooth which was also taken out ! Pretty I was not but I didn't care !

kazmina10 · 01/03/2017 17:44

None of this is a priority IMO!

Wow! Learn something new every day! Shock

pollymere · 01/03/2017 17:56

I suspect the wax will hurt like heck. I don't see mani/pedi being an issue, personally. I had a c-section and they had to shave the area but I don't remember them caring about polish. If you need to remove it, it will come off with an acetone based polish remover.

Marymoosmum14 · 01/03/2017 17:58

You can have a Mani/pedi without having nail varnish on it will still make you feel good.

Susieangel · 01/03/2017 18:04

Go ahead. Very rare to need GA for CS. Lots of places to attach monitors and most mums awake so quite frankly you can tell if someone not well.
What I dont understand is bald fannys. Was a midwife. Best I saw was shaved into a heart and dyed red. Her lovely husband helped her.

Cinnamon2013 · 01/03/2017 18:09

I'm going to be the big fat meanie that says

Yes, YABU worrying about nail varnish in this particular situation.

LilacSpatula · 01/03/2017 18:12

Nope. Had an EMCS 12 weeks ago and nails were left intact.

BoringUsername17 · 01/03/2017 18:12

40 years ago it was routine for women to be shaved by the hospital staff before giving birth. Funny how it's gone 180 degrees since then.

DimplesToadfoot · 01/03/2017 18:16

Why not get a mani with a peel off base coat? peel it off the one nail if needed, or all if asked to

mathanxiety · 01/03/2017 18:20

Don't do any of it. Regrowth will be horrible on top of healing scars and stretched out and very swollen vulva area, plus humongous pads to soak up lochia.

Forget the mani and pedi too. They will take it all off unless they are unprofessionally unconcerned about you and your baby. It most definitely is not an urban myth that nails must be bare Hmm.

When you deliver vaginally you are going to poop out everything in your intestines, maybe a few times. You may well throw up too. You will find yourself mooing like a cow.

Please don't bother gussying yourself up for this occasion. It is so not about how you look.

InvisibleKittenAttack · 01/03/2017 18:24

Well, I wish I'd had a wax when I had a csection with DC2, they shaved the top of my pubic hair before hte section, shaved stubble is itchy when it grows back, but round the cut was sore and I couldn't stratch. Wax would have been much more gentle on the regrowth.

I'd risk the mani/pedi. It's unlikely they'll have to take off a nail varnish.

mathanxiety · 01/03/2017 18:24

BoringUsername, they used to shave because they thought the hair was unhygienic. They stopped because they realised how high the chances of infection are when hair is shaved or waxed.

OP, please be aware that your skin is vulnerable to strep and staph infections that may be present in the salon or elsewhere due to tiny abrasions and cuts from the waxing that you may not notice at the time.

My DSIS got a horrible staph infection once after a wax job, luckily not while pregnant. She was told it is not at all unusual.

I can't believe anyone would take this risk while pregnant.

Chocolateteabag · 01/03/2017 18:25

I had to have an emergency op and spent a week in ICU with gel nails and toenails - the SATs monitors worked through them. Nurses said that the acetone needed to get them off would be a fire risk - but they'd have done it if absolutely needed.

Vermillioncomfyshoes · 01/03/2017 18:30

Ugh. The amount of people on here ignoring the safety measures hospitals impose to keep you and your baby safe and alive is shocking

That's my immediate reaction as well.
I've had a CS under GA, plus four other surgeries under GA.
They gave me nail varnish remover on admission the first time.
Of course I didn't wear varnish on future occasions as the instructions were clear and specific about not wearing any - even clear varnish.

My nails have always been examined and ticked off a check list before going to theatre. Why make the procedure any more risky than it already is? As for a Hollywood wax, whatever that might be, I'd probably need another GA for that.

Bobbi73 · 01/03/2017 18:46

Blimey, I had an emergency cs and a planned one. No-one ever mentioned anything about nail Polish. Maybe go for regular Polish just in case. I've never been waxed as I'm a scaredy cat but I did immac my bikini line before the elective as I was shaved for the emergency and the itchiness from the shaving rash was just one more thing to deal with Good luck x

user1488038434 · 01/03/2017 18:46

I had an emergency c section 11 months ago and was on a sats monitor for most of the labour and was not asked to remove any nail polish. Wasn't even mentioned. This was at St thomas' so perhaps it's hospital dependent? You could always call ahead and ask what their policy is. I had a pre birth wax was and a general all round groom. Amidst the pain and anguish of labour I was still able to note that my anaesthetist looked like a better looking version of Ryan Gosling so it was all worthwhile. Best of luck, wishing you an easy birthing experience.

LubiLooLoo · 01/03/2017 18:49

I didn't consider any of these things! I just took a long bath. I didn't know I was meant to tidy up down there before giving birth!

I don't know why you would put yourself through a wax while pregnant! Sounds crazy to me! Confused

MummyH1206 · 01/03/2017 18:54

Don't know about the nails but they advise not to wax as hairs are there to stop germs getting in so can lead to infections.

GrumbleBumble · 01/03/2017 19:03

missm0use I was able to anticipate my crash emergency section and therefore had a epidural in place because I had had chapter and verse on my friends crash emergency a few months before otherwise I'd probably have ended up under GA like she did. Being prepared for the worst can actually have its uses!
Silkybear I was with bush but then I always am. I figure its there for a reason.

Polska03 · 01/03/2017 19:17

I had an emergency C Section and they cleaned 2 nails of polish before they put me to sleep Confused the nail polish I had put on the night before when i couldnt sleep (due to being in early stages of labour but didnt realise) and wanted my nails to look nice in the 'newborn' pictures but when my DS was here (after a rather traumatic birth) I couldnt have cared less what my nails looked like! Grin

Mustang27 · 01/03/2017 19:19

Arm waxing?!? Really is that a thing? I bet it hurts like hell but back to the op Hollywood? Manicure and Pedicure!!! Trust me you won't give a whoohaa when you are in labour chick, I really had a very good labour and was relatively relaxed. You won't care how your toes look when you are trying not to tear/poop yourself 😂
